Ski making ???

to anyone who has made skis or any experince with the building of skis i wanted to make skis for my senior project

so i was wondering some things

1) should i (17 years old) even think about making my own skis with hardly any wood working skills ... sure i can build nasty backyard rails but this shit seems hard

2) if you think it is possible how much do you think building my own press and getting all the material will cost

3) so even if i do make a press with all the materiel how many tries will it take till i get a ski i can actually ride

i thought about making skis in my last year of carpentry and jointery in highschool. but you need a lot of shit man. its an expensive undertaking.

Expensive is the main thing, and you probably cant expect much out of your first few pairs anyways. Basically you need raw materials for the skis which starts around $50 and only goes up. After that you need tools for cutting the wood, tapering it, bending and shaping the edges, fiber glass if your going with a wood core, and then laminating it in your press and of course working with the poly base... So yes its doable with enough money, time and patients... I would say make a sumer setup for your senior project

On a senior project level it wouldn't be terribly difficult.  If you have some tools (jigsaw, router, drill, belt sander, table saw, air compressor, a planar is helpful) you can do it for relatively cheap.  You can construct a pneumatic press out of wood or try to find some free steel.  If you are still in high school you should have access to some sort of CNC machine to make templates.  Materials for a pair of skis will be at least $150 if you just use a wood sidewall.  As someone has already said, read up on skibuilders.com before you try anything.

Making skis is expensive. Very expensive to start with. Take what you expect it to cost you and double it,at least.
