ANOTHER flash question

so im looking at the rf-602 triggers off ebay, to work with my D90. my budget is nearly zero, so as far as flashes go im looking for the bare minimum. on the ebay pages it lists all the compatible nikon flashes, and other brands. but on a different ad, it said they would work with any 12 volt flashes. so....a few questions:

do the transmitters work with other flashes, ie; cheapo craigslist flashes?
are all basic flashes 12 volts?
do you have to use a flash with a "sleep mode", as some of the ads say? what is this?

any other info or experiences to guide me? i snooped on strobist for a while and looked all over fredmiranda, and couldnt really find straight answers. thanks for the help!

Save up for PWs, Cybersyncs or Skyports, seriously. My eBay triggers lasted 2 shoots before I was completely pissed off at them.

Then SB-24, SB-26, SB-28, SB-28DX, 555 or 285.

I disagree, Ive shot with ebay triggers for the last two years. The first set I got two years ago had some issues, but he set I bought last year worked completely fine. I did all of my on location studio lighting shoots with these triggers all semester and not once had a mis-fire or no fire with them.

The receivers look like that, theres a shit ton of sets all over ebay.

i understand where you're coming from, but i just cant justify an additional 3-400$ spent on something i'd use as infrequently as i will.

Well you should.

Why would you even consider buying a shitty off brand when I, as well as BamBam, gave you good Nikon alternatives. Hell, the nikon I gave you was cheaper than that flash. I guess Im not suprised no one else has tried to help you.

simmer down there bud, i was just clarifying. i just bought that flash, do you think i should get two receivers or three? the price difference isnt a huge deal, but do you think ill ever really need three? i will be using the setup for people photography, some skiing, and a moderate amount of artsy shit. i know it depends on my situation and preferences, but id be interested to know how often you use more than one or two. thanks, blake.

Uhm, do you have more than one flash? That should pretty much answer your question.

I have 3 receivers, but have yet to find a reason to have three flashes going at once. I typically just use one flash, but I would definitely buy at leas two receivers if you have the flashes for them, or think you will in the future.  Spend the extra ten bucks and have the safety of knowing your receivers will sync properly with the transmitter, rather than buy one a year from now and hope it works with your set... or just have a back up for when you drop one.

yep, i hope your name isnt actually Despite? and I ended up getting two. I figure I'll be able to upgrade the system if I get to the point where I really need three lights.
