Replying to NS Longboarders, please read
A few days ago, I was cruising down a decent hill, going probably around 20 to 25 mph, when all four wheels slid out and I took a spill. Lots of road rash and bumps and bruises, but nothing serious (though I wasn't wearing a helmet.) However, it was definitely enough of a wake up call to make me realize that it's pretty stupid to be bombing hills without a helmet, considering how easy it is to wear one.
When I got back inside, I got a phone call telling me about a kid who went to my high school, who I had hung out with several times and was a ski buddy of mine. He was longboarding at night, without a helmet, and got hit by a golf cart, his head cracked on the pavement, and died in the hospital. He was young, and his death is so unexpected and tragic. He didn't deserve it in any way.
I guess the message I'm try to give is that despite that helmets might not look cool, and they might seem bothersome, they do save lives. It's not worth it to risk your life, when by doing something so simple, you can be safe. Casey's death has impacted our community in a terrible way, and yesterday's graduation found us all with a bittersweet taste in our mouths. May he rest in peace.
