Not using poles is just one more way for some skiers to try to become snowboarders, Poles make us different, why change a part of skiing that's always been done(except for little the little kiddies). And I think it just looks awkward as hell without them...just my .02 cents

You started a thread with a discussion, and if anyone disagrees you bash them? Go ahead and ski without poles, but when guys go through the grouse park throwing misty 7s without poles (yeah we have guys that do that), Thier flailing style still looks really shitty. When Andy Marhe skis with poles, his style still looks really sick. Poles really just show that your proud to be a skier, and not trying to emulate other sports.

'poles keep you balanced' BS! if you are holding poles and your poles are in the right position, by default, your hands/arms are in the right position.
'they help you initiate a turn.' again BS. just an extension of your arm. you can point if you want, but you dont need the poles to do it.
poles do give you something to get across flat land, but there is nothing wrong with skating.

Yes Poles are good, they tell you North From South, ski poles are also good for telling people direction you're going, and also to time you turns, not to mention help come off of umps, and implae the random snowboarder...

im not really for the no pole thing but if someone really wants to rock without them then thats ok. I saw that jib thing with andy mahre on it and it was pretty sick, not so much my cup of tea but he made it look pretty stylie. Poles keep your arms from flailing madly, and they DO give you balance. Why do you think tightroe walkers use those big sticks? Poles serve the same purpose on rails.
As for turning, if I ski without poles I really have to struggle to stay forward, and I get backseat realy easily.

this thread is not useless at all. Poles are useless in the park its that simple. I mean shit on rails its not to hard to make no poles look smooth and stylee but once you keep gettin to bigger and bigger shit I mean thats when poles help out a lot.....but it still would sick to see a lot people throwin down smooth without poles it would open up a totally new style of skiing in the park. I rocked no poles a couple years ago and got bitched at like craaazy but it was fun I mean its just something like twin skiing was 6-7 years ago. Open up ur minds-if you dont wana rock poles fuck it you dont hav to no one is forcing you too, just like saying you dont hav to hav t-hall's steez. Its all your choice but I think you at least try for a day and see what u think.

3 or 4 years ago I did it with no poles too, but that was before I even knew about twin tips or that anyone else was doing this kind of skiing. As soon as I went back to poles I felt so much better. Skiing is a sport with poles. There is no doubt about it. Skiing without poles is not skiing. It's like hockey without skates, thats called road hockey; still fun, but not the real thing.

Poles help more than just timing, they keep your stance forward (if used correctly) and cut out a lot of upper body rotation (if used correctly). I ski a lot better with poles than without, therefore I use them.
