Bill maher needs to grow up

So if you havent seen bill mahers documentary called "religulous" basically bill maher makes fun fo peoples religions for an hour and a half straight.

I feel like Bill Maher is kind of mean to be so intolerant of peoples beliefs and make so much fun of them.

Personally I dont really believe in anything, but that doesnt mean im going to try and humiliate people for believing what they want to believe in.

I feel like bill maher wants to be the guy who tells children there is no santa clause. But if it doesnt harm anybody, i dont see what the problem is letting people believe santa clause is real for their whole lives. Like seriously who gives a shit.

i havent seen the show, blablabla, but i think its good. the standard should be "atheist" and not the exception.

personally, i think its funny how "religious" people get defended everywhere, so as they would only consist of 5 year old children.

religion has some good things, just to have it said.

I think he brings up great points, but presents them in a somewhat immature manner. But remember, he IS A COMEDIAN. It is not his job to be politically correct, to sugar coat things, to be civil, nor to represent his argument in any other way than that of his choosing. Stop taking him so seriously.

great point, very original btw.

it bothers me that the gold standard is "religious". hardcore believers of any religion bother me generally. or people who disregard scientific evidence because a book written thousands of years ago tells them to do so.

furthermore, it bothers me how organized christianity fucks up everything. primarily catholics, but its the main confession where i live, so its legit.

as i said, i have no problem with people who believe something and/or want to hold on to something in times of trouble, who respect science and read the bible as what it is: a collection of books written by humans.


and arabian has a point about how he is a comedian. either you like it or dont. noone points a gun to your head and forces you to watch it.

and please dont delete this shit. i know its been through a few times, but the cast changes everytime these threads come up. in other words, i never discussed religion with "coolstory" and i hope this forum gives me a medium for it.

He brings up some good points in that movie, I thought it was a alright watch. He's brought up some good points on other things like his pharmy rant.

But he is def an asshole, and has said some real shitty stuff before.

He already threw a "as long as it doesn't harm anyone" clause in the OP. I'm sure he would be fine with you having your own beliefs, acting on them is a different story.

what i don't get is that people watch south park and family guy and think it's hilarious, but when Bill Maher makes fun of religion he "takes it to far". jesus, it's freedom of speech, and you don't have to watch. you're not exactly his target audiance anyways.

I think you are taking his shit too seriously, how come you are not up in arms about family guy and south park and practically every single stand up comedian out there. Comedians make fun of people, things and ideas in a funny way, thats what they do. Quit whining about it.

This movie came out a long time ago, there was a thread on this very movie the other day, and I would say there is at least 1 religious thread each day on NS.

That being said religion is fucking retarded and the only reason people take offense to someone pointing out the obvious inaccuracies, complete lack of logic, and total lack of scientific data is because they have been told this dog shit since they were a little kid and believing that their parents were full of it it too much to bare.

I know organized religion is bull shit, you know it is bull shit, so can we please just all agree that no one knows how the universe started or what happens when you die and get on with building our society and maybe one day we can answer these questions instead of saying some dude did it a long time ago and left zero evidence and has not come back since.

Or you can keep believing in religion and crash planes into sky scrapers while you are molesting little boys.

Also Bill Maher, although usually uninformed, is funny and has the balls to point out how fucking stupid religion is. So maybe you should grow up OP.

How about Christians and Muslims. Basically they are the same religion. It would be like saying "Ya there is a buffet in heaven, and there is a shit load of cake." Then another guy is like "I agree about the buffet but there are cookies you heretic son of a bitch." A couple thousand years later they are killing each other.

Also just to clarify I am ok with you believing in "something". As soon as you start to define your beliefs based on a book that was written 1500 years ago that has been proven over and over again to be bull shit. Well my friend, then I reserve the right to call you a brain dead retard.

his point is that people are still being killed over religion....... crimes still happen in the name of religion, wars still occur and genocides are carried out for religous beleifs.

so i guess as long as religious people keep doing stupid shit in the name of their religion then there probably will be people like bill maher who make fun of them

I'm pretty religious, but that doesn't mean I dont make fun of my own religion and others.  There are some ridiculious things about all religions, even if ideas are prestnted immaturely, that doesn't mean you can laugh at them.  People need to take less offense and realize that things many people believe are ridiculious.

There are also many people who have helped others in hte name of religion. 
This past summer I went on a trip to Las Vegas with my ecumenical youth group.  There were some amazing people that I met there.  One guys name was Isaac, he managed the largest Food Bank in Nevada called 3-square.  They take in tons and tons of food and distribute it to smaller foodbanks for them to distribute it.  He used to be rich, he told me he had 3 cars, but he realized that he wasn't living how he should be, he wasn't helping people, he told me about how he found god then decided to start working for food banks, he now gives thousands of kids 3 meals a day for 1 dollar. 

