Hitchhikers

I pick hitchhikers from time to time, I feel I need to cause I have hitchhiked to get to the hill and some nice people pick you up. Now i have picked up some weird people, I picked up a woman who had slept under a tree on the bottom of a pass in march, but the most weird hitchhiker was picked up when i was 5ish by my mom driving in the mountains, he sat in the bed of the truck and i shit you not had green teeth, like green green teeth. and the strangest dude that picked me up said he was a priest and god told him to write a new bible, he also asked if we knew Reese Witherspoon, cause god told him to ask people. Shit you not scariest hour of my life.

Have any other NSers picked up hitchhikers or have hitchhiked?

Probably one of the stupidest ideas you can have. The chances that a hitchiker have a concealed weapon are astronomical. My grandfather has been mugged from back in the day when it was common courtesty.

I live in a super small town pop. like 3000, 7000 in the county. i am not too worried about it, besides most people are normal, just the occasional weird ones

I was hitchhiking from Steamboat Springs to Breckenridge a few years ago when I got picked up by a drunk driver in a snowstorm. It was such bullshit, I was scared as shit. halfway down the pass the guy took a turn a little too fast, we spun 180 then slammed into a concrete barrier. I got the guy to drop me off at the next town.

I still hitchhike from time to time. It's a great way to get around and you do meet some awesome people, but after that day I'm a little weary since you never know if the people picking you up safe drivers.

I laugh at the people on Loveland Pass hitchhiking while they "backcountry ski". Earn your turns, gapers. haha

my only experience with hitchhikers.

I was in vermont skiing with malcolm and we saw a hitchhiker when we were coming back from skiing. We decided to pick him up because it could be interesting. so we stop the car and the guy comes to our car. the guy was actualy our good friend dan who was hitchhiking so we just picked him up and had a good laugh

My dad used to hitch hike when he was in college. He also picked up hitchhikers. One time, he  was hitch hiking, he opened the door to get in, and the guy who was driving pulls out a revolver, he aims the gun straight at my dad's head and says "If you try to pull anything I won't hesitate to put a shot through that little head of yours. Now get in." My dad was freaking out the whole ride, until he finally gets out and the guy pulls out his gun and says to my dad "If I was you, I'd get one of these. Never know what type of crazies are out here."

My dad's friend, who I call uncle Bill,  used to hitch hike. One time, he was out driving and he saw a hitch hiker, he picks him up, and the guy gets in and pulls out his knife, holds it to my uncle Bills throat and says "You try to fuck me over and I'll cut your throat. I've killed tougher men then you." Fucking crazy. I'd be careful when hitch hiking.

There's a hitchhiker in my town my dad always picks up. He is about 65 years old and hates driving. He wears army uniforms, but he was never in the army. He thinks more people will pick him up if he wears it. He also has a record collection at his house with over 1 million records. One time my dad picked him up about 120 miles from his house.

Sketchy as fuck.

I pick up hitchhikers, but generally only if I'm driving with a friend or if its like a chick or a really little guy. I also keep a knife in my car so you know w/e. The last one I picked up gave me a magic 8 ball. She smelled bad though.

Also I don't care who you are, when you are driving through the middle of the California desert in Little Rock and its like 80 degrees out and there is some dude standing on the side of the road in full ski gear trying to catch a ride up to Mt. High, you stop and pick him up. Every time. And then you feel great when you see him in the parking lot trying to hitch back down the hill with a huge smile on his face.

i dont know where some of you guys live, but that stuff isnt that bad. i live in a 20 mile long valley with about 5000 people or so and you wait like 10-15 minutes at worst until someone picks you up.

i did it occasionally in hs, while waiting for the next bus (~1 h or so), did it 3 weeks ago and am still alive. no big deal. i dont know if i would do it as a small girl or in a car with more than 1-2 persons in it, but if i am in a group (not too big of course, sucks for hitchhiking) its legit as fuck

I've only ever hitchhiked on an island that was pretty small and everyone there is either rich and from the city or a Hippy so not sketch at all.

My uncle hitchhiked across Canada when he was younger and he told me this story about these two french Canadian guys who picked him up. they were driving for a while and then all of a sudden they pull on to this dirt road and start singing "we are the fichermen of men". My uncle pulled out his hatchet and got the fuck out of there.

I've given a couple boarders a ride up the hill before, no problem with that, it's not like they were going to rob me on a pow day.

The one time I picked up an actual hitchhiker it was like 40 deg C out in the summer and I pulled up to an intersection.  This fat guy basically got into my car and asked if I could drive him a couple minutes down the road to the town because his car broke down.  I was going that way so it wasn't really a problem.

