I think there is still enough of a market for an ipod, as no one i know uses their phone for music and phone calls. Everyone has a stand alone ipod.

honestly, you're arguments don't make any sense... you don't even compare the iPhone 4 to the "norm of smartphones." you compare the iphones individual technologies to many different phones or other things that just do that one thing.

k so lets go through your shitty argument....


1. 720P Video in a phone is nothing special, but only a few other phones have it and none of them compare to the iphone

2. imovie is editiing software, true... but we're not talking about movie editing software on a computer, we're talking about movie editing software on a phone.

3. while a gyroscope may seem unnecessary, I'm sure many apps will utilize it and no other phone has it. It's a first for a mobile phone. Does a wii make phone calls? no... comparing the wii to a phone is dumb.

4. 5 mp camera on the iphone is the same situation as the 720p video... it's nothing special, but it keeps the iphone up to date. to give the iphone an 8mp camera would be dumb on so many levels too. it doesn't have the proper lens to utilize 8mp and the pictures would take up too much space (i feel the same way about 720p, i think it's unnecessary)

5. that super screen.... they did something cool and new and "innovative" and you can't just leave it at that. I don't know about you, but i don't generally spend hours staring at my phone, let alone enough time to give myself a headache...

6/7.... folders and multitasking... other smart phones have done it, but apple's iphone will do it better and more easily and it will be more user-friendly. So what if your old, shitty windows smartphone can multitask, it can't do any of the other stuff an iphone can do and probably looks like shit too and has a poor OS.


haven't you noticed that this is what apple does? they take current technology and make it better. they take an established platform and make it more user-friendly. My point, the ipod. MP3 players had been around for a while, had some buzz, but CDs were still more popular. iPod comes out and it completely changes the way we look at mp3 players. iPhone comes out and completely changes the whole smartphone game. The iPhone 4 will still be the best phone on the market....

I think we will begin to see it fade in the next few years though. Both due to cell phones, and another revolution in the way we "carry" our music. I think it may move towards streaming music and simply buying rights to either a few songs or possibly paying a monthly fee to access any song. Although I think there would be some complications with specific remixes and stuff people want to hear, I think the vast majority of people are not listening to obscure Biggie mash-ups on their iPods. Maybe some sort of hybrid between though two? We'll see I guess.

And for the thread, the new iphone looks sick. I am a little bummed on the screen size and only 5.0mp camera though, especially with the EVO just coming out and having a 8.0mp camera, a larger 720p screen and WiMAX.

i wanted to quit posting in this thread... but i will try my best to argue my point.

ok so as i made that post, i had a couple phones in mind. they are still "recent".
i admit, i am a google fanboy. i love google and i think they have everything going for them. android in my eyes is great and i will be buying a desire in july. anyways...

phones like the incredible, milestone/droid, desire, legend, etc... can all compete against the iphone.
but
i look at the evo 4g and imo and many others, it pwns the iphone 4. it has a larger screen which some like, others hate, and then it has better everything except for resolution. either way, 800x480 is still comparable to 960by640 or whatever the iphone has. the evo has a 1.3mp front cam, compared to the vga cam of the iphone.

4.3inch evo vs 3.5inch iphone is based on opinion.

when it comes to battery life, it's a tough one. the evo 4g already has a reputation for horrible battery life. yet, i've found several people who have got 62 hours out of it using it often. a few things to tweak and bam, you're set.

the evo uses qik or fring or any other service, which is free or a small fee for premium. note that the evo video calling works on 3g and 4g, along with wifi. apple's facetime only works on wifi, and only from iphone 4 to iphone 4.

the evo has a neat kickstand to facilitate watching movies, and it has a hdmi port.

does a phone need 6-axes of rotation? a stock android phone can rotate from portrait>landscape>upside-down portrait>reverselandscape and then back again. full 360 degrees of rotation and that's stock. i don't see the need to have 6 axes of rotation but maybe that's just me. for most, i think an accelerometer would suffice...

when it comes to processors, i cant judge. the a4 runs the ipad so i know it's a great chip, but the 1ghz snapdragon also holds it own. android os takes less resources to run than ios.

the evo supports flash, while the iphone doesn't and never will.

lastly, the evo also captures 720p video and has an 8mp cam with dual led flash. yes apple has tricks up its sleeve but i think the evo cam has an edge over it; we'll have to wait and see.

lastly, android owns the previous ios. i dont think the multitasking and folders option will take away androids power. it really is unique. even if you jailbreak the iphone, there are many things you can't do. customization is a joke on the iphone. android is the most customizable os out there. you can honestly change ANYTHING, and that's before it's rooted. root the badboy and you can do even more.

i tried to be reasonable here, and relatively just. believe me, i can afford an iphone but would not waste money on one. my carrier does carry it.

