do people spend 10 plus grand on a vehicle when you can easily get a 15-20 year old vehicle for a fraction of the cost and there almost equally reliable?

let everyone do what they want, the last thing someone wants is another individual telling them how to live their lives. Families or people might invest more money into a more reliable car that has been upgraded and has special benefits that have been improved because of consumer ratings.

you asked why people spend 10 grand or more on a car when they can get a 15-20 year older one that is equally reliable. In some ways, the cars might not be as reliable as you think compared to a new one.

it's called value. and the american dream too...buying a newer, more reliable car could save you more in the long run with better gas mileage (not spending as much on gas) and more value down the road when you want to sell it. also, if people have money, and fair amounts of it, they'll spend it like mad men. wouldn't u buy a 30,000 dollar car if u had a fat pocket, or a 8,000 car?

has it ever occurred to you that some people actually really enjoy driving? i know i would like my cars to perform how i want them too and a 20 year old car that doesnt cost very much sure as hell isnt going to do what i want it too.

also..

with even the slightest bit of mechanical knowledge, theres practically no reason why you cant squeeze almost 400k out of any old vehicle. (obviously you cant do that with a vehicle thats already been spent or used and abused severely)
and in the end, you could pay 10,000$ for something that will break down eventually and probably wont be a simple few bolts replacing a part
or you could spend 1000 or heck if you're a big spender even 2000$ on something that will break down too and isnt 60% computer.

and im more then gratefull for my situation, i got a good trade that allows me to be relatively free with my money, i live on the west coast of bc in a small town, i wasnt cursed with a hideous form or born in somalia, whats there to be ungrateful for?

because they're better, you could make a case for buying a used golf or something instead of a new accent. but a 26 year old van is not better than a new car just because it's equally reliable.

i wasnt saying my van was a better buy then a new car,

if you were too add up the mainetance on a brand new vehicle for 200k down the road
and buy an inexpensive vehicle 20 years old, and drive it for as long as possible and add up the maintenance for that short of replacing the power train..

doesnt seem so bad.

i guess thats goes hand in hand with the bit of always buying new(you know, carbon foot prints yadyada i always need a new car so ill keep companies making new cars so i can satisfy my own wants ) but thats a whole different thread.

Because, as someone mentioned, some people actually enjoy driving. You must be one of those fuckers going 10 under to 'conserve' your automobile. Fuck that, learn about apex's and shifting points and 'parabolic' braking, smooth driving will keep ANY car running well for a long time. When you buy a used car, regardless of the repair portfolio, you have no idea if the person before you actually knew how to drive. There may be unforeseen wear on crucial parts of the car that you wouldn't have a clue about. That being said, I have put very strenuous miles on the '05 civic ex i learned to drive in, but you wouldn't know that from a fucking carfax. My driving has since improved, but I know that my engine will not go to the 3-400k that you quoted because I used to take my turns all wrong and rev the engine at undesirable times. (still guilty of the latter, I am an angsty 18 year old male after all). They make the lanes wider than the cars for a reason, ya dig? I am not saying that your thesis is not correct; you will save money if you buy an older car and keep it in good repair, but it is apparent that you are not a very outgoing driver, and most likely not a very outgoing skiier. You must consider the viewpoints of others before you go posting on NSG, unless, of course, you intended to spark the ever-present river of gasoline. I'll leave you with one word: Parabolas. They're fucking beautiful.

i'm would call myself interested in cars and how they work and how they drive, not so much how they preform but that's a bonus, i like a smooth ride that can get me places (i drive a camper van).
 i was taught to drive by my old man, he's an ex bus driver for brewster, so i like to think i was taught well, i know how to drive in muck and other off roady stuff and i used to drive a big cube van for work so i like to think it made me a conscious and a more aware driver. I am a conservative driver but that doesn't mean i drive like an old man, that means i drive with everything in mind keeping my revs in an optimal range and staying within the speed limit in 90% of places, proper use of a manual and braking yadda yadda. after all you are driving a 2 ton killing machine.

as for the bit of 'buyer beware' i guess, you're right, you cant always tell if the difs about to blow or your trannies just a jumble of gears floppin around, but you can make a damn good educated guess. but thats part of the risk buying used, imo the risks of buying used dont outweigh the benefits.

why do all these 22 year olds feel the need to show themselves off in their suburban, jacked up ford that never sees dirt, or  their bottom line beamer with tinted windows and stupid rims, or fuck, even mom with  a new car to take the kids 3 blocks to school? (safety isnt a real reason for that last one anything in the last decade is gunna save you just as well as something fresh off the assembly line)

i bet your 3 inch penis has really nice fog lights. And no, it's stock, i might throw a cold air intake in for the small boost and economical gains. I am going to college, and would never put money into a car unless i could make it actually look good.....did you miss that it's a civic? That would be kind of cliche, don't you think? I'm also considering 1/4 inch spacers to lower my center of gravity a bit, it likes to tip before it slips on dry pavement. Sorry for the personal attack if you actually are small, but i do not respond well to ignorance.
