Things to do in and around Seattle.

I'm headed out to the PNW for a few weeks and I'm wondering what i should add to the to do list. I'm staying in Vashon with a friend for 10ish days. Any notable places to hike, skate, or just places I should see? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm from Vermont and this will be my first time out West. Thanks in advance.

The Seattle Center has a nice new concrete park so I would check that out, along with all of the Seattle Center in general.  Both Mrs. T and the panda (sorry, just forgot your SN) recommend Pike Place Market and I support that 100%.  It's something you should always do.  If you get the chance maybe check out a Sounders or a Mariners game. 

I don't know Vashon too well but there are many places within an hour drive from Seattle that offer great day hikes, especially now that it is summer.

there are about 2 days worth of stuff in seattle that can be done on foot out of down town (hop the foot ferry from Vashon). If your into museums, there are a ton of great ones you can get to via bus. Museum of flight is one of the best in the country, so if you like planes and the history around them, that would be a great place to go. (half a day)

The space needle / science center is a great bet, just don't do the dinner thing. Its over rated, and over priced. Eat somewhere near by, or downtown instead. Google can find you some good places.
For a good one day in Seattle, I would hop the ferry across, walk down the waterfront and up to pike place, then over to west lake center, hop the monorail to Seattle Center, do that stuff, back to downtown and head south for a Sounders game. The Mariners are fucking gay, and I wish the Sonics took them when they left. Find a place to eat between seattle center and the game.

REI is also worth checking out if your into outdoors stuff, I take it for granted, but when I take visitors there they are blown away. walking distance from convention center bus station.

As for skate spots, I don't know of any good city spots, but finding a local park is probably your best bet. Pretty sure there is one at seattle center.

For hiking you have both the cascades and the olympics right there. Both Olympic NP and Rainier NP are HUGE. You will not see all of either park, so don't try. I would suggest a few 3-4 day trips, depending on how fast you can move. We have mountains here, and you will cover a lot of vertical, so keep that in mind. Also before you decide on a trail, keep in mind that quite a few are still washed out or have trees over them. Ask the local rangers when you sign in at the ranger station. To avoid the crowds I would suggest trails outside of Mt Rainier NP, and in the southern Olympics.

crown inn at 95th & aurora is under the radar

seattle motor inn got shut down, that place was ill, so columbus motor inn at 97th is rockin in its stead

best pick up corners at 92nd, 102nd, and perhaps north at 117th. you can thank me later

In all seriousness, things to do:

Get Than brothers Pho on the Ave.
Olympic sculpture park at sunset on a clear day.
Dicks drive in on Capitol Hill around 1 am.
Walk through UW, sit in on a random lecture in one of the quad's buildings.
Latte at Vivace coffee on capitol hill.
Salumi meats for lunch in downtown.
Find the epic gum wall at Pike Place market, beers at Pike Brewery after, cabaret at Can Can much later.
Golden gardens at sunset.
Walk through Discovery park after dusk, find the wicca shrines in the forest.
Dim Sum at House of Hong, International district.
Beers at Brauers in Fremont, 40 drafts and a 6 page menu of bottled belguims and craft beers.
Movie at the Neptune or Egyptian theaters, old movie houses that rock.
Sushi at Musashi's in Wallingford.
Elliot Bay bookstore in downtown.

All of the above are gateway places, do the activity and then wander around the area for more adventure.

Yo you've found those wicca shrines too??

My friend and I were looking for a good spot for some bike jumps and stumbled across those.  We got so creeped out, there was like a doll and a bottle of wine or something and a book we did not dare open. All sorts of crazy rock designs and stuff too.

I ended up doing a lot of things on this list. Pike Place Market was touristy, but definitely cool. SAM had Andy Warhol and Kurt Cobain which was pretty sick. REI was massive. Alki was a beach. Dicks burgers were surprisingly good. UW was almost as massive as REI. Lower Woodland was a very sick park and I also skated the Ballard bowl a fair bit. Thanks for the suggestions, now i'm off to Portland.

The Seattle Premium Outlets at Tulalip are usually a good bet, but are a small drive north of Seattle.

Also what cobracommander said about the space needle. I go to school in seattle and have never been up there. But I heard that its like $15 to get up there, so you might as well get dinner up there cause then its free to get up and you get dinner to. Will probably be more then $15 but I think it rotates so as you eat you see different views. Sounds pretty sick. haha