Problems i've heard about the Evo are that it has horrible battery life, and that despite the amazing screen, the device is just too big and clunky...

About 4 weeks ago I used it pretty heavily for a day and the thing definatley felt awesome. Build quality was impeccable and with the 1ghz snapdragon processor, the thing ran exceptionally smooth. The one qualm I did have with it, was the battery life will only be about one full day if you do not shut down your apps. If you leave like 10 of them running all day, it will reduce battery substantially. Little features about it also made it great, things as simple as the kickstand, not only for view videos on a table, but also for standing it up and using it as an alarm clock on your night stand at night. In 4g range too (pretty much everywhere in Seattle), the browsing speed is blazing fast and using the WiMAX with a couple computers, it worked very well also. I must say that it truly exceeded my expectations.

but still no flash, im getting a  sony xperia x10, when my contract runs out, my iphone has given me nothing but shit since i bought it, it had 7 hardware crashes in a year, 6 which were warrenteed, the 7thi needed to buy a new phone. get off steve jobs dick

look at the market though, the ipod has more then 75% of the market in term of mp3 players, the iphone has a 28% market share of smart phones, beat only by the BB. I dont know about you, but the only people i know who listen to music on their phones have an iphone, or a BB, I can't even name a single person who listens to music on a feature phone, they all have ipods. people like having 2 different devices, until phones start having 120 gigs of internal storage, and a very easy and simple media client on a computer, the ipod will always dominate. there is a reason why the ipod has sold more then 110 million units.

It is good that they are making upgrades, but I am still happier with my Palm Pixi Plus. First of all, it is on Verizon so I can get 3G everywhere. I also really prefer the physical keyboard. I have multitasking, and a great internet browser. The resolution and touch screen are awesome, and the menus and gestures are extremely intuitive and easy to use. I also have a great music player and have since sold my iPod Touch. I just have my phone, and an iPod Shuffle for active music.

When the iPhone first came out I agreed that it was probably the dominator of the phone market. Their touch screen and features really trumped everything else. But, today, other companies have caught up and the iPhone is just another option on a level playing field. Nothing bad about it at all, but nothing that makes it stand out either. If someone offered me to trade my Pixi for one of these, I would nicely turn them down. It is just a personal preference now, rather than "the best."

android is great, but it's main flaw is the iPhones success. Android is a shitshow of multiple phones and platforms. It's a different experience on every phone, some good some bad, all have a sub-par user experience. The iPhone on the other hand, no matter how "bad" it is compared to the superbadass android superphones, is always a slick experience. Theres a reason my non tech saavy mom bought an iPhone; it works. You can't make the arguement that Android is just as easy to use as iOS, because it's impossible. The iPhone is just one phone with one OS, and that's what makes it be able to be so much better then android. And people say iPhones are for losers and people who know tech use android, just like the pc vs mac arguement. That's also stupid. I consider myself rather good with technology and I would way rather have a phone that's interface is natural and simple, where I know that it will be as fast everyday as the day I bought it. The need for a 3rd party task manager on a phone sums up my opinion on android, it's windows on a phone (I know froyo has a task manager, but still, fuck task managers...)
The iPhone will always be the best phone, no matter how "powerful" android phones get...
and snowcase, stop being a bitch, most people who convert from iPods are going to iPhones

Completely wrong. I use my phone daily. Hook it up to bluetooth, my car stereo or use the integrated speaker. Never did that with an ipod, with an iphone you can, further proving that ipods are dying.

have you ever used an android handset? it is pretty similar to an iphone....

you have a phone icon, and all your apps. i'd argue android os is easier to use than ios. and if you find it confusing, then customize it as you like.

just wait and see. froyo is just the beginning of google dominance. you need to keep in mind that apple has been in the game for 3 years now. android is only a year and half old. most of the important itunes apps are on android and are even free. android will continue to catch up to apple and even beat it soon. just wait and see.

advanced task killer (android) does not come stock because it's only needed for lame android phones. get a nexus one that has enough power and you're fine. all of you defending apple are just caught up in their marketing scheme. and snowcase is bringing up good points, so don't hate.

it does have flash haha LED flash. shitty about your current one causing you problems, I've only had one problem with an iPhone ever since the 3G came out, it bricked but it was under warranty so it was all good.

