switzerland chile game was bullshit, bad reffing ruined the game again. refs are just giving out way too many cards and giving them out way too easily. they need to learn that you don't have a game under control by giving cards for every foul. that red was complete bullshit and it basically ruined the chances for the swiss in that game. same with kaka's red last game, completely uncalled for

Ya the refs need to get the games more under control. The last yellow for Chile was a good call, the ref gave the guy a yellow for diving. Seems like he is maybe learning. Yea I agree they should be a little more forgiving with red cards and not give them out for something they didn't really see that well

My god Fernando Torres is awful - he got two fucking wide open opportunities in the span of less than one minute, and missed them both. Spain needs to give Navas a better target to cross to.

What I love is that if Spain cannot beat Chile, or outscore Switzerland, they are out of the world cup... They should have scored like 4 or 5 against honduras... They could be so screwed... haha. Especially if the Swiss score a bunch on Honduras...

I'd laugh so hard if England, Spain, Italy, Germany, and France didn't even make it out of their groups...

Brazil, Argentina, and Holland would be on cruise control...

Uraguay beat RSA and drew with a severely overrated and useless zomibie French team... That's not all too impressive in my eyes.

Nobody has truely lived up to potential... only Argentina, Holland, and Brazil have really dominated...

I agree with Argentina playing well and proving themselves so far. I think Australia deserves some credit for holding out against god teams with a man down each time.

the offense isn't clicking like it had been yet, but the D is on point and Stekelenburg has done great in replacing van der Sar. If you remember Euro 2008, the dutch played amazing in the qualifier round destroying Italy and France and going undefeated only to flop in elimination to Russia in the quarters. Maybe it will be a good thing for them not to hit stride so early as they got lackadaisical last time because of it.

Yeah... maybe they peaked too early... but honestly, Russia was on FIRE during euro 08... i thoroughly expected them to win it all...

Then Spain (who's now been downright hapless in this WC) came in and took it...

oh my god, every Portuguese kid in my high school was going nuts over the win.  Every other car i passed on the road had a Portugal flag.

You beat North Korea, quite possibly the worst team in the World cup.  Thats like Canada beating Belarus in Olympic hockey.

and I have a feeling that Spain is going to come back strong in their game against Chile.  They had so many opportunities today but no finish.  Torres needs to step it up.  If it all works out, Spain will lead their group while Portugal will place second in theirs, putting them against each other in the next round.  Definitely a match I will not miss for the world.

On the note of the winner, its going to be either Argentina, Germany, Spain or Brazil.  I can't see any other team winning this year, seeing how they've played.   Especially Italy and England, just terrible.  And Portugal are just choke artists 101 (look at last world cup).

I dont think you understand that this pretty much guaranties Portugal's spot in the next round because of goal differential, now the Ivory Coast needs Brazil to beat Portugal by 2 and Ivory Coast win by 8 goals, or some combination of 10 Goals. So i would assume thats why they are happy.

there's a reasonable chance that spain comes in 2nd, and consequently plays brazil in the next round. brazil hasn't impressed me too much yet. i think spain has a real shot at beating them. and if they do beat brazil, i'd say they will win the cup.

Seeing as they'd then have to go through the Netherlands... who are probably the best counter attacking and ball possession team in the world cup...

I'd have my doubts... This is the year for the oranje.

germany? realistic chance of not making it out of their group. Italy? Same scenario. England? Spain? France? Hell.. even Portugal is not safe if they get clobbered by Brazil, and Cote'd'voire goes on a rage attack vs. DPRK...

could be craaaaaaaazy once knockouts hit... even if only 1 or 2 of those dont make it.

Here's hoping Uraguay routs them 4-0 and RSA goes on.

I have nothing against Mexico really... other than all the cholo idiots in my town who claim mexico super hard even though they probably havent even set foot down there...

but I'd really like to see south africa get to the 2nd round...  no matter what... they have not dissapointed their people.

I expect Mexico to come back with a goal or two. They are just too good to get beat 4-0 by Uruguay who are playing mediocre at best.
That sucks about France, they were so damn good last year. Watching Ribierry is amazing too. Ill be curious to see how it turns out.

this just isn't france we're watching. completely different team now, compared to the team a few years ago, and what the team will most likely see in a few weeks.

out of frustration i've been saying some horrible things about south africa....

i just don't want them to go through. France don't deserve it, but in my eyes, neither does south africa.

first goal came in off a shoulder, and i'm still baffled by that gourcuff red card. It was a foul, maybe even a yellow card, but that was never a red card.

No matter what happens, South Africa has done their nation absolutely proud... Absolutely hats off... Event has gone on better than almost anyone has expected... Not a hitch... Great security. No real issues.

God damn I wish the ref of the Mexico/Uruguay game was the ref for every game. That guy knows what the hell he is doing. Congrats to Mexico and Uruguay, both strong teams.
Thats crazy how France is out already though lol! Grats to SA too for putting up a good fight at the WC.

YEEE man< todays games were pretty intense...uruguay vs. mexico was great (both awesome teams)

BUT i cant believe the french are out !?!?! finals one year, no wins and elimination in the first round the next. thats kind of sickening isnt it!

previous world cup results shouldn't even be considered, this shit happens every 4 years, a lot of things can change in that time.
For example:
WC 1998: France wins
WC 2002: France doesn't make it out of group stage, no goals scored
WC 2006: Reach finals
WC 2010: Out in group stage

like i said before, all those results were 4 years apart, anything can happen, there are lots of reasons why a team isn't always consistent, especially in a sport like soccer where one goal can change the whole game.
things that come in to play: team changes (new players, new management, etc) injuries, team chemistry, etc.

You can compare it to olympic hockey let's say, since its also on the international level and it comes every 4 years
2002: Canada wins gold
2006: Canada finishes in 7th
2010: Canada wins gold

i guess that the fact events like this only come around every four years its a hindrance to the teams....say they are a bunch of older, more experienced players who work well together and can pull off a great game, and then the next time the olympics or the world cup rolls around, the people who were on the last team are all too old or past their prime and the team is made of new, fresh but inexperienced players. hmm, it makes sense doesnt it?
