Pros and cons to different editing programs

So there is alot of discussion on different editing programs and what one does what. I use Final Cut Studio 2 and i know a small amount of other editing programs i think it would be good to get a thread going about pros and cons of the top editing programs out there on the market. Lets not turn this into a hate thread but more on specific things on what each program does different.

I really like FCS3 and FCP7. It's pretty much all I've used but its simple to get the basics down and then learning the more advanced features is pretty easy. I really like using prores too.

I defiantly like the ease of use of FCP but Galin a guy who we edit all the time uses Adobe CS4. one of the nicest features that adobe has that i cant seem to find in final cut is Clip Speed Drag. You are able to shrink your clip down to whatever length you want and adobe automatically changes the speed of the clip to fit.

I'm an Adobe Premiere Pro guy too.

My biggest con? The label - people give you shit because it's not "an industry standard"...

I agree. I've been using Premiere Pro CS4 now for a while and really like it. I think the 'Media Browser' feature makes importing and locating media so much easier and faster as well.

i can do this in whatever version of fcp i have, its on y other computer and i don't remember the version.
I can just click on the end of the clip and drag

I used to use vegas back when i was editing on a pc, but i've been using final cut express for the past three years. My high school used fcp and now my college uses fcp so it's nice that I can learn how to do things at home rather than spending a bunch of time trying to learn a new program while in the classroom.

I've heard a bunch of rumors that a new fcp is being released this fall so hopefully i can get that as soon as it comes out. I have figured out everything there is to know with fce and i feel like i'm being held back by its capabilities.

Ive Used final cut pro 7, Vegas pro 9 (i think thats the number) and Premiere CS3-CS5 and i have to say overall Premiere Pro CS5 is the best of all. Its MUCH more stable then CS4 and supports a bunch more formats, and i just like the workflow in Premiere much more than Final Cut or Vegas.

never really used anything other then final cut.

I seem to like the visual appearance...not hard to look at all day. another thing i like is the quicktime codecs AIC and Proress...

this thread is going to be interesting. i use fce 4 (i think). used to use vegas platinum 9 . fce kills vegas no doubt.

I'm not talking about trimming a clip. this feature allows your in and out points to stay the same while speeding the clip up in order to fit.

I use vegas Its alright when i first started filming and editing i used adobe premiere i was super bad at it, when i get my mac im for sure getting fcp

i use vegas cause i have a shit laptop and cant run anything else on it. no problems tho

Final Cut Pro is amazing, you can do literally anything with it, and with enough knowledge of the program you can pull off some really sick edits. Not to mention if you know how to use Motion well, you can create some sick effects.

Has anybody used motion a fair amount? My computer cant handel it. How does it compair to After Effects? After Effects is a pretty impressive program once you actually figure out how to run it. Big learning curve

motion is nothing like after effects, its basically a 3d animation program. Its HUGE too, like 40gb or something, I cant fit it on my macbook. I'm going to start working with it soon in my film class, I'll let you know how it is.

I do really like after effects, it definitely does have a big learning curve for sure but you can do a lot with it. Very useful program. My only complaint is that I use it with FCP, so I have to edit the clips separately in there before I move them over to the program and vice versa. Plus its not a fan of prores

FCP 7 is wonderful I learn new things about it every time I use it, couldn't ask for anythimg more.

in fcp: time remap tool, SSS keyboard short cut> make a keyframe on the end of your clip>toggle clip keyframes> drag the keyframe to where you want the end to be, speeds it up or slows it down.

Vegas Pro 9, if I edited more (or maybe when the ski season starts up again), I would try out Premiere CS5.
