Electronic/ IDM thread!

So I've been really on this electronic binge for awhile now, and I find, for the most part, lovers of indie music can also appreciate this sort of thing, so I figured there could be potential for a nice discussion here.

Ps: I despise the term IDM (Intelligent Dance Music, don't even try and tell me that doesn't sound completely pretentious and full of itself) but sometimes its just necessary.

Some of my favorites:
Boards of Canada are absolutely essential electronic


The album Untrue by Burial is great, I highly recommend it. Best listened to in the dark alone to really feel some of the unique sounds in it.


SIlent Shout by The Knife is another great album. again, just really interesting stuff going on in terms of sound and synthesis.



Well, contribute what you want, make suggestions, or yell at me for liking electronic music, whatever you want!

Not really my cup. Although I do enjoy the rare electronic song like Everything in its right Place




But really I find the idea of IDM (as you call it), to be really REALLY hit and miss. Like one good song for every hundred. One of the hardest things to find is a tasteful electronic artist that isn't into house or techno.

I would suggest looking up Frou Frou, Bjork (kind of electronic, mostly singing oriented), Daft Punk, Beachhouse (only kind of touches the genre though), and maybe even Ghostland Observatory. It's sort of wierd to pin down the genre. THAT kind of electronica is more 80's like Diva Destruction or Godbox. It's almost like cheesy 80's horror movie music.

And if you ARE into that sort of 80's style electronica, the Cocteau Twins are your almighty gods.

Its "electronic" is a pretty vague description so its pretty hard to classify sometimes.  I mean sure there's a lot of subgenre and specifics, but I really don't care for irrelevant micro-genres and just give respects to the larger whole it belongs to and if I like it.

There are deffinitely some electronic acts out there that are less than savory, but you get that with any genre, but I just love the endless experimentation and innovation that goes along with electronic music.  It's really a no holds barr in terms of creativity and, if you pull it off right, anything goes.
All the artists you mentioned are great, Bjork's Homogenic is an amazing album.

That's pretty much it then. Unless you wanna get into house or trance, I think what you're looking for is Electronica that has Gothic leanings, like the Knife. They do alot of stuff that draws parallel with what the Cocteau Twins do, what The Cure almost do etc. In that case, I'd also suggest the Fuck Buttons.

Cocteau Twins are great no doubt, same with the Fuck Buttons, I love that sort of melodic noise thing they have going on.

Here's some atmospheric borderline ambient stuff thats pretty good, though its more of an album experience and not really a single, but nonetheless great.
