Just a weird thought about aliens and stuff

all these scientists and astronauts or whatever are looking for water on other planets, but life on other planets is probably completely different than humans, maybe not COMPLETELY different if its planets in our solar system, but still different. so what im getting at is what if these creatures dont need water to survive? what if we are just looking for water when we should be looking for actual living things on other planets? huh?

This prob is complete bs but here is understanding behind it. As far as we know, water is essential for life to exist even on a cellular level. So while it may be possible for life to exist without water somehow, we cannot assume things we do not know for certain. Therefore, we are better off looking for other forms of life from what we currently know are requirements for life to exits e.g. water. It's hard enough to find life as it is, if we through out all "criteria" that we know that life needs then the search becomes even harder cause we don't know what to look for.

In addition we simply do not have the technology to search entire planets for life effectively. This is why we are looking for water, and if we find it we can expand the search into further detail.

And water is essential to life because of the way it is used to break down polymers, oxygen forms 2 covalent bonds, making it the ideal bridge molecule between monomers. When monomers are split, the oxygen goes to one and it gains a hydrogen from water making a hydroxyl group, and the remaining -OH is added to the second monomer, forming two stable, complete monomers. This characteristic could also be seen with a molecule like hydrogen sulfide because sulfur can form 2 covalent bonds, but because of the weight and size of sulfur (not to mention the fact that hydrogen sulfide is toxic), water seems like the best indicator of a planet that could support life.

to our knowledge life requires water, however our knowledge extends to the tiniest fraction imaginable of the universe. there's so much out there that we will never know or see

Scientists know this but it's much easier to search for water knowing that it can support life vs. searching for another substance and not knowing if it can support life. Chances are, if you find an ocean, you've found life.
