im headed to Lake Placid Ramp Camp on wednesday, and my parents were gonna make me drive the 5 hours there. 5 hours isnt bad, but i've had an unreasonable fear of driving long distances since december of 08. my friends and i were headed home from mount snow, of the seven of us, six were sleeping. we crashed and my best friend was killed, i was sitting next to him. we had left at 4am to get to snow, so we were tired as fuck. now, i hate the thought of driving alone for more than like 3 hours, call me a bitch i really dont care. so my parents and i decided to book a flight with Cape Air, on a fuckin Cessna 402, a 9 passenger plane. its small as fuck and kinda crazy to think about flying in. i'm not nearly as afraid of this shit as i am driving, but its pretty sketchy. so i ask you NS, has anyone ever flown in one of these before? how did that go?

CLAIM: My good friends uncle owns Purcell construction. Its a commercial contracting business so he makes unfathomable bank. He owns two Cessna's and a helicopter. Cessna's in my opinion are not scary at all. They are super fun to ride in man I wouldnt be too scared.

ive only gone up in a plane that small a long time ago. but its gonna be an adventure. ide hope for nice weather. lol

i've flown in a small cessna a time or two, no problems
worst part is takeoff, after that you know you're gonna land somewhere

Sorry about your buddy.  I would say do it and get over your fear.  I had something like this happen,  no deaths but still.  All you can do it go for it.  Thats all i can say.   Hope it works out for you

Yeah like I'm not scared of the plane, just kinda sketched out because it's so small. I'd love to drive, but I'm just not ready to go that far alone yet.

I wouldn't worry about the Cessna, they're legit and have a super solid design, they've been around for years.

I have been getting my pilots license and small planes are a lot different than a 747, I am actually a lot more afraid of big jets now. Something about not being in control or able to see where I am going. RIP to your friend man that is terrible. You will be fine in the cessna.

Riding in a Cessna isn't scary at all, they're pretty comfortable planes. Riding in a single engine shitbox over open ocean 15,000 feet deep? now THAT'S fucking sketchy.

You realize if you crash in a car you're in a far better spot than a plane?

But I hear you, I've been in and scene some nasty crashes. The clap was in a pretty bad wreck coming home from iceface tired a year or 2 ago.

shits rough. Best of luck getting over everything.




People def should remember to wear there seatbelts when drivers are tired. Or encourage drivers to pull over if they are. Fun trips can turn south real quick. Be safe

I have flown in many small planes including cessnas and eclipse 500s. They were with friends though so I trust them. The only problem with flying in small charter aircraft is the pilots are usually very inexperienced and have nowhere near the same kind of training or hours as an airline pilot. That being said, I still feel much safer flying than driving. You don't have to worry about other idiots flying into you not to mention the amount of training to fly a plane is infinitesimally more than to drive a car.

Meh, most of my family has gotten their Private Pilot Licenses.... Except the women in the family... on both sides.

Cessnas are pretty rad. I've done 1 flying lesson so far and it was in a cessna.


I will tell you this... cause you need to hear the truth.

My dad works for one of three companies that does small aircraft recovery. On average, 2.5 small carriers crash per week. He says its less common with the current economy... but yeah... 2.5 a week.

But considering there are thousands flying everyday... its way safer than driving.

i've been telling myself this too, but i just don't want to do it yet. I realize that this fear is pretty unreasonable and kind of silly, but it's just impossible to push the memories back in my mind.

Don't worry, the main cause is pilot error... and seriously, its a commercial flight. Small plains and commercial flights are usually super rad. If it is only you, or you and a few others and no one asks for the co-pilot seat, you should totally ask. It is a pretty amazing feeling.

I'm serious though, it's pretty damn safe.

Usually the crashes are people who just got their license trying to show off or flying when they shouldn't be or dont have a full grasp of down drafts and screw up landing.... Commercial is pretty solid.

This exactly. You gotta do it eventually. Life is short man, you can't let your buddies death hold you back from driving the rest of your life. Just eat real good before you go or stop somewhere on the way get some good food, a cup of coffee, have an apple on the way there, and listen to some loud music. All that added up and your bound not to sleep.

no i totally realize this. I'm 18 years old and this fear is rather immature. i live more than three hours from any real mountian so i'm not gonna let this fear infringe on my ability to ski, but im also not gonna ski alone so id be driving with people. i'll grow out of it.

Not sketchy at all, Im actually flying to NYC next week. I flew down to florida for spring break, and been to niagra falls. It will be one of the best flights you get to take. You'll actually have a lot of good scenery. Dont freak out just enjoy it, iTS A BLAST.

Look at it this way.  THere is less chance of a terrorist.  At least the way I'm looking at it assuming airport security is the same for small planes. So less people = less chance of terrorists.

My dad is a pilot, we fly Cessna 172's which are two seater planes. It's just fine, they are plenty safe.

i wouldn't be completely thrilled to do it either, but keep in mind it's not like most flying.

In big planes, I hate turbulence, but everytime i've been in a smaller plane, i don't mind it so much, even though it's more noticeable. I don't mind it because of the visibility I have and i can see the pilot still has control, and we aren't going straight down. In a big plane it just seems too unknown. It's just an entirely different experience.

And you'll be flying lower, so you'll most likely see some great scenery. Just throw on some music (make sure its loud, cause the engines will be quite loud) look out the window, and relax.

You'll be ok.

havent ridden in a cessna but a similiar small ass airplane. it was from salt lake city to rouge river oregon. it wasnt bad at all, pretty cool actually. you got nothing to be worried of man, and if you are just take some benadryl and some vodka and you wont even know

cessnas are pretty fun to ride in actually...they fly relatively close to the ground and they do not go that fast either...ull be fine on it...lake placid is sick too ull love it
