punk isnt music with all that much bass so i would suggest going for a nice set of speakers, id recomend eclipse or pioneer maybe. if you dont feel thats enough bass then go bigger for the subs. but take it in stages and dont buy shitty quality stuff, youll be much happier later. all depends on your budget too

i would get a new deck and a subwoofer/amp combo. you don't necessarily need the deck, but most stock head units won't let you hook up an amp to them (ie no rca outputs to go to your amp). plus, if you did manage to hook a sub to your stock deck, the bass control that you'd have to turn down for your regular speakers would make your sub play very quiet as well. a new deck will have separate level controls for your regular speakers and your subwoofer.

ya I was lookin at e-bay ot some of the Pyle decks with rca our puts. they are dirt ass cheap. adn ya I know this about punk music, but I did mention that occationally I listen to dub musci and I like to turn up the bass sometimes when I do.

I would look into a new deck and new speakers. Depending on speaker size, you might get enough quality bass out of 6 1/2'''s or 6x9's, but you might not. Then you might want to consider a small sub (they tend to be more musical, play a little better/accurate above 70hz, and less overbearing in the low end).

And yes you can create an RCA out of a stock deck, the trick is to get bass blockers (so the deck no longer controls the bass input into your rear speakers, and get a line out converter. This will tap into your speaker wire (before the bass blocker), creating an RCA that will be a full signal (including the highs, so you'll want an amp that has a low-pass crossover, or get a separate crossover) sending a signal to your amp for you sub.

Step 1: New Speakers!
no matter what else you buy (head unit, sub etc..) your speakers will still sound like shit if you've blown them...and alot of the stock paper cone speakers are easily blown. Getting yourself a good set of speakers may be enought to give you the sound you want. I know my truck has great base and high without any extra subs.
Step 2: Extras
as above you dont need to buy a sub to get a good sounding system...and you dont need to shake your trunk lid off either. most people drop an amp and sub in just for thundering base...but for music value it sounds like ass and you look like a little geno punk kid. eBay is a great place for find a deal on a new head unit if you want to spend the money...and avoid the super cheap ones as they will burn out and dont give any better sound then the stock unit you pulled out.

So if your going to up grade:
Speakers first - then head unit - then amp/subs

the only problem with what you are saying is that chances are the stock deck from an 87 car will not have enough power to properly power new aftermarket speakers. Therefore, improper power + new speakers = blown speakers (potentially) and damaged speakers, which is just wasted money. That is why I was saying new head unit and speaker upgrade, you can get decent stuff without breaking the bank.

the only problem that you will have with your current head unit is that it wont allow the new speakers to perform at their best. it wont blow them out though, its not powerful enough. a new head will allow you to hear the best quality music with the speakers for there are higher watts going out to each channel (speakers)

you do more damage to a speaker by under powering them and turning them up (creating distortion) than if you have too much power. Too much can burn the voice coils and literally overwhelm the speaker (for lack of a better description), but under powering them will lead to distortion and damage as well as damage to your ears (distortion does a lot of damage as well as shear decibel level). When a speaker distorts, it looses the ability to properly control the movements of the cone, thus leading to more damage.

It only takes 1/3 of RMS to actually power a speaker, but RMS is the wattage range that speaker will perform at its best (and with the least damage) - thus why I was saying both head unit and speakers.

depending on your budget, there are several options. a new deck will make non-blown out stock speakers sound a lot better. new speakers would be the next step if you want better sound, or if your original speakers are blown. subs come last as they are the least important if you have a small budget. i have mb quart component speakers running off a 200 watt alpine amp, panasonic deck, and 2 12' jl audios running off 1000 watts. it sounds really fucking good.
