What to do with Ground Zero? Hmm let's build a fucking mosque on it!

What idiot thought it would be a great idea to build a mosque near or on Ground Zero!? I'm not opposed to Islam in any way but goddamn you would think any guy with half a brain could figure out it would cause a huge shit storm?

And then you have a catholic archbishop supporting the idea, saying "What is not acceptable is to prejudge any group, or to let fear and bias trump the towering American (and for us Catholics, the religious) virtues of hospitality, welcome, and religious freedom."

Did I just die and wake up in a parallel world? What the hell just happened!?

Speaking of which, why don't they build the mother of all worshipping buildings; a common place that Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Muslims, Jews, and every other major religious group can go to? Say it's a first step toward peace and cultural understanding and I'll bet you no one will have the balls to oppose that.

It's not a done deal yet. The NYC landmarks preservation committee is considering landmarking the building which makes it nearly impossible to make major changes to the building. In addition to the fact that they are a long way from securing funding to actually build it which will cost around $100M.

It may be a little insensitive, I guess, to build it 2 blocks from ground zero but unless someone can prove they have ties to terrorism there is nothing else anyone can do about it. Some lawmakers here are calling for an investigation into the group sponsoring it.

that can be looked at both ways.

1. we arent scared or were "broken down" from 9/11 that made us weaker. it can be looked at as we are a strong country because we have recovered from this or whatever.

2. what actually will happen is a total shitstorm like fecal matter covered in bird feathers spraying the walls in every direction.

im pretty sure i made no sense with the first one but i hope u guys get what im sayin

no. just no. im pretty sure waging war against the groups responsible for this incredible act of terrorism is more than enough for our image. why we are still in the middle east is another story, but we did what we had to and held those responsible accountable for there actions. the fact that these muslims are able to even get this far is mind boggling to me. read your history, this is a classic example of a takeover. these groups enter a country by the thousands, settle into the woodwork, then push their way to the top. look at Denmark. They catered to every whim the muslims had in hopes of avoiding gruesome battles or the fear of appearing uncivilized to the world or intolerant of other peoples culture. bottom line, the muslims run the place now. if this goes through, consider this the beginning of the end, i know i am making broad generalizations here, and may be coming of as harsh, but in order to ensure the safety of the American public things like this should never even be thought of. its the muslims way of adding insult to injury. if this goes through we will appear more broken down than after the attack.

so when did america forget about the whole freedom of religion ideal? so many people are worried about this dumb bullshit but here's my opinion on the matter...


the people that hate us are of muslim faith, correct? well how many of those terrorists have bombed their own mosques? they wouldn't because if they did, they'd get chris hanson having them sit in a chair when they walk into heaven instead of 40 virgins. i say let them build these mosques everywhere along with the churches and temples except these keep us safe while making us look very accepting and nice. no terrorist is going to bomb a high rise that's next to a place of prayer.

To clarify, I'm a Canadian and although I believe 9/11 to be a horrible incident I don't regard islam as "hostile" or "dangerous" in any way. In any religion there are the extremists, and in Islam's case they've just taken it a bit further than others.

That being said, I think it is quite insensitive and foolish for whoever that is building this to even consider this development in this particular location. Like I said before in my original post, it's absolutely ridiculous to assume there will be no strong opposition in a location like this. Why wouldn't they build the mosque in another part of New York where it wouldn't be adding gas to the fire?

I do agree that it's been 8 years already and that to be still fuming about it is both unproductive and unreasonable, but this is the one place in the whole world that could and should be memorialized as would any other location with a history of this magnitude. To be undermining that, in my opinion is a very bad move by the developers and to be fighting it is even worse.

dude there's been major news coverage about mosques being built anywhere in the U.S. this kinda started it off because of how close it was to ground zero. people need an excuse to bitch... with all due respect to the victims of course.

Here are a few things to think about,

Its going to be a community center for people regardless of religioun. Just like the Ymca, they will have a place for worship though .

The group who wants to do this publicly calls out muslim extremist and al quida and want to improve relations with normal non extreme Muslims with the west.

