Replying to Gulf of Mexico dead zone
With all the outrage about the oil leak it's surprising that no one mentions that the Mississippi River Delta was already a dead zone. Run off from livestock farming (mostly feces) make the gulf at the mouth of the Mississippi River inhabitable to any sea life. Obviously the oil leak is a huge issue, but it was an accident. The environmental destruction from meat production is something we all ignore for the low price and sweet taste of animals.
The New Jersey sized cess-pool created by our food's rivers of shit is just one example of the problems created by the current farming situation. The colossal waste of resources is staggering, 1/3rd of all raw materials and fossil fuels consumed in the U.S. are used in animal production. The Ogallala aquifer, the world's largest underground water system, will be exhausted in 50 years; Turing the "breadbasket" into a barren wasteland. If water used by the meat industry were not subsidized by taxpayers, regular hamburger meat would cost $35 a pound. Since these subsidies are paid with tax dollars, we're all just picking up the tab on the back-end. The same goes for the corn and grains grown as feed. I'm sure you're all aware the oceans are being overfished, well, up to half of all the fish caught are fed to livestock.
You can just go with the flow, say everybody's doing it and continue shoving chicken nuggets down your throat but sooner or later this shit is gonna catch up to us.
