Rollerblades

Hey,

I moved away from my home and therefore removed myself from the only ski hill in 600km. And now that summer is rolling in there is no chance of getting and runs in so I am looking for a new hobby, and hopefully something not too expensive.

So I found this video the other day and it really got me thinking about purchasing a pair of skates and practicing so I can one day skate like these guys:

Anyway my question for people that skate is how much difference would a pair of skates like that be compared to a normal brand of Wal Mart skates?

I have a normal cheap pair and I know the bearings will be a big difference as well as comfort. What I was thinking about is handling because of the height of the wheels and the 'Shoe' part of the skate. Is it worth while for me to invest in a decent pair? On a scale of 1-10 I'm about a 7 on a normal pair, maybe a 6.

I rollerbladed once, liked it, so my mom bought me a pair of blades for x-mas when i was younger. I wear size 14, so walmart doesnt carry that, so I had to get a pair from a website that are what the pros wear. they were 150 dollars knocked down to like 60 because they were an older model. I don't care about the model, and I just found them in my garage where they have been for the past 3 years. I'm starting to use them again, and the better blades like mine have a certain thing you can grind with between the wheels, dont know what its called, im sure someone does, but now that comes in handy

I'm not too concerned about grinding ledges and rails at the moment but as I progress I'm sure I will hop on something and give it a whirl.
Can anyone out there answer my question?

Do you jump or grind anything??? Are you saying you're like a 7 out of 10 just keeping your balance and street riding or do you mean tricks and stuff. You do know you can just change the bearings on your wal mart shits if you wanna go faster??

Nice blades might be more comfy than cheapos. if your not jumping or grinding or anything you can probably just stick with what you've got.

those valo skates in the video run for over $200 (for pro models) you might be able to find some cheaper online (just search in google shopping for the model you want). I would say go for the purchase.

Should have explained that a bit more.

Just riding around I'm ok at it. Right now I'm not into grinding or jumping over shit, nothing freestyle ish. The reason it looks like those might be easier to skate with is because of comfort (I have a wide foot) and the height from the ground to the actual shoe part is lower, therefore a lower center of gravity. Maybe I'm just retarded and my brain is thinking that. And I do realize that I will need good balance to do that kind of stuff so the ride height shouldn't make a difference.

Is it like comparing parabolic skis to straight skis?

you can just put smaller wheels on your skates to make them lower probably.

I find the newer style to be a bit more comfortable with the whole wide boot thing, but on the other hand a bit sloppier than a traditional old school hard boot.

buy NIMH's they are a way better deal than valos.  you can get complete nimhs for $150ish. and it is a bomb skate.

if your positive you dont want to grind shit or jump off anything big and just cruise around town like that, i suggest you just pick up some recreational skates, as opposed to the aggressive skates in the video. they ride a lot smoothers and its easier to turn with them. the skates in that video are designed to grind rails and jump off stairs/ skate park with. you can get some sicky cruising blades (no homo...?) at like sports mart or dunhams or whateva.

i picked up a 150 dollar pair of aggresive skates and super satisfied with them. no skate park in my city atm so i just use some pvc rails in my driveway for now. fun hobby to pick up if you like skiing. just be prepared to hurt your wrists
