I believe it was before this past 09-10 season when I made a thread called "How long did it take you to get sick at rails" I made this thread because I am an avid video watcher on newschoolers and I see kids slay rails every day. I just wondered how long it took everyone to get so good because I want to "slay" rails also.
I received several very positive responses to this thread which motivated me to accomplish my goals this season. I made a trick list comprised of backside and frontside 270s out and switchups, switch on, and 270 on. I accomplished all of these tricks and am very happy to have the building blocks of rails.
Now it's summer and I made a new backyard setup to practice on. I can do my 270s out and switchups, but I just CANT seem to turn my switchups into combination tricks such as k-feds, britneys, etc. It is so frustrating because I think my setup is definitely good enough to do these tricks on. I have trouble when I get to un ral and I just can't seem to even get to the point of trying these combos.
My new question is........How long did it take you guys to go from Switchups to combos? And what can I do to make it happen smoother and quicker?
Thanks Newschoolers
Will

The same thing was happening with me at he beginning of last season. The way I learned my first combo(k-fed) which then allowed me to began working on things like all 8, and pretzels was like this.I realized that I was taking way too long to scissor my front foot for the first switchup, and that was not letting me have enough time for the 270 out. I then proceeded to do the switchup faster, and voila, things started happening. I went from where you are now, to doing things like dub switchup 270 out and some other stuff just by making that little tweak. Good luck!

I got extremely good advice when i was learning k feds on a short box, and had to do it really quickly. In the small time you are in the air going in to the box (I also like to come in a little from the side) get your foot into the pretzeling position so you land on the box already pretzeling. Just throw the switch up a little harder than usual and you should be good. Just remember to throw a full 180 for the switch up, and that should keep you spinning

Thats cheating and only works on boxes...when it comes to rails its all about edge controll

Don't call it this. It sounds gay and most people don't know what your talking about. We don't need a name for every combination. As for kfeds and such just set your rotation harder and think about setting before your on the box.

dip your edge sooner and keep your momentum moving with it and boom. took me no time at all (like one hike session on a box) to go from switchups to sameway combos.

yeah definitely try and get your switch up as soon as possible if you plan on pretzelling it but i when i first started doing sameway combos (kfeds and blind swap front 2's) i found it easier to do the switch up a little later and bounce of the rail. kind of like you're going for a 4 out but get some pop once you do your switch up. that made it quite a bit easier IMO.

i had the same problem as that... idk if it was because i only had a 12 foot rail or whatever... but before i dropped in, i would make sure i knew what i was going to do and stay focused. the key is to do the switchup faster. if you cant get it fast enough, just practice switch ups for a while until you are really comfortable. then you will be able to get them around faster and be ready to k fed. also you can practice unatty 270 outs if you want. hope that helps

i think it took me like a year, the thing is you have to set your switch up early so you have time to set up for your two out

It's all about the scissor and timing. When you get on the rail dig you edge in and set your switch up harder then if you plan to do a continued spin (i.e. k-fed) keep your shoulders turned, scissor as soon as you're back on the rail and let your momentum carry you though the spin, if you plan to pretzel back (i.e. front swap-front 2) then try and keep your shoulders more forward (but not completely forward) and land in your scissor, and pop a bit more off the end of the rail to spin back.
