Should a 13 year old kid climb Mt Everest?

So this kid is trying to make it to the top of Mt Everest in the next couple of weeks. I understand trying to be the youngest person to do something, but I think this is way too far. What do you guys think?

who the fuck are we to tell him he can't do it? If his legal guardians have said its alright and he knows the risks then he should go for it.

just read the book "peak" and its about a 13 year old who climbs it.
from a book based on a guys real life experiences, id assume its perfectly possible. with the right gear and instruction..

i read an article in outside magazine strongly opposed to this. it said that people who are in their 40s and 50s are the most adept at climbing high himalayan (above 8000 metre peaks) because their brains have developed to a point where they are able to practice critical decision making and abstract thought processes even with the lack of oxygen in the air, and 13 year old kids do not have this capability as their brains are not fully developed. he may be physically able to cope with the challenges, but if something goes wrong at 27, 000 feet he will not be able to cope or make intelligent decisions, which is not safe for himself nor the other climbers around him

I read about this kid in adventure magazine...if a 13 year old was ever going to climb Mt. Everest it would be him, but whether or not he should is another question. At that age its hard to tell whether or not its what the kid actually wants to do and if its not just his parents pushing him, even if he says they're not. Also, the teenage brain isn't fully developed which could lead to some poor decision making. Personally, I say no he shouldn't be doing it because he puts the people around him at more of a risk than an older person.

My thoughts exactly. This kid will end of being short roped down the mountain. Sure climbing Everest is kind of commercialized now, but its still pretty damn hard on the body and mind. A 13 year old is in no mental or physical shape to do that.

A couple of 15 year olds have summited Everest, so I guess 13 isn't that much younger. But you look at all of the young climbers who have actually summited and they are all sherpa. They have a huge amount to gain employment-wise through doing this and are much more accustomed to the altitude. Their making it to the top gives them an opportunity for a life they wouldn't be able to live otherwise.
This kid will get a lot of recognition if he makes it but there is no real need. He will live a perfectly comfortable life without this. I also feel like he would be very high risk. Not only is he putting himself into danger (which any climber is) he is putting those with him in serious danger. People are far more likely to endanger themselves for a little kid.
Is he physically capable? With sherpas ferrying all of his gear probably. If not I'm sure someone could drag him.
Should he? No

Sure we can't make the decision for him, but he probably didn't think "hmm do i really want to die at the tender age of 13 years old?" So much he hasn't experienced yet in life, i would wait a while if i were him.

here is my take.

we need to stop running other peoples lives. if this kid thinks he can do it, let him try?
kids will quit much easier than an adult would. if he couldnt breath, was dissy, damn if he had a stomach ache im sure he would quit. adults are the ones that end up climbing even when the bad weather is predicted and their oxygen is low and they cant see their hand in front of them.

the kid will, most likely, be fine.

How many NSers have done it? 89% of this site seems to be 13.

If he actually does it, I hope he rubs it in haters faces. All the same, human bodies change a lot between 13 and 20. I hope he at least doesn't die. His lawyer might not be able to get up there to sue the sherpa.

Considering your average joe can pay their way into climbing Everest with very little experience I'd say he'll be fine. He's probably in better health than half of the people heading up anyways.

He has already summated 5 of the 7 seven highest peaks and i think that with his preparations and willingness he is ready. He is far more mature mentally than other 13 year olds so i think he should go for it.

if hes already done 5 of 7 he can prby make it as long as his parents dont force it when its too dangerous, like tryig to do t for some record kinda reminds me of the little hercules kid his parents were crazy strict and made him do insane workouts and some people said it was child abuse and how he didnt have a childhood either way youtube it, shits insane

i have a friend whos twelve and climbed i believe 4 or of the highest and i believes he plans on doing everest in the next year or so

should 13 year olds be doing dub corks and hitting 100 foot jumps? if the kid is capable, and aware of the risk, why not? 13 is more than old enough to understand the dangers of such things.
