D90 replacement already??

Ok guys,

So I was gona go out and pickup a d90 next week to replace my d60. But I have found a ton of discussion on other sites saying that a d90 replacement could come out within the next couple of weeks.

Anybody hear anything like this? Should I get the d90 now or hold out without a camera for a few weeks and see if a new line comes out?

new line is due to come out this fall sometime, all the cameras generally run on a 11 month cycle for being updated, i would wait for now because hopefully nikon is planning something big to catch up to canon

makes sense, autofocus on the video would be nice. But since I won't be filming that much. I think I might stick with the current d90 and use the saved money to get some better glass down the road.

then wait anyways, as the price on d90s will drop like a brick when the new stuff comes out.

seriously, wait to see if there's something new you want, then, if a d90 works for you, cop it cheap.

saving money for glass is a great idea though.

That's what I'm thinking, but if I can get a d90 with a 18-105 kit right now for $1200, how much do you think it will drop?

here's your first clue - don't waste your time on that lens, or at least sell it as soon as you get it (which may be the better choice since buying a kit will give a discount)

I'm sure it will drop a considerable amount. I think the d50 kits with the silly/awesome 28-80 and the shitty 70-200 (or whatever that kit tele zoom was) dropped from about 850 to 500 ish when the newer kits came out, but that's a pretty rough estimate.

People dont realize this but at one time the D90 WAS a ballin camera.  It is nowhere a shitty camera.  However, due to technological advances in others, other cameras are now more superior.  At the time the D90 came out, it was a decent camera.

yeah I have no idea guys. i think it is a pretty good camera for what I need. I mean i'm a middle level photographer, I'm shooting some skiing and action, but mostly landscapes and portraits. So I mean, the video feature is nice, but since I don't film a lot, the lack of quality won't hurt me for now. And I would def wait, but I really want a new camera for my vacation later in the summer. Plus everyone I talk to say the image is in the glass not the body. So how much would I be sacraficing if I don't wait?

going from a d60 to a d90 is a dumb upgrade. If you're going to spend the coin to upgrade your camera, spend the money on a used or refurbed d300  or d200 and get into some decent gear as opposed to moving from a soccer mom camera to an expensive soccer mom camera

Im well aware at one time the D90 was a good camera, first dslr with video, but did you know that at one time caves were a ballin house? Doesnt mean Id spend any money on a cave.

OP - Keep your d60 and go buy a $100 flip video camera, that way when the D90 replacement comes out you can either get the new cam, or save over $100 on the D90..

barely in my opinion... it shoots videos and has a few more megapixels wahoo how awesome

upgrading your camera should happen at a time when you are truly limited by the abilities of your camera. Why make a minor incremental upgrade when you could save your money and make a major upgrade when the time is right. On that note if you're on a tight budget and could benefit from upgraded equipment you are better off buying a slightly older model more advanced camera that will better serve your needs.

How do you know when to upgrade? When you don't shoot on "auto" mode anymore is a good time to put some real gear in your hands and step away from that soccer mom crap

I dont get why people buy cameras like the D40/60/soon to be 90. You can go buy a used D200 for around $500 and have a way better camera with more controls at the cost of maybe 2MP.

FredMiranda, Craigslist, hell.. my dad bought a D200 from an American ebay 'store' a few months ago for $525.. Perfect condition with around 30k actuations.

The d200 used the old nikon sensor architecture, which was the main reason that people complained about nikon DSLR camera bodies. It was pretty ill, but the d300 and all the camreas that use the new architecture (D90 included even) perform much better. I was blown away when I finally got into a body with the new sensors.

This was a comment you shouldn't overlook, a few posts up, which is the only reason I would look into the 200:

And what you said before about the image being in the glass and not the body is mostly very very true. Don't ever buy bad glass. It just lets you down. If you are at all enthused with actually producing good images, then spend money on good glass.

but most importantly (imo), the D90 has internal auto-focus so if you want the auto-focus option and you don't want to have to buy AF-S lenses for an extra $200+ the D90 is a great upgrade.

well you guys have made me think about this pretty hard. Basically my situation is, since I'm just a kid in school without a job, I have a pretty tight budget. What appealed to me about the d90 was the video and internal autofocus. I thought that the d90 body would last me a good amount of time, and that I can get pretty decent shots. I'm thinking that I can keep it a few years and progressively save up for a pro lens or just some better glass over all. Just a thought... I mean I like the idea of the d200, but are there other bodies out there that would be better? If you want to check out some of the shots I have taken with the d60. Check out this link.

Some are better then others, but I am really just getting into photography seriously, I don't think I know enough yet to use such a complex camera like the d200 or 300.

also, I just get so pissed at how slowly the d60 processes. That is one of the reasons I want to get rid of the body too rather then just getting new glass. I mean, it was a great camera for me to start up with, I just think It is time for a bit of an upgrade and I don't have the budget and won't for a while to make a big upgrade.

If you want to learn how in photography, I would suggest trying to take a photo class and doing darkroom stuff. I learned the most about photography in general with a 50 year old olympus OM-1 and a 50 mm lens with black and white film.

Using a camera body really comes down to white balance, ISO, and getting the correct exposure. Most everything else can be nice but isn't really THAT important. What's most important to producing a good image is knowing your lenses and their capabilities/limitations in relationship to your camera and composition.

I think you will be fine with a lower end body. What's going to make your images better is practice and knowing how to use good glass.

Hate to be harsh ... ha.. but you should probably just stick to the D60 until you can find something else to shoot besides natty lit flowers.


Some of the shots werent bad, but they were basically just macro shots of flowers.. come on dude.

spend your money on glass, the difference between good vs. cheap glass is way more evident than the difference between an slr that is only once cycle newer than the last, especially if you're mostly shooting photos.

That being said, the recent Nikon stuff is amazing. I shoot canon with L glass and if money were no object I'd have switched to nikon in a heartbeat.

yeah if you can find one, the D200 is boss. That's what all my pictures are with, I am considering upgrading soon to the D3s, but for the short time being, the D200 is a really great camera.

Plus, the camera doesn't make you a better photographer...

yeah def get the 50mm f1.8, amazing and one of the best or best lenses that nikon makes. no need to waste the extra 300$ on a f1.4 or f1.4g version. AF is amazingly fast for not being af-s.

I'm pretty sure that besides being a little more closed down, the 1.8 performs better than the 1.4 on all fronts. But I just read that briefly somewhere, I'm not really certain.

A D90 for $1,200 seems like a rip off. You can save a little more and swoop a 7D. I'm in the same boat with not having tons of money so I found a lightly used T1i body for $400 and spent the extra couple hundo on a 28-105mm f/3.5 and a 50mm f/1.8, battery grip and a nice tri-pod. The video isnt as great as a the T2i, ect but I saved lots of money and wouldnt of been able to afford the crucial accessories if I spent more on the camera.

for anybody interested in Nikon. The d90 replacement (to be called d7000) is set to be announced within the next 2 or three weeks. It is sounding like a pretty baller camera. Here are some basic specs.
