Goodbye "The Kid"

I grew up watching you, and you were and still are an idol to me. A true class act in a sport that has been corrupted by drugs and scandal. Ken Griffey Jr., Keep your head high. You have led a stand up career that any man should feel great to hang his hat on. You were a role model to the kids of Seattle, and an inspiration to the city. It is sad to see you leave, but the time is right. I am thankful that you were able to return to Seattle and retire as a Mariner. No matter how old you get, you will always be "The Kid". Griffey in 2012(had a bunch of the Griffey 96' stickers and pins)!

Seattle thanks you Junior, and the Safe will always be remembered as the house that Griffey built!

Yeah, sad day in baseball for sure. If it wasn't for all the injuries he probably could have come close to surpassing Hank Aaron.

He will go in with the other Mariner greats like Edgar, Buhner, Ichiro (fucker is already in), Dan Wilson, and the Big Unit as well as Moyer.

My favorite player ever. It was his time though but still he had a great career. Kudos the Griffey, my man.

bah! you beat me to the creation of this thread. sad way to end a great career, but it was time. really wish he just retired last season. could've been a (almost) picture perfect ending to one of the purest baseball careers

Haha sorry Sean. That probably would've been best, but Seattle wanted more and he tried to deliver. Probably better now than dragging him throughout the whole season. Although if we do pull some 95 miracle, it would be sad to see that happen without him.

Oh god no that would be devastating, Junior has Princess Diana like status here in Seattle. He just retired. Still sad to see him leave baseball though.

Seattle is where he grew into superstardom isn't it? I don't view it as Seattle giving so much to him as He gave so much to Seattle. Yeah we greatly appreciate him and respect him. Is there anything wrong with that?

Nothing is wrong with that, its the fact that there has not been one post about his amazing career here in Cincinnati other than mine. This is where it all started for him, played ball for Moller and hit his 500th here.

His career however started in Seattle and him and his dad had the back to back solo home runs together here in Seattle. He may have hit his 500th in Cinci but a lot of them came in Seattle before he got to Cinci.

it didnt all start for him in cincinnati, he played 10 years in seattle before he went to cinci.

JR is and always will be my favorite player. I grew up watching him and imitating him on the field. If it weren't for his injuries he would with out a doubt have been the greatest player we have seen. Here's to you Kid, can't wait to see you in the Hall of Fame.

When I used to play I tried to emulate Edgar's swing. I could never understand how Jr. could get the power he did all knotted up like he was.

Probably because the people posting here grew up watching him in Seattle. Jamie Moyer is also one of my favorite M's, but I don't talk about his career in Philly. Yes he was a Red and I am sure a fan favorite in Cincy as well, but in my eyes I will always see him as a Mariner.

Absolutely a sad day. Griffey will always be my second favorite player ever. (Sorry, Kirby is still my #1). I had the Griffey baseball cleats as a kid and copied his stance and swing. He still has the most iconic follow-through in all of baseball. He will be a first ballot hall of fame, and will forever be known as one of the classiest players in all of MLB.

He did far, far more in Seattle than he ever did in Cincinnati. 10 straight gold gloves, multiple all star games, home runs, etc. His Cincinnati career was plagued with injuries. Sure he hit his 500th and 600th home runs in Cincy, but he'll go into the Hall as a Mariner, and deservedly so.

i was reading about the upcoming game yesterday while doing nothing at school and a tweet appeared that he retired. Surprising? Not at all, but still incredibly stunning.

Now my childhood is beyond over. Can't count how many games I went to the kingdome, or watched or listened to, where he just solidified his prowess in sport. In hindsight, with such a tainted era, he was easily the best player of our generation.

I felt dirty facepalming at a game a couple of weeks ago where he was brought in to pinch hit, but his time had come. First mariner in the hall of fame, and deservedly so.
