Ankle Surgery

I'm having ankle surgery on monday, after i sprained it badly playing soccer, last july!! Yep - it's been ages, and still isn't right - i've had an Xrays, and MRI's (which say that my soft tissues are all fine - ligaments etc... ) ... but it's still painful, in compression, a mechanical pain... anyway, im having surgery on Mon and the surgeon is going to go in for a look and clean out scar tissue, or anything else he finds that's fucked up.

Anyone had ankle surgery before (tanner hall, yes.... i know.... but my ankles are NOT broken...)? What's the recovery like, from simply having your foot cut open! Im not having ligament reconstruction or anything, so hopefully it'll be a couple of weeks or so... just wondered how painful etc it was going to be....

It's not an arthroscopy either, it's a proper incision job....

Cant answer your question from experience, just what I imagine and read online......
Basically you won't be walking for quite awhile.  IT's a good thing you're doing it in the summer though, not just because of skiing, but because going in a pool will help a lot.  From what I imagine, water training (swimming haha) will increase your strength quicker, at least it does for all other parts of your body (knee, arms, etc)

 spring 2008i tore my posterior tibial tendon and they had to do surgery. it took me a good 6 weeks to recover. i had a walking cast for a good amount of time but it was still hard to walk. i didn't have any pain at all but i didn't have much fun either. i had 2 screws in my ankle

bones heal much faster than tendons. let us know how it goes

broke my tib fib last september. had surgery and was walking by 2 months, running in 3. it still hurts whenever i run though

Thanks dudes... Yeah I'm not having a major surgery (reconstruction or anything) just hopefully a clean out, to free it up a bit, as I suspect there is scar tissue etc from sprain... Some I'm hoping it'll be short, just the healing process from surgery itself... Hope it doesn't hurt too much! I'll let you know how it goes!

Ok so- so far, so good.... Back at home with my foot up.... Still all totally numb, so hoping it isn't going to hurt too much... They give you mad good drugs before the op... I was nervous as fuck and hating it- then, IV in and wohay.... Started to enjoy it, which is kinda fucked!! But I was off my tits on all sorts....

it will probably hurt... a lot. take your meds BEFORE it starts to hurt. And make sure you do all the physical therapy or it could end up just creating more scar tissue

i broke my ankle two years ago and tore several ligaments while breaking it... had to go trough surgery and now have 5 screws and a metal plate in it.

the recovery took me 6 months, so i guess you will have way less than that. After surgery i could now step on my foot for like a month and a half. During the first month i had to put my foot up all the time cause everytime i had my foot down i felt incredible pressure and pain on my ankle.

After that, i started rehab and it was ok, nothing wi painfull but its really hard to recover all the movement i had before the injury. I think my ankle will never ully recover but that doesnt stop me from doing what i did before (skiing hard, playing competitive soccer)

So for me it was like a really bad first month, and the recovery is boring, just take it slow so you can ully recover.

Thanks dude.... Yeah no significant injury, but they had to shave a little bit of bone off the subtalar joint and remove some scar tissue... Was a pretty quick op, 45 mins max... I'm not in a cast, just surgery shoe and bandages. I imagine having hardware in your ankle would suck! Thanks for the insight- I'm keeping it up and icing it....

Yeah thats good, icing it and keep it up, that helped me a lot!! also i insist, dont rush it to play sports or anything, take your time and it will heal just fine.

So the nerve block wore off this morning in the early hours, so felt first pain... It's not too bad, kind of a deep intense ache... But the pain meds are also really good.... So I'm pretty comfortable. Being British, I must say I was really impressed with the whole process here (had it done in Houston) I was operated on by one of the US olympic team surgeons and he was awesome. I was told by one of the other dr's that he's operated on people who've gone on to win gold medals and NBA championships.... So, I'm hoping for xgames gold next winter!!!!

Your lucky with your nerve block wearing off. I had a rod put in my tibia and pins across below the knee and 2 right above my ankle. When i got the nerve block I couldnt pee for 48 hours, so yes, i got cathed. It sucks. I'm also recovering from nerve damage from the block, and its been a month. My quad hasnt worked during the entire time. I'm never getting a nerve block again.

woah man that sucks - vibes to you....

Sounds like some serious surgery right there though, and just wondering, could it be the actual surgery that fucked nerves, not the block? I broke my collar bone, and although i didn't have surgery on it, when the bones started to regrow, into a large callous bone area around the original break, it put pressure on my C6 nerve (i think it was C6, might of been C8.....) anyway, i never noticed but i kept dropping the toilet lid and stuff... and couldn't figure out why.... basically the nerve had been damaged and my left thumb wouldn't work from the knuckle up, i had no reaction to force from it, was totally weird.... i did eventually heal back up and work again, but nerves take AGES to heal because when they die, they regrow from the top down, and it's like a cm a month or something.... so hopefully it'll all return to normal, but might just take ages.....

It is the worst feeling ever though, being able to touch your toes and move them around with zero feeling, they're just like bits of meat!

ya so far its looking like the actual nerve block caused it, since they injected the block right into my femoral nerve. i had electrical stim and my quads started to fire, so thats all good. My nerve is compressed, not dead, so another theory is that during the surgery they left my leg bent towards my stomach too long, causing the nerve to compress. But ya, I dont really care what happened as long as I come back 100%. I've been using a pimp cane to walk around for the past few days after graduating from crutches. Its a great feeling