I am completely fine with it, and I feel that a great way to move forward in the world is to (try to) show that we accept the muslum faith and realize that it wasn't the very faith itself, but a few radical terrorists.
This is just my opinion though and inb4 major shitstorm.

wait what? Wanna say that again, I'm not quite sure about what you're implying...

Also I do support their cause, but I just don't think its wise of them to be building it in this specific location. I do agree with Carson though, it is supposed to be a community centre so it's probably just people hyping this up to be a huge issue when it really isn't. Maybe I just failed and fell for mainstream media. fuck.

its actually quite sad to see all of you are aganist a mosque. obviously i would be to if it was on ground zero, but its not. its near. the islamic religion did not cause 9/11, but rather a group of insanely retarded people that just so happened to believe in the islamic religion. they make causes saying god made me do this, when really thats how they saw it, not how it is believed widely

Putting a mosque near ground zero is like putting a nuclear science muesuem in hiroshima, or having german appreciation day in Isreal.

Sure the people wanting to  put it there aren't responsible for the problem itself but flat out its just not a good idea

I have been reading up on this, and i learned that they were given the green light to build the mosque. They plan on demolishing a 152 year old building near ground zero so they can erect a mosque in its place.

Although it would be considered unconstitutional to not allow it to be built because of 9/11 and the terrorists being muslim, but i mean seriously, victims families dont want to go visit the site in which their child/family members were murdered and see a fucking mosque. its just not right.

i dont know what the fuck people are thinking.

This is the only post I'm gonna make about this, and why people are being retarded on the subject of the "Ground-Zero Mosque".

1) They have freedom of religion, just like any other citizen(s)

2) It's not a mosque, its a community center, basically the Muslim version of a YMCA. It has a small chapel type thing in it, but thats about it for religious stuff.

3) IT'S NOT AT GROUND ZERO. I was there, standing in front of the actual building last Wednesday, Its about 2 blocks away, and one half a block over. It's in a building thats not being used right now, and hasn't been used in quite some time.

You can thank the media for exaggerating the facts, and occasionally blatantly lying to get a good story.

okay, anyone who bothered doing the SLIGHTEST BIT of finger lifting would realize it's like 2 blocks away from ground zero, in what used to be a burlington coat factory, next to a strip club. even still, it's the DEFINITION of irrational prejudice to hold the deeds of a few (and it could be argued that the only connection between 9/11 terrorists and the people who would be using the mosque is that they are arab by heritage) against the rest of the group.

It's not a big deal, first off, it's not even at Ground Zero, and secondly, wasn't America founded on the basis of Freedom? ie. the freedom to practice any religion? So If you are in America, you have the freedom to be Muslim. How many Mosque's are in America anyway?

did you read my post at all? i said NEAR ground zero.

i also said yes, it is considered unconstitutional since it denys religious rights. but IN MY OPINION it shouldnt be put there due to the circumstances and out of respect to the victims families.

so how come people are getting upset about a community center 2 blocks away, but not a "mosque" that's already been in existence for the past 20 years a block further away?

i mean is anyone really grasping about what's really being built here? its a community center/mosque. meaning they will take anyone in and its a place for people to gather at a safe place... but i guess NY really does love its empty and run down buildings! would it make you feel better if it was a YMCA with a mosque in the basement?

all of this. even though it's just islamophobia, part of me understands the opposition to the center, but at the same time i can't help but believe the whole debate was fabricated to draw attention away from republicans voting NO on the 9/11 responders bill...especially since there's already a mosque standing a few blocks from ground zero.

Im American as an one, but im not an ignorant American. I would first like to state that this sect of islam doesnt have ties to terrorism and I would also like to state its two blocks away its not right on top of ground zero. So let them build it in all honesty, if we hold back from letting them build the mosque i feel we are take a step back from the america that are four fathers set out to build. One based on religious freedom, so i say let them build it. If anything it will make are ties to islam and the middle east even strong, it shows that we as a nation want to bridge the gap.

He can't be speaking up about protecting what most people feel to be unalienable rights?

He can make press confrences saying that he supports the mosque being built. Even if he wasn't supporting the constitution religious tolerance is key to soft power, so it would still be a good thing for him to suppport. (soft power is diplomatic ties to other countries and such)

but overall, he is trying to support his interpretation of the constitution.
