Camera Suggestions

I'm looking to get a better camera for next season. I'm looking to spend around 1,000. Any Suggestions? Also, what do you think about getting a camera with a harddrive, such as the Canon HF20, which I've been looking at, versus a camera that uses actual film?

1. Do NOT get a harddrive camera
2. You obviously have no idea about how cameras work at all, you might want to reconsider purchasing a 1000 dollar camera. Im guessing by "real film" you meant dv tapes, in your case id either check out some smaller, cheaper SD cameras (panasonic gs500 is a solid one) or possibly a cheap HD camera like a canon hv30 or hf200. (hv30 = tapes hf200 = flash memory)

hv30 they look sooo good and you cant get a better deal.

by far... but you do need to buy things that will make it more expensive in order to use a dslr properly. and they are definitely not beginner friendly... takes some time to get used to.

Don't start with a dslr. The lack of autofocus and other quirks would not be fun for you.

Yeah I've heard bad things about hard drive cameras.  And if your just starting getting into the HD scene I would suggest the HV30.  You can get insanely nice quality out of it if you don't use the automatic settings and know the camera very well.  You also have to play around to figure out how to render your videos best bust after all that you can get the cam used for around 500ish.

The only thing cheap about a DSLR is the camera body. A solid DSLR setup costs much more than a video camera setup because glass is expensivo.

The Canon HF20 doesn't have a hard drive, it records to solid-state memory.

half of your statement is correct.

im not sure what you mean by "solid" but i have a 7d, 5 lenses, filters, memory, batteries, glidecam and fluid head, and ive spent about 2500 on all of said equipment. an hvx alone costs nearly 5 grand.

a t2i with a fluid head and a glidecam will come to just over a grand.

youre statement about glass is half correct.
yes, new, digital glass is quite expensive, especially for fast glass. but a huge misconception is that you HAVE to buy new (or used-new) digital glass. WRONG! its actually harder to film with the newer digital lenses (foucus breathes; more elements; normally a less precise, geared focus ring). Currently, my most used lens (when im not follow caming) is my pentax 50mm 1.4 that was made in the early 60s... fucking amazing lens with crazy depth of field. $80 on ebay and all you need is a $5 adapter to have a perfect fit on your EOS mount (or any mount for that matter)

Truth, but the point I was trying to make is that once you have a solid collection of good glass, a DSLR setup isn't as cheap as people make it out to be. Wides, semi-wides, macro, telephoto, fish, etc. all add up. I prefer old manual lenses also, and there are definitely gems out there, but you can't bank on it.
