After reading a thread in NSG, I'm shocked about people rationalizing that its OK for tobacco to be a part of newschool skiing.

This hopefully will let people step up to the plate, and maybe someone will see this who matters. It was quoted in the other thread that newschoolers.com pretty much invented this sport, so the site has say in it.

Tobacco has nothing to do with skiing. Their money will not help the sport. Anyone who takes thier money should rethink what they are doing.

THIS is taken from GT (general tobacco) 's website:

Older folks usually don't look up to athletes the way young kids do. By sponsoring someone who young kids look up to a (newschool skier), and putting adds in a magazine, which is based around newschool skiing, which IS a sport of [B]ABUNDANT POPULATION OF YOUTH, GT is DIRECTING THEIR MARKETING STRATEGIES TOWARDS YOUTH and thus ARE NOT FULLY COMPLIANT WITH THE MASTER SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT[/B]

The purpose of this thread is not to argue and convince the other side; its to petition Freeskier to not accept advertising from tobacco companies. Hopefully, someone at Freeskier hears about this. That is the point of this thread.

As long as Freeskier allows tobacco companies to purchase advertisements in their magazine/podcasts, I will not spend another penny on their product. Granted, their subscriptions are what, 2 bucks a year? No wonder they are trying to attract as much advertising $$ as possible.

There is really no point to this petition. FDA regulations are changing as of July and General or any other Tobacco products will not be allowed to use sports marketing or athlete endorsements. The point made that tobacco sponsorships or advertising don't help the sport of skiing is wrong. Not every pro skier makes the amount of money that you might think, and a little additional funding will help put that movie segment together that you all enjoy watching. Any company that chooses to market themselves in skiing through magazine/web ads, athlete endorsements, or film sponsorship are fueling the sport of skiing because it is injecting more money into the game.

But why, though? Are they just good people? Did they sit down with their marketing managers and say, "Hey, them skier people sure are nice. Let's help their industry."?

They did it for purely financial reasons. They wanted to advertise their product to a new market. And until they can statistically prove that Freeskier's true demographic comprises of over 18 year olds, what they are doing is against the law.

isn't it the other way around, don't you have to prove it to bring legal action against them. I mean there is also no study to show that the majority of their demographic is 13, so for all they know they are doing nothing illegal.

I'd bet that freeskiers main demographic is over 18.

Maybe so, I don't know. I suppose it would be (innocent until proven guilty). In which case, something should be done.

I honestly don't know what freeskier's main demo is - that's the caveat.

What is "an abundant population"? 15%? 25%? Half?

its not the average age of the reader, its if there is AN ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF YOUTH subject to the advertisement. Im sure an ABUNDANT AMOUNT OF YOUTH reads freeskier on the regular and knows who peter olenick is.

Yeah, the original purpose was to petition. It was probably inevitable that it would become an argument, but like I said hopefully someone at Freeskier sees this petition/argument and says "Shit."

How the fuck would you even research or prove something like the word ABUNDANT. That's about as legally vague as you can get admit it.

And you still didn't even answer my first question, would you be opposed to freeskier running pbr adds. Don't even tell me your beef here is with breaking the law, it's with smoking period isn't it.

i smoke ciggies (used to do it full time, now i smoke em every now and then) and i smoke spliffs every damn day. but that doesnt mean i think its cool to advertise tobacco to kids, theyre just too impressionable

Way for mrt skier to fuck it up. I smoke but i still feel that they shouldnt be advertising, everybody is vulnerable to marketing techniques. Look at Traveling Circus i guarantee that raised sales of Lines park skis. People see the skiers having fun, doing more creative stuff than average, and just plan killing it. "oMg wHaT skiS aRe thoseS" I know i want to buy the afterbangs now more than before i watched it.

i feel a hell of a lot "safer" throwing in a general than drinking a massive can of sugar, preservatives, carcinogens (yeah, those artificial sweeteners and shit they throw in do cause cancer, kinda like tobacco products). while i might buy a tin of the stuff every 6 months or so and really could care less about tobacco in general (no pun intended), i don't see any reason why they shouldn't be allowed to advertise in a mature fashion. everyone's seen the video of PRO chugging whatever, it's not like a little tobacco sponsorship is changing his image. i haven't noticed any gimmicky shit that seems to be targeting the underage population, and as long as they don't cross that line, all the power to 'em. let's be honest, if a kid wants to use tobacco when they're 15, nine times out of ten they aren't gonna go looking for snus, they'll steal a cigarette from their parents or something. i'd rather see general advertising than someone like american spirit, or any big cigarette brand, since a). the dangers of snus are LESS than with most or all other tobacco products (not they they don't still exist) and b). putting a snus in doesn't bother those around you, like smoking a butt (or blunt). just my two cents, don't really have strong feelings either way but i really don't see it as much of an issue.

No I don't either. It's not like freeskier is running banner ads over the top of middle school doors though. I'm just taking the devils advocate side because I think it's wrong to say a tobacco company can't run ads in a magazine having to do with the skiing industry.

Really I'm just trying to prove a point that cigs are even more vilified than alcohol these days. Run seatbelt checkpoints every 10 miles on the highway......ban all inverts from all parks.....mandate helmet wearing at all resorts......DEAR GOD MAN LIFE IS DANGEROUS AND WE NEED MOOOOOORE RESTRICTION.....WOULD SOMEBODY PLEASE THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!111!!11

Eric Jackson of Jackson kayaks was just sponsored this year by Budweiser beer and the kayak and raft community applauded. I was just wondering how that might go over in our apparently still tight ass sport??

i like your point, that can be seen all over. people are just huge pussies these days (lawsuits, laws, it gets ridiculous. i consider myself to be quite liberal too...). a discussion i was having the other day involved the SLC bike trails, and the fact that many are being dumbed down to a point where they aren't even fun to ride. everything has to cater to the weak bodied, weak minded, and unfortunately prevalent types in the US these days (a bunch of overweight pussies, heh). sorry to go off topic a bit, thought it was worth mentioning though, not trying to offend anyone here but the action sports community definitely  doesn't fall into the groups i was talking about for the most part.

there  is also a risk of dying if u mess up a backflip and land on your head. its a risk you take, and youre well aware of it. lets be happy that companies still put substantial amounts of money into our industry, even in such economically difficult times.
and if a person consumes tobacco because of a freeskier ad, then thats pretty sad.

And while we're at it lets clasify youth.....under 16....under 18...under 13 what is the actual number??? All I see is you generalizing and making assumptions. How old are you smuggs????

Are you aware that freeskier directly states that if you are under 13 you shouldn't even be on their website???

Great, smokers are again arguing for the right to pollute everyone elses lungs. Im sorry i dont give a fuck about you, but frankly I've been sitting around for the past 4 days surrounded by people who can smoke freely and I don't smoke. Its fucking disgusting

Get your niccotene addicted brains out of the gutters and realize that smoking takes far more away from society than it gives. A little money in the short run is fuck all compared to the health care costs, hardships on families who loose people and the pure piss of from having someone light up beside you. Obviously we can't get rid of everything that's bad for you, but smoking is a pretty fucking good place to start

pretty sure general tobacco and general snus have NO RELATION WHATSOEVER. i couldn't find any link between those two companies. general snus is a swedish company that sells snus products only, general tobacco is an american company that doesn't have a snus product. general snus is the one sponsoring skiers. they are owned by swedish match (from what i could find), who does market other tobacco products.
