Making brakes wider by welding it

i don't wanna pay $50 for a wider binding for already super expensive bindings the original brake width is 110 mm i neet to make it 125mm, i am good with metal working so that isn't the issue, the issue is the concept of my idea and if i am the only one who thinks i can do it, i am planning on cutting the brake off right at the 90 degree angle of the brake and extending it 7.5mm on each side and welding on that piece to the brake on each side it seem simple enough, but i want to hear other opinions before i just decide to go cutting up my brakes

you really dont need to weld them. ive bent many pairs of brakes with a pole cut off about 5 inches from the handle  and a vice. Just do it in little tweaks, not like trying to bend it all the way in one move.

You could bend that much with your bare hands, and there isn't much welding to do on a 1/4 thick piece of metal. Your just making a mess out of a simple problem.

The joint will probably end up being weaker than the rebend. Just get a vice and a hollow pole

its the marker dukes, they come with 110mm brakes, i want to put them on hellbents, i know i know the suck for backcounty, but i am willing to suffice. i think that i could bend them, but it is 15mm thats a heafty bend, and a mig welder can do that thin easy

dont weld them, they will end up being weaker and break, i know from experience, i bent a pair of brakes and they ended up cracking so i had them welded, they ended up breaking my first time using them, and i was just clipping in.

well in that case i will try it out anyways, cause i just tested out the width of the 110mm and they are going to not fit even by bending them i would have to bend them a shit ton, so i will try to weld it and see what happens and if all else fails i will just have to buy the bigger brakes anyways, but if you are interested on how it goes, i will, make another post on this thread after i do it, i can also put pics up

You can't MIG stainless, it'll need to be TIG'd.

Just buy wider brakes, they do them in 130mm.

I'd just buy the 125mm brake. I had to bend THAT to make it pop consistently with Jesters on Hellbents. Nothing worse than eating shit and sitting up to watch your ski rocket down the mountain because the brake is hung up on the topsheet...

If you weld, cut it in the straight section and add your extension in there. Also cut on an angle, as fine an angle as you can, it'll give you way more surface area on the weld. Screw butt welding them.

really don't think it is stainless, i think it is a chrome paint overcoat, and if i buy the 130mm brake i'll have 110mm brakes to waste, well thanks for the tips and interest

anyone tought about bending brakes themselves?

thereby i mean; get a rod of Inox or anodized steel, bend it and cut it in desired length and form and replace the original brakes....

some guys on here have bent fks stock brakes(75mm) to fit hellbents.
i dont think 15mm is a problem.

i bent dukes 25mms

it works fine but the brake arms are so short to start with that when you bend them there's very little contact on the snow and the skis don't like to say together anymore because the brake arms are so short

they still work but dukes are the only bindings where i would actually recommend buying a wider brake

welding will make them weaker overall but it'll probably work, personally i wouldn't do it but they're your bindings

They ARE stainless.

Just bend them, or buy new ones, like everyone else has said.

ok to just satisfy you i will buy new ones, but since i have USELESS 110mm brakes i think i will still try to weld it for future reference, and i really don't thing they ARE stainless hence the fact they are a harder metal and stainless, is steel with less carbon which makes them softer, and since you can't bend them easily with you hands and when you bend them too much they crack, ie the are brittle like carbon steel make me think you are just assuming that they are stainless just by the color of the outer layer. so just stay tuned

Dude at least try bending them before you lay down cash on new ones. The worst case scenario is that you snap them or you're unhappy with the amount of remaining brake arm length.

i have my friend has the 110mm brakes it is,110mm at the very end of the brake, it is 94mm at the base of the brake, i will try to bend them as soon as i get them mounted, but what i am saying is if all else fails i am going to try to weld them, it may sound like a dumb idea, but trust me i have more common sense then i am getting credit for

well just got my dukes today, the brakes my friend had were def not duke brakes, will work by bending so fuck welding them, thanks for all the input