My dad picks up this one guy he kind of knows, and that's about it. But I probably wouldn't pick up sketchy looking guys while driving alone in the mountains haha.

my town lies on the appalachian trail so we always have people walking to and from town to the trail(s)  im never that reluctant to pick people up with their packs, they usually have a good story to tell aswell,

i look at it as they are more likely than not more scared to get picked up then i am picking them up,

me and my dad were driving from copper to breck we picked up this guy in a siut the hole ride he was trying to convert us to some weird religion he said he was able to heal any one then when we dropped him of at a gas station of he asked for 20 dollers then we were getting gas and we saw him walking out of the gas station with a beer and a pack of cigarettes

me and two buddies hitchhiked about a mile back to our car after biking with the sketchiest guy. His name was Kyle and he told us his life story. He was a pro snowboarder for 18 years (halfpipe mostly), broke his leg snowboarding, and got addicted to the pain meds and ended up on the streets doing cocaine and heroin. he went to rehab and got better, then broke his shoulder biking and got back on pain meds and back on the streets doing cocaine and heroin again and is back in rehab again. he was still a great guy for going completely out of his way to drive us back to our car.

hitching is very common here in nz. never done it, but my good friend hitched all around the south island for 2 weeks. never had a problem, only made new friends and got some free rides and couches to crash on. I'd hitchhike here in nz before I would ever do it at home in the states.

with that said my friend and I didnt really pick up a hitcher, but we gave a ride to a guy who was going to hitchhike down to town in stowe. we randomly met him on the chairlift, and took a few runs with him, then saw him in the parking lot later and he asked us for a ride so we gave him one. looking back, it could've been dangerous but now he's one of our friends and we ride with him on the reg. that's the closest ive ever gotten to legit picking up a hitch hiker

so me and my friends are under 18 and wanted some cigars to puff on and some to twist one up...we pick up this dude with a backwards boston hat on and a boston jacket on...he gets in the car with his shirt covered in blood and some throwup...he says he is going to the campus gas station so i'm like word. i ask him if he would buy for us and he was down. we get there, give him the money and he goes in the store...he comes back out like, 3 minutes later with his hands in his pockets. jacked like, 10 white owls and just throws em in my car and says " i did this all the time when i was a kid" and just walked off...

One of my friends hitchhiked all the way from Chilliwack to LA at the beginning of this summer. It sounds like he got picked up by some really cool people, including one hippie couple who drove/live in a school bus with a VW bus attached to the roof (about the coolest looking vehicle I have ever seen).

I doubt I would ever pick anyone up who wasn't obviously a skier if I was alone and I wouldn't try hitchhiking myself.

I always hitch-hike, and give rides to those that are thumbin'.

I also live in a town of 10,000 and it's super common to hitch. I used to hitchhike to work. I love it.

i hitch a lot. its free. its a good time. and its better than owning a car in some cases when you dont have a job and such - just surfin around having fun.
you can tell a lot about a state by how long it takes to get a ride and by what kind of people pick you up.

I've hitchhiked quite a few times and I've never had a bad experience.

My first time I got picked up by a dad and his 2 kids. He was showing his kids that hitchhikers aren't dangerous and the kids were inspecting me like I was another species or something.

Every other time I've gotten hippies or bored older guys who just want someone to talk to as they drive across the country. Everyone's been super cool.

I've picked up a few hitchikers too. Mostly hippies but I did pick up this Danish guy who was hitchhiking across North America. He was pretty cool.

Don't be a vagina. Hitchhikers are just normal people who for some reason or another don't have cars.

Thats great to hear! I plan to take some time off after college, and I really want to check out NZ (ive been there before but not on my own) and I would love to just hitch around the south island. Actually thats my dream, I can't wait!

I was kinda high one time and picked up these two crazy hippies. A guy and a girl. Both had university level Physics and Philosophy courses under their belts.

I gave them some food and they payed me in weed "cause they don't believe in moneys artificial value". The guy had dreads down to his ankles and tattoos of Startrek like symbols around his chest and stomach. Woman was just a super hippie.

He told me that he translated peoples dreams into other languages and told them to the forest to learn more about the essence of the world for a living.

They told me all sorts of stories about a greater conscience that held our world in constant balance and was a means for mutual energy exchange. They told me what i need to do and how i need to treat others in order to do my part in balancing our dynamic world.

One of the greatest times of my life and i actually took so much out of it. If i had not been high i would never have done it.

On the cover of the 1969 woodstock album, the couple hugging, one was a hitchhiker. That's how the met, then got married, and have been married since. The couple lives in the town next to me. So marriage from hitchiking.....

I've hitchhiked plenty of times and picked up hitchhikers just as many.

Before I had my lisence I would hitchhike to this secluded hippie/surf town that was 40 minutes from me where a bunch of kids from my high school lived. Never had any problems there.

I've also hitchhiked to the beach and ski resorts on other occasions.

I've picked up people from a girl running in the rain to an old man in a ski resort parking lot trying to get home.



Never had any problems. I've only had positive experiences with it.

I gladly pick up hitchhikers who are wearing ski gear or are carrying a ski or snowboard. Odds are, you make a friend you can ski with for the rest of your life, and you make their day.

Hitching is such a great way to get around, as well as meet people. It's a shame a small minority abuse it.

I'm all for it. I'll always pick up someone if I've got room. I've been picked up by some strange people, but they're always nice.

I have hitch hiked twice before. Both times were up in New Hampshire near Mt Washington where we took a wrong turn while hiking, and ended up 15 miles from our car.

Both times we fine, but it took a while for someone to pick us up.
