The first distinct memory I have of being in awe of a skier was of Arne Backstrom when I was about 10 years old at Crystal. He must have been about 16 or 17 and was poaching the "snowboard halfpipe". The dude was airing a solid 6 feet out of the 12 foot pipe, grabbing his skis, and doing "up-pipe turns" (alley oops), neither of which I had any idea could be done at the time.

That day changed skiing for me. It's the reason I decided not to switch to snowboarding.

I'm shocked. I felt like he was about to make it big after watching him win the FWT stop in Revelstoke, that's really sad. RIP.

R.I.P. Arne Backstrom.


Powder is deeply saddened to report the death of professional freeskier Arne Backstrom. Backstrom, the 2010 McConkey Cup winner as the overall Freeskiing World Tour Champion passed away in a tragic skiing accident in the remote Cordillera Blanca region of Peru. Backstrom, a Seattle native who had been living in Squaw Valley was skiing with his friends and fellow Squaw locals “American Dave” Rosenbarger and Kip Garre at the time of his death. He was 29.
Arne is the brother of Matchstick Productions athlete Ingrid Backstrom, and in recent years had begun to establish his own mark in the ski world. Arne, a relative newcomer to the competitive freeski circuit in 2009-10, was also gaining a reputation—in Chamonix of all places—as a tremendously gifted ski alpinist. Aside from his competition results, he was best known for completing technical ski mountaineering descents with strong, fluid style. Arne’s younger brother, Ralph, also resides in Squaw Valley and is an accomplished snowboarder. His parents both still reside in the greater Seattle area.
Our best wishes and prayers go out to the Backstrom family and the Squaw Valley community.

Thoughts and prayers go out to Ingrid, Ralph, and the rest of the Backstrom family. It's been a rough past 2 years at Squaw, I pray the next few go better. We lost another inspiration, role model, and possibly the most underrated skier in the world. RIP ARNE, you will be missed at Squaw, and everywhere else.

i hate being reminded how dangerous this sport is. i love to ski, and i know it is dangerous, and so do we all. we all know we could be injured or die, but it just feels wrong when it goes bad. RIP

absolutely. especially when its someone so on top of everything they do. i know i've had close calls of my own that could have been pretty bad.... but someone like arne was just so in control of his game i just don't even imagine tragedy.
