Just because they produced a synthetic cell doesn't mean God doesn't exist and/or didn't create humans. I'm not saying he did, but it isn't proof.

This doesn't prove or disprove anything of metaphysical nature. I guess as the OP kind of stated it does make the creation of life, often attributed to god look less impressive. It also hurts the creationist argument that life cannot simply be created by natural processes. 
It is pretty awesome that they were able to make that in a lab. I still really won't be impressed until they can make this.

Maybe I read it wrong but they didn't really create life. I think it said they make a synthetic dna code and put it into a host cell. So yes the dna code worked, and thats a huge leap, but they still had to put it in a host cell. They didn't just go poof and create it.

lol. That has no correlation to God. Technology has improved and they're able to produce a fully functioning cell. That has no relevance to the idea that God doesn't exist or shtuff of that nature.

normally i would participate, but....


oh fuck it, all the "arguments" creationists ever had where rough and wrong interpretations of some scientific evidences or the total negligence of other scientifically proven facts.

so since this development either makes god less godly or humans more godly. in either case, i dont see why somebody needs the bible to explain geological/biological phenomenons.

You see, this is why arguments regarding religion fucking suck. People that don't believe in God resort to being cunts instead of just stating their opinion in a mature manner. Like, I've never seen a creationist say something like "you're all fucking retarded to not believe in the bible". You can get your point across without being a complete douche. Or maybe you can't.

And I find it pretty funny when people say shit like people who believe in God are brain dead...  you're no more correct in any of your assumptions than someone who is religious so get over yourself.

People should be a little more mature about this issue, on BOTH sides of the spectrum. Atheists/Nonbelievers should respect religious people's views on god, just as religious people should respect Atheists/Nonbelievers opinions with respect. Maturity is a key factor in all these shitstorms. So to both sides, please, if your views on matters of religion aren't respectful, keep them to yourselves. It just makes trouble.   Yeesh. What am I, french or something?

this is pretty interesting actually.

we've been moving genes and small pieces of DNA between species for a long ass time. now they've managed to do it with a whole genome (granted a very small one). an impressive feat though not particularly surprising. this was an inevitability.

Whatever atheist fag, I'm not even religious.

Doesn't change the fact that science is going too far. I don't even care about God, I've never been to a church in my life (well except European ones purely from an architectural viewpoint), but the world is a mysterious place with a very precariously balanced ecosystem and we don't need a bunch of idiots in lab coats fucking everything up for us even more than they already have. I say leave nature alone.

actually, hes got a point. when you think about how much nuclear firepower is available right now, idk how often you could extinguish the earth, everything above "once" is too much and all that stuff was invented/discovered by aforementioned "lab guys"

yeah, but think about all the benefits nuclear power has given us. If global warming was happening due to coal/gas power stations, nuclear power would be one of the prime ways to get 'clean' power.

Last night I watched a Science Channel special on the scientists who created this artificial life form. This is absolutely insane. I was wondering if anyone else saw this and what their thoughts were.

Not really accurate. Synthetic leather is not leather grow on a tree. In that it is 100% genetically cow skin, but grew on a tree. This is a more apt analogy to what they actually did.

They sequenced an entire genetic code using a computer one base pair at a time. Inserted the traits that they wanted the cell to have. Then injected the cell into a living cell, the 100% synthetic DNA (created literally by adding chemical, no biological processes were used in its creation besides yeast to synthesize.) then took over the dna of the cell and transformed it into itself.

This flies in the face of everything humans have believed that life is in some way magical, although it is beautiful, there is nothing magical about life. It is a series of chemical reactions, and we have decoded and created the very basic elements of these reactions. We basically have the instruction booklet for life, we can create anything we want, and as computer power increases and this technology grows up the possibilities are limitless. In the near future imagine a bacteria engineered to destroy all cancer cells, or eat oil spills, or turn plastic into hydrogen energy. In the long terms we could create synthetic meat that grows like a plant, increase the yields of plant 1000%, We could make biological computers or regrow human body parts. literally endless. We are reaching our next Epoch of our evolution, first came tools, then the industrial revolution, then computers, and now this.

THIS WILL CHANGE EVERYTHING.
