anything '00 or above cause of head gasket issues. although theyve now been having issues with that series just a different problem not related to head gaskets - i forget what my subie guy told me. some fuel system problem?
every subaru is pretty much the same as far as models. just different features. im a short wagon guy.

From experience.

Get an impreza sport wagon. Pre 2000. 2.2L with as few miles as you can get. I bought an impreza with 170k on it. It's now pushing 220k and i've had it for maybe 14 months. I drive the shit out of it, and I've only had to change the oil, and replace the clutch (which is why I got it for so cheap in the first place). These cars own.

Or, just get anything with a 2.2L engine. If its a 2.5L engine made before like 2004, dont trust that the head gasket will last past 100000 miles unless its been replaced already.

2.2 is solid any year like he said.
2.5's changed series in '00 not '04 though. so '00 and above.

Headgasket on 2.5L did not change in  2000.


Look at the statistics. something like 40% of all 2.5's had to get replaced headgaskets around 100k miles. In 2004, they changed the engine completely. it's all good now.

phase 1 ended in 1999
phase 2 began in 2000.

I personally know 2 people with 2.5 RS's who blew their headgaskets around 90-110k

They forgot that detail during phase 2 i guess.

That should be extremely easy to find in the U.S.

But really, STI's are sick cars.  Fun to drive all year and handle the snow very well.

in 2004, they installed head gaskets that were made with a much better material, that now lasts a lot longer.

its still the phase 2 engine. phase 1 had internal head gasket issues. phase 2 had (substantially less) external. they didnt change anything in '04. its the same engine as far as i know.

all i'm saying is, if you look at the percentages and statistics, between 2000 and 2003, there was no drop-off when it came to head gasket issues.. and from what I have come to understand, is they used a better material in the head gaskets thereafter 2004.

ive researched it quite in depth since i understand i'm definitely going to need to buy a new suby within the next year or 2 with the miles i tend to put on mine and how hard i drive.

if i had the money i would get a Subaru over an Audi. and i would get an Audi before i got a Porsche, and I would get a Maserati before I got an all flat black Lamborghini with a ski rack.

but i don't so i have a 1990 volvo wagon, its beast, and cheap to fix

If you want AWD have you looked at volvo at all?

I drive a 98 Volvo X70 with AWD, it seats up to 7, and it absolutely rips in the snow. It's the perfect ski car, or atleast it is for me.

and i dont understand all that car talk. so i'd say get a outback sport cause those are my favorite ones.

to be honest just find an outback newer the better. theyre going to be cheaper than anything else because there are so many of them. don't buy a wrx youre going to be paying for thrills when you could be paying for better maintained.

Yea, my last one was given to me by my dad, he beat the shit out of it, literally.  I learned to drive in a field with it, and I went 50mph in a field, hitting rocks, and still lasted to 208k

But it got between 16-18mpg in its prime, then once it got over 200k it was getting around 14mpg

Now my new jeep gets about 20mpg, just wish it was a little more

haha i guess what i mean is my dislike for them is purely cosmetic, it doesnt have anything to do with bad experiences with jeeps or anything i just dislike the way they look
