January 2011 jobs/internships?

So, are you looking to get a run of the mill resort job like a lifty? Or do something relevant to your degree?

I'll can only speak for Tahoe(N lake) really. I guess it's not what you would call cheap, but if you search long and hard enough, it's definitely do able.Especially if you get a room mate. Super cool town, really relaxed and all the people are awesome. The one thing that I will say though is that at times it is really annoying not to have a car. The Tahoe Area regional transit bus is ok, but can be unreliable sometimes. No biggie, but something to mention.

Squaw and Alpine probably have the best terrain and both have nice parks. Alpine is probably my favourite resort in the area. It's pretty quiet most of the time and has lots of high speed lifts and easily accessible BC. You also get treated really well as an employee there, can't say the same for Squaw.

Northstar has the best park, but the rest of the mountain is pretty flat. If you're going to be at Northstar, look for housing in Kings Beach.

Homewood is really fun on pow days as they have some sick tree skiing. But again the majority of it is quite flat. 

Sugar Bowl is a lot like Homewood only steeper.

yeah man, thats awesome info. I was in tahoe this year over christmas, I skied heavenly, alpine, and kwood. I absolutely loved kirkwood, but Alpine for some reason didn't click for me. I dunno what it was, maybe I just didnt know where to go. As far as employment goes, I just want something that my school would approve for credit. I may be going out with a buddy or 2, so rent would hopefully not be too bad. my friend worked at northstar this january and really liked it, but I may want something with more steeps.

oh and i'm gonna add hood and whistler to the list, if I can get out there/ get a visa haha

Yo i'm also looking to do the same. I go to St. Olaf College in MN and we have a J-term as well. If anybody know of Physics/Math related internships out west lemme know!

Whistler is really hard to beat. It really has everything you could ask for. Pillows, steeps, deep pow, Good snowfall, awesome parks, and great trees, sheer size ect. The town is amazing too. The fact it's expensive is the only downside I found, but it's the perfect size and has a lot going on. Generally just a fun place to live. It's also nice being close to a big city with international airport ect. If I could choose somewhere to live for the rest of my life, it would probably be whistler.

Surprised you didn't like Alpine. But there are are definitely some fun places to go that you really have to know are there. The best riding is really the stuff which is a small hike away. Kirkwood is cool too, but i felt that the scene on North Lake is better. Definitely more relaxed and chilled vibe. Plus there are so many resorts close together.

yeah come to think of it whistler would be absolutely ideal. it just depends what job i could get. the reason i wasnt a fan of alpine was that it was absurdly crowded the day i went. total zoo. and they hadnt gotten snow in a while, so their parks were not that sweet. kwood had such a sick vibe though, and some real fun steeps and shoots. got first tracks on the saddle twice which was unbelieveable haha. anyone have more info?

so your trying to get an intern spot/get hired for 4 weeks? sorry man but i dont know a ton of places that would be up for that, almost every mountain job includes working the entire season.

I've known a bunch of kids from my school who have done this, a lot of companies have programs for it. I'm not specifically looking for a mountain job, just a job/internship near a mountain

best of luck and hope you find the intership you are looking for.  The Ski Journal has 3 and 6 month internship programs, 4 weeks is pretty short.

i spent the winter before last being a lifty at alta, before i started college.there was great employee housing and meals  ,all were just taken out of your pay check and you lived at the base of the collins lift. and if you wanted to ski park you could get a voucher to head over to the bird. it was a really fun time, met people that are some of my really good friends now.

kinda hard to go back to the real world afterward though, youre basically living the dream

haha yeah my buddy dindorf was a lifty that same year, had the time of his life. I go to school with him now and always hear about how epic his experience was.

check out around snowbird/ alta because i know goldminers was looking for some people to work there plus i no most of those places have employee stay

hahah no way. i have a dindorf hato to0! we were like the youngest people there, and then he peaced like mid feb.dindorfs fuckin awesome, especially those hats....