Another person I met was named John.  He was a alcoholic that lost his job due to drinking, he then lost his house and his wife, he was living on the street.  He was trying to go to a soup pantry to get some food but he accidently called the wrong number, this led him to the Las Vegas rescue mission, where he was able to overcome his addiction to alcohol.  God wasn't important to his story for a while, but eventually he came to believe in god and has since then dedicated his life to God.  He is now currently serving a year long humanitarian mission in Africa, he saved all his money for a year, to go help people.

One of the other people I met was a lady named Miss Mary.  She had inherited a large sum of money (not sure what from) but she refused to spend it saying "Its the lords money."  So three times a week she would drive her old beaten up car that was on its last legs, with a broken AC unit to the Las Vegas rescue mission, where she would feed homeless people using her own money.  She would feed these homeless people a feast of delicious food, which she made herself.  She doesnt ask people for donations, or help making the food, just help serving out the food.  3 times a week, she would serve more then 100 homeless people a meal that was home made and very good.

You cant tell me that people dont help others in the name of god.

Never said that at all. I said that I don't care if you believe in something. All those stories are of human compassion, why do humans have to attribute their compassion to Jesus or god.

If you want to help people and say that your inspiration is the bible I am fine with that. As soon as you take away the rights of others, molest children, charge a fee to get into heaven, build giant churches based on book of a guy who was homeless and poor, tell people what is right and wrong, live in a castle guarded by the Swiss guard, crash planes into buildings, take anything written in a 1.5k year old book as fact, oppress women, have sex through a hole in a sheet, believe in magic underwear, claim to know what happens when you die, etc. Then we have a problem.

Why do you need an excuse to help people? Its like the only reason you are helping them is because you are selfish and want to get into heaven. Why can't you just help them to help them?

In conclusion, we are all atheists with 99.9999% of the gods that humans have ever believed in, I just took it one god further.

Yeah, I also feel that what you said is super super ridiculious.  But you cant say that all religions do that, many religions are very open to new ideas and are moving forward in the world.  And some people learn compassion through their religion, but I certanly dont help people to try to get into heaven adn I dont think that many people do. I personally feel everyone goes to heaven, regardless of anything they have ever done.  And its the most convinent outlet to attribute something to helping others.

Religion is not flexible or open to new ideas, that is the whole idea of religion. You take it at face value. That is why the catholic church cant change any rule it has ever created, because it is the word of god and not subject to change. Religion is rigid and unchanging, requiring blind faith.

You can not tell me that every religion is unchanging, never progressing, never adapting.  The episcopal church (which I am and which I know was founded on ridiculious circumstances branching off of the church of england)  is so progressive.  We have openly gay bishops, and we allow people to believe what they want.  Last year, my priest signed a letter saying you can believe in the theory of evolution and  still be a christian.  Religion does not have to be rigid and unchanging as you said, it can flexible adn just allow an outlet for people to come together and worship.  And all faith is blind, and thats why its called faith, and I also feel god can change, although god is all powerful, his conception of how to use his power changes (explains change from old testiment acts of wrath to new testement acts of kindness)  Dont try to force every religion into a single category, you certanly dont know all of them.

Sorry for the dub post, but I also half agree with what you said.  I feel that people should always have compassion, regardless of what htey believe, but some people only learn compassion after they "found god"  Isn't genuine compassion, so helping other people because they need help, a good thing?  If you figured out that others need help to, because thats what jesus preached a good thing? Regardless of if you were a heartless bastard and started to have compassion, or if you helped others for your entire life, genuine compassion is good.  and the only way some people learn it is through god.

My problem with religion is that you spend your entire life helping out those in need, donating to good causes, and being a good, honest person, but not pay money to a church that doesn't abolish child molesting. and they say you will end up in hell....And to the Muslims... do you really think god looks down at you blowing the fuck out of good Muslims, and says, "good job, heres 42 virgins" Lets not forget the crusaders killing all the innocent Muslims, too.. you wonder why they are so pissed off. You kill doctors who try to help out stupid fucking girls who got pregnant. You are ignorant. I consider myself a good person. I help out at a local food kitchen, and give money to the Jimmy Fund. But just because I don't go into a large place with people in pastel sweaters who are there to feel better about themselves, not actually what the church believes in; and im damned to hell.............