I always get sucked into buying the new iPhones, apple sure knows how to do that well, but I love mine so it's well worth it for me I can use it for so many things. I'm hoping to upgrade my contract to get the new one when it comes out, or sometime in the summer when I can make some money. it just looks like it has developed so much more and finally may be able to settle with this one for a while if I get it since it finally has flash, and all those other features that look much better than previous models

can't tell if you're joking, but the iphone 4 is letting you do so many more things you can do on the 3g, therefore becoming more of a computer. people won't have to go to their computers anymore to video chat, make a quick video, etc. for example people who travel a lot for business might only need an iPhone 4 on quick trips as opposed to bringing a computer

This might be somewhere else in the tread but are there any plans to expand to another network? I feel like AT&T has done an ok job in that in comparison to phones I have used on other networks the 3g service with Att is much faster. It is hot garbage during peak hours. The phone is fucking worthless during professional sports or other big events.

Also I was in Montana and I got a 800 dollar phone bill because they said I was connected to a Canadian tower. I was in Billings so I don't see how that happened. That cost me 2 hours on the phone. You would think ATT would be happy to spread the Iphone around there network is so overworked.

Also what is the deal with getting the new Iphone? I got mine in April of last year, do I need to wait a full 2 years to get the deal on the new phone? Should I wait to see if Verizon is going to carry it? Won't there just be a new Iphone next June? The Iphone 4S or some shit? Are there any other smart phones on the market that can dethrone the Iphone?

I think it's fucking stupid how Apple takes something that has been around for probably over five years, slaps it in the iPhone, and then markets it as new and revolutionary. Videocalls have been around for years. It has even been running on regular 3G Networks and has worked just fine. Now Jobs is acting like they just invented the whole thing about videocalling. It was the same when the 3Gs got video capability. There were fucking TV Commercials about a phone that could record video in fucking 2009, when video recording on phones have been around since probably around 2000.
But however, if there is one company who will be able to get people to use the Videocall, it is Apple. They will hype it into the sky, and all the hipsters and fanboys will just have to use it.

But apart from that, the phone looks mighty fine. The screen looks super amazing, and i would love a 720p cam on my phone.(HTC Hero)

I'm not pissed off at all. I was simply acknowledging the fact that the only argument most people make on here is that "Apple is for hipsters", in which there is no validity to that statement, nor does it make any sense. And do you think any company has any personal attachment with the people who buy their products? No. As long as they are making millions of dollars, they don't give a shit. It's not only like that with Apple, but with anything. I don't see Microsoft calling me up to see how my desktop that still runs Windows XP from 5 years ago is doing.

And when you do decide to switch from your iphone, lemme know. hah

720p video on a phone. Great until you realise the sensor's fucking tiny and all your vids are going to looking like a noisy PoS. There's a reason why proper SLR's and video cams use bigger sensors. It's just a shame apple fankids don't realise it. To reiterate. Pixels don't mean dick. Sensor size is what matters, which is why my shitty old 6MP DSLR is still better than your brand new 12MP compact camera. I've always thought of Apple product launches as a bunch of guys daisy chaining over an object. If anyone cares to illustrate that particular analogy, that'd be great.

You are correct, only Wi-Fi so far, but jobs said that they were going to get it on the 3G Network sooner or later. They just need to sort out some carrier issues.(Probably like you said, shitty AT&T). But i do indeed agree with you. When they get it onto 3 or 4G, then it really has the potential to really take off, just because everyone has the device for it. I Dont see it being useful for just regular calling though. It's probably nice if you are like you said, at a concert or sporting event. Probably if you have kids chillin at home and you want to talk to them as well. Heck, i'd be all over it then.

Also, HTML5 is great and all, but most browsers don't implement it properly yet, and you can be sure as hell that mobile browsers don't.

Plus, why the fuck does Apple make such a big deal about Flash when Android's able to run it fine?

And iOS, yeah, good luck getting that one. Cisco's had that trademarked for years.
