To the OP: If you're planning on riding a serious distance, you should NOT get a single speed, make sure your bike has a carbon fork, and you should get fitted by someone who knows what they're doing. (Fitting will make your riding much more efficient and comfortable. Your brother could probably even do it.)
You will be miserable on a single speed bike. There are plenty of entry level road bikes in the 500-700 range. Try getting a new 2009 model; you could probably find a good deal. Also, some might disagree with me, but don't waste your money on a Trek. You pay a premium for the brand name. You could get an equally good frame with better components for like 200-300 less.
But there such a pain in the ass to work on.
I couldnt either, im 6ft one and between a cbr, ninja, and gxsr id have to get a gxsr. Feels better
