I5 or i7 core for editing?

I need a new computer for editing HD from my HV30, and possibly better cameras in the future. I've decided on the new macbook pro with i5/i7 cores, but I'm undecided on whether the extra 300 bucks for the i7 would be worth it. Suggestions?

It's not totally necessary, you would be totally fine with the i5 but the i7 would definitely speed up your render times a bit.

ya i got the 13inch macbook pro with the i5 and upgraded 500gb and it runs FCP7 and edits hmc150 footage easily.

and i edited footage on a 2.33ghz core duo for two years, you'll be fine with i5.

2.66 i7 is only 20% faster than 2.4 or 2.53 i5. I just bought the 15 inch 2.4 i5 and the guy made it pretty obvious that the jump between the 2.4 and 2.53 is virtually nothing and the 2.66 is only 20%.

alright thanks, looks like it's not worth the 300 bucks. also, when I max out the RAM, is there a specific brand/type to get, or is it all the same?

It has to be PC3-8500 DDR3 1066MHz. A bunch of brands make it. You can read through the user reviews and stuff. That being said, be careful. Users have been reporting issues with Macbook Pros after upgrading them to 8gb of RAM. Specifically, it seems that when you initially boot up and the intel integrated graphics are being used (as opposed to the Nvidia discrete), there is a lot of screen tearing for a few minutes until the computer warms up. I just started hearing about it recently, and i dont know how wide spread of a problem it really is. It is probably a fixable firmware problem though.
