Shotgun mics.

So. I am looking into buying a shotgun mic.

The sound quality in my Canon HV40 just isn't cutting it for any sort of interview, but I really have no clue what to be looking for in a mic.

Any suggestions/help would be appreciated and will result in receiving +k of course.

i have the mic adapter that hmc40's use and a cheap'ish shotgun mic, pics if interested,

Been lurking around the HV20,30,40 forum and the general consensus for mics seems to be this.

I was hoping to pay a little less, but maybe this is how much I need to get rid of for quality sound.

i have it and love it, only problem is you should get a gain control of some sort or preamp, it will just sound a lot better.

I've both read and heard from others that the Rode VideoMic is pretty unbeatable quality for the price

Look into the Zoom series as well, Zoom h4n, h4, h2.  Just picked up a used H2 on ebay for 81 bucks.

i'm about a year away from graduating with a degree in audio production, so take my advice or leave it, but it's solid advice...

please don't ever use the mic on your camera and expect professional quality sound. mics on cameras are complete crap. they're literally put there so people won't complain about it not being there- they serve no practical purpose as the sound is so bad, it's unusable 90% of the time.

if you want to get a decent shotgun- and want to use it CORRECTLY- look towards getting a boom set-up. any mic you mount on your camera is going to limit you to the point where you might as well be cutting off your balls. Sennheiser makes some really quality shotguns that aren't going to fuck your wallet over.

just please, don't use your camera's mic... it's so, so bad.

I'm making the same point. The built in mic is not good enough, so I am trying to get a new mic so that I do NOT have to use the built in mic anymore.

Do you have any more specific suggestions from Sennheiser?

does anyone know anything about the sg-108 shotgun dv stereo mic?? its real cheap or the hotshot shotgun mic? are they bad miss pleaseeee help

i have the rode videomic pro and im really happy with the sound it produces. and ive used my fair share of shotgun mics. for mounting on the camera tho, rode is the way to go.

but you mentioned you need a better mic for interviews and what not and depending on what exactly you are doing and what your budget is, you might look into some sennheiser lav mics and a recorder like someone mentioned earlier. those will pic up great sound for interviews. but if you are going onboard shotgun mic, i recommend rode, ive used a few of their mics now and love them all

Videomic is good, but depending on your budget there are much better options.


If you're into external recorders, check out tascams dr40 and dr100 (think that's what its called).
