"I support the troops but not the war?" whaaaa?

I keep seeing bumper stickers that say this, and it pisses me off. I feel like its a contradiction, and people who dont support the war dont support the troops... people like this make it seem like troops are being sent overseas against their will, like they didnt sign up for the military on their own. Its a fact that a large majority of troops are republican. I dont know, i just wanted to see your guys'  take on the matter

i believe we did the right thing, but now, it has just gotten ridiculous. Way too much money has been spent and way too many lives have been lost for what cause? nothing.

its not confusing, it means that you support the troops and everything they do for our country but you disagree with the reason we are fighting.

The Taliban has had a choke hold on the afghan people for far too long. Does anyone remember watching the video about skating in afghanistan? They couldn't do that under the taliban. Is that not worth fighting for? Under Taliban control afghans can't even grow the crops necessary to feed themselves.

If we leave and the Taliban returns to power than Al-Queda will come back to Afghanistan and the Afghan people will not see an end to poverty and oppression. Nations are not built over night. Learn from our history, liberty comes from great sacrifice.

Why is this our concern though? It is not our fight. Our fight is with the terrorists who caused 9/11, who aren't in Afghanistan anymore.

I think it's funny that everyone says they ssupport the troops, really though, how do you support them? Do you support them by saying "I support the troops"? Do you actually send them things? Cards? letters? How does one support them? Honestly...

Are you serious? Do you think Al Queda is done with afghanistan? The Terrorists who plotted 9/11 operated out of afghanistan under the Taliban. The Taliban gets money, weapons, and fighters from Al Queda. If we leave Afghanistan unstable then the taliban could regain control and Al Queda would be right in with them.

Afghanistan has been out concern since the 1980's, but we ignored the problem and it put us in the situation we are in today.

You are missing a valuable lesson from Russia. This is HOW Al Qaeda wins wars. It bleeds countries like it did to the Soviets. We are so oblivious to everything going on we don't even realize Bin Laden has everything he wants: The US fighting an unknown enemy in unfamiliar terrain. It's a recipe for disaster and it is right in front of our closed eyes.

Until we realize that this is something we can't just stamp out by flexing our muscles like we did in the Cold War we are forever doomed. Washington needs a foreign policy revamp and a history lesson.

Its not hypocritical at all. its like saying you support your friend just not his drinking. People with those stickers on their cars dont want their sons and daughters to be forgotten or hated like the troops that came home from vietnam. Those soldiers were drafted and they were still viewed negatively when they returned. All they are saying is,  whether or not the soldiers should be there, we should still  support their patriotism regardless of the governments agenda. But you all should just keep arguing about something that is as verifyable the argument for god vs creationism. its totally amusing!!! and remember that saying about winning an argument on the internet and winning the special olympics?... even if you win ur still retarded.

hahah i totally fucking agree with that bumper sticker. bush had someone's stick up his bum and decided to go to war because of imaginary weapons. now, we are fighting a war i do not support. i do, however, support the lives of soldiers who joined the forces. i would support them as well as the war if it was a war that we should be involved in

Exactly, if i'm not mistaken wasn't only one of the hijackers from Afghanistan, and the rest were from Saudi Arabia? The Taliban have won a battle of attrition before with the Soviets and they are doing it again with NATO. Afghanistan is an endless money pit the offers nothing in return. While we are fighting the Taliban they are not our true enemy. They just want us out of their country so they can implement sharia law again. Al Queda is our enemy, which dont exist in Afghanistan anymore.

The real problem we have to worry about is Pakistan. Over population, a fragile government, a Taliban and Al Queada strong hold and a stock pile of nucler arms is a bad combination.

I think it is you that needs a history lesson. Al Qaeda did not fight the soviets, but rather their organization developed in the pandemonium that followed soviet withdrawl. Al Qaeda was organized after the soviets withdrew from afghanistan. Al Qaeda has never won a war. The reason the soviets lost is because countries from all across the world backed up the mujahideen in afghanistan. Without foreign aid the opposition to the soviets would have been crushed.

I hope you realize that wasn't the case. Since the beginning of time no country has been able to conquer Afghanistan dating back to Alexandre the Great.

The Soviets lost due to poor tactical planing, lack of knowledge of the area and little to no combat experience in that sort of mountainous topography. A striking parallel which is happening today with NATO. Some of the Mujahideen would also form the group that would later be reorganized into the Taliban

Getting back to topic though, the Taliban is not who we were originally after. The main focus of capturing Bin Laden has now taken a back seat to the wasted time of "Nation Building" a country that once we pull out will fall back into Taliban control in a matter of months. There is nothing we can do to stop this inevitability.

You don't need to teach me anything about Afghan history. I was referring to Al Qaeda as the Mujahideen which is exactly what they were minus Massoud which broke into the Northern Alliance. I guess I should have clarified but it should be understood that they are pretty much the same. Add in a few hundred troops from Sudan and Indonesia and you have the majority of it.

You are completely missing my point. We are falling into the same exact trap and you can't deny it. Bin Laden hasn't attacked us because he has us right where he wants us. An endless war that he can recruit just as much fodder as he wants by praying on the people that are swept up in fundamentalist Islam that you are mentioning we propped against the Soviets. This wasn't made to be a direct comparison as you are making it. Again, this isn't something you can simply just fight off. It is an identity problem now, and there are far too many people that understand that. Unfortunately the US government and public isn't one of them.

It does matter where the hijackers were from, they were operating out of afghanistan. The problem is not where the hijackers come from, but rather that they were allowed a base of operations.

Yes, they are in other countries, but the governments of those countries are not directly tied to Al Qaeda like the Taliban is.

As you point out there is other countries that allow the Taliban to use them as bases of operation. We should be less concerned with Afghanistan an more worried about the east African peninsula where their new recruiting centres are.

Let me further expand. Using military action will not stomp them out, rather just force them into different regions and back into areas of post occupation.

He's somewhat right, the stinger missiles we funneled through Pakistan really made the difference. Yes attrition and tactics had a lot to do with it but when Soviet helicopters were dropping like flies that is when it really took a turn for the worst.

The only thing my comparison was making is that the same thing is happening...like you said a money pit. That was the plan for him all along and eventually he will get what he wants: the US out of the Middle East. It's inevitable at this point. Our pride can take a hit for once if it is going to save countless lives, an already growing debt, and hopefully will give us a reality check.

Yes you are correct, I guess I was just trying to get at more of the tactics used, it was the first time the Soviets had truly experienced mountain guerrilla warfare, something they were not trained to fight.
