WHY does the forum interface suck.

I don't really think anyone can argue that does.

I've been involved in message boards and discussion groups since I got my first computer 1997.

For gods fucking sake its 20fucking10 and this forum software has half the functionality of web cerca 2000.

I just don't get it, obviously NS has the dough. And I mean relatively lots and lots of dough. But all you have to do is go to any other forum to see whats missing here.

Why no multi quote????

Why no editable quotes?

Why no edit post function?

Why does the search function blow donkey cock?

What the fuck is wrong with this retarded post box. Pop out prompts? seriously? I have tried 3 browsers and can only get them to work intermittently. I'm sure if i put serious work in to trouble shooting I might be able to figure it out, but why should I this is web2010 it should be easy as shit. Other forums are.

I just clicked the button to try and see if the retarded system where you have to add a photo to the library before you can insert it in a post has been shitcanned yet but what would you know...no fucking pop up box.

I just don't get it, you guys obviously have a kick ass web design team and a kick ass budget to go with em. The search has to be a joke.

I'm not trying to affect change, just looking for some answers.

oh yeah well um how does it work? I just tried to edit the post I quoted from you. If there's a way to do it it's not intuitive. Which is sort of my whole point

Those are what make NS NS. simple, clean, no multi-quote clutter. and an edit post button? so we wouldn't have gems like the faunt got bigger?

The search has always been sub-par, they know that. but if i remember correctly and dont quote me on it but i think they would have to rewrite the whole of the forums in order to update it.

for pics, turn off fancy editor, and if your as seasoned at the internet as you claim you should be able to figure out the html tags.

Also they did update it once, they got a google search and THAT blew donkey dick.

If you hate NS's interface so much, feel free to click that little X at the top of your browser and peace.

I'm not telling you guys to go pick up vB or anything. But seriously why won't you add some functionality?

For example it'd be really nice, if I could quote and respond to your post and the post bellow it in a single post. Additionally it'd be nice to be able to separate his post into multiple quotes so that I can individually respond to each point.

Why not just make quotes a tag operated element?

Being able to edit your own posts would not be handled well on a site with this demographic. It would be chaotic. And that's what kind of makes NS the gem that it is. If you fuck up, you're not gonna live it down. =)

Why would it be chaotic.

I HATE to use TGR as an example because thats not what I'd like this place to become, but look over there. Everyone can edit/delete posts or entire threads for the thread creator. And even so, if you fuck up your not going to live it down and as a result most people don't delete their fuck ups, they edit formatting and links, delete multi posts that make it through the spam filter, etc. Because over there i've seen mods resurrect that were deleted due to the butt hurt of the OP, way back machine pages and screen shots of entire threads posted up when threads were deleted due to the butt hurt of a mod.

Give NSers a little credit and give them some more freedom. I doubt the world as we know it will end.

look no embarrassing fuck ups in this text, but I see where I ment to write a word but forgot to do so. I notice HBoT syndrom so it, i'd like to go back and add a line break. Not trying to cover anything up but it'd be nice if I could edit it slightly just to make it a little more readable.

You clearly have no clue.

The shit that I delete on a daily basis is enough to say that giving this site the ability to edit their posts is a terrible idea. I can't even imagine what my job would be like on here if I not only had to clean up after their first postings, but to have to clean up after they edit them too. Until this site can show its maturity, they will never gain the right to edit posts. And believe me, they have a long way to go (no offense to you others who actually adore this site and make my job easy =) )

No seriously though I don't have any idea. Aside from spam bots and kiddie porn what do you delete that would be harmed by allowing editable posts.

I'm assuming if you're deleting it its against the rules, I'm assuming if its against the rules you can just ban them for it. If you ban them then you don't have to worry about subsequent edits.

No, he has a very valid point, a little over exageration, but true. We really should be able to edit posts, and quotes much easier. Also, the search bar is awful, you have to search the exact words of what it was, and the function of the search bar is to find something you cannot find, so you obviously wouldn't know the tread name.

not being able to edit posts is what 90% of ns humor consists of. I prefer it the way it is. Just double check what you're typing, and it's fine.

I like the current layout. It's simple, easy to read, and relatively fast.

But someone needs to teach me how to do the multiple quotes. Damnit, i've been here 5 years and i still have no clue. PM me or something. I just wanna partake in the novelty of multiquotes!

Multi-quote has been suggested, and I agree with that.
However, I like that people can't edit/delete posts. It creates kind of an accountability that wouldn't be there if people could edit their posts.
Search function could be improved, but from what I've heard from people in other threads, it would be a coding nightmare.
We also did have a different search function and everyone hated it.

Doesn't mean it is perfect... I do wish we could change up the quote system a little bit. So we can quote multiple people or pick out multiple things in one quote to address.

I like the NS layout more than most. The only other forum I go on is TSR. Their messgae boards look cumbersome, there's too many buttons, dates and numbers everywhere, you can't tell where sigs end and the next post begins etc.

Sometimes, the simplest ones are the best

You know this is an incredibly interesting discussion.

Yes - I will fully admit that the functionality of these forums are super basic. We've been completely conscious of this fact from the very beginning. NS is written absolutely from scratch and is totally custom. We have only ever built it to do the things that the community wants, and every time we bring up the forum issue (as you can see in this thread) for the most part people think we should stick with a basic set of features.

Now, one thing that NS does really do well, is integrate the forums with the rest of the site. Thats something that many of the forum packages (like VB) don't do very well.

I do also very much agree with the fact that our forums keep this place unique. They're designed to be simple and ultra fast. The GUI editor does suck - but if you turn that off you can post with lightning speed in here.

Search does suck, and we replaced the search with google and people hated it. So we switched back.

Are there improvements we should make? Sure! But Forums are only a portion of what make this site what it is, and we have been focusing on other development priorities with our resources for the last few years. Forums have barely gotten touched since about 2005 save some speed improvements, and various tweaks here and there.

What we've worked on is things like the pictures, videos, NSTV, reviews, news, navigation... etc. So its not like we're not developing, we're just not developing the forums.

All that aside though, I will again re-iterate the fact that the community hasn't wanted many of the features other forums have. We've offered to add post editing, and its always met with tonnes of resistance. So we don't add it - as hell I agree that a ton of the humour on here comes because once you click post, you're committed to what you said.

I think there are some tweaks we could make... it would be nice to have the ability to report a post, it would b e nice to have some email notification (if you want it)....

But overall the primary reason it doesn't get changed is because we do what the community wants. And the community likes the forums!

I agree with the OP, but only to an extent. I want to see more Web 2.0 features -- like a better GUI editor, HTML5 videos, and a better photo/video uploader and overall photo system. But I'm resigned to the fact that NS simply doesn't have those kind of development dollars.

i do too, and if there was both the google searchbar and the regular one i wouldn't complain too much.

Multi quotes/easier quote editing (like the [img]..[/img] tabs but with [quote]) would be super nice to see in the future :)
