So I was at my moms house yesterday and she asked me what I was going to do now that I graduated. I told her first thing I want to do is move out west near a mountain find a job then go to college. Now I never stop talking to my mom about skiing and it gets on her nerves. So she asked me "Why do you want to be a pro skier so bad?" and here is how the conversation went.

Mom- "Why do you want to be a pro skier so bad?"

Me- "I never said I wanted to be a pro skier."

Mom- "Im sure you have its the only thing you talk about."

Me- "Well I do want to be pro but I don't care if it doesnt happen. I would just like to move out west live an every day life and just be able to have some of the best skiing a short drive from where I live. The only reason why I want to be pro is so that I can just ski more, so I could have the oppurtunity to go all over the world doing what I love."

Mom- "Ok that makes more sence. I thought you just wanted to be some ski bum the rest of your life."

Me- "If im at the rite mountain I would be A Ok with that!"

She just glared at me all pissed off and i walked away.

.....So I wanted to know why some of you guys if any of you guys want to be pro skier.

You guys only see the bright side of being a pro. They have to keep their sponsors happy, by winning comps, or having rediculous segments. That in itself can be super stressful, and add travelling all over the globe and group dynamics and it gets really tough. At that point I would feel like skiing is more of a job than what I love, so no, i don't really want to be pro.

i wanna be a pro so i can ski more/ in more places (plus i would feel cool) but honestly this year i moved to whis and did exactly what u described and it was unreeaal. skiing every day at one of the best resorts in the world.. theres nothing better

if you become a pro you get to do what you love doing + get paid for it...

I'd be glad to become sponsored/paid for what i do now, but i wouldn't want my life to revolve around my sponsorship...

that's why i'm currently working on becoming a ski-instructor/dive instructor/mountain guide....

that way i can do the things i love doing, get paid for it, remain free in what i do, when i do it and i get a chance to let other people share in my passion...

If you asked me a year, maybe even two years ago, I would have had a long list of reasons. But once I realized that I could not be a pro and I was/am nowhere near becoming pro now. I stopped giving a shit about being a pro skier.

Well.

I live in Breckenridge across the street from the gondola. I ski 6 days a week from open until close day. I ride year round. I get to ride where I want, and wear what I want. And I'm not a pro. Buttt, I have a ton of connections in the industry and I'm starting my own outerwear company. I'm not an "average joe"... BUT...

A lot of my friends ARE pro.
They always have to travel and sometimes it gets to be exhausting for them. They get to ski a lot less than I do because of all their traveling. They're constantly complaining about their team managers and how they can never wear what they want in photo shoots. And a lot of time they're stressed about keeping up to par with their peers. AND sometimes they just want a little privacy.

So no, I would never want to be a pro.

So you love skiing? But you would rather work somewhere else? Any job gives you stress. By having to have certain shit done by a certain time to keep your boss happy. Then ski maybe on the weekends? To me if I had the ability to win comps and make rediculous segments I would much rather stress over that then any other job in the world. If skiing was my job weather its being a Rep, a Scout, Filmer, Editor, or Pro Skier that would be the best thing that could ever hapen. When the stress over whelms you, you just have to stop and ask yourself how many fucking people would want to be in your shoes living your life.

You would need to move out West and get involved in the skiing industry to understand.

I stayed at Ashley Battersby's house a few months ago for a girls comp (I'm a chick in disguise). The first day of practice it was dumping so we decided to skip practice and go ski pow. She was stoked and said "Wow, I don't remember the last time I just went and skied."

They are blessed with talent and it's true they get to travel and sign autographs and get free stuff. But it's definitely not for everyone. They have A TON of stress, maybe more so than others. (DEFINITELY way more than me).

But I also get to travel and get free stuff... and I ALSO get to ski way more.

Would I ever want to be an average joeshmoe again? NO. Do I love being in the industry? YES. Would I ever want to be a pro. NEVER.

Thats is what I am planning to do when I move out west. Plane Tours, mountain bike tours, and mybe hiking tours during the summer Ski Insturctor in the winter. My mom asked me why I wanted to be a pro skier and I never thought of it. But if that was an oppurtinity I had I would deffinitly take it.
