Not going to get into it since I'm pissed off right now about this.

What are you guys thought on underage drinking for military?

FYI, I'm 20 and almost been in 2 years.

i should ask my Brother as he is a Captain in the army, but uh underage drinking, it seems natural to me, ya know?  Anyone can turn a blind eye to a casual beer in a bar.  Jesus my religion prof. talks about beers and cigars all the time in class, so I doubt it would hurt a Cadette, or a private to drink one behind closed doors.  and just to promote it I made another stupid pile of crap ultimate edit.  http://www.youtube.com/user/bardman14#p/a/u/0/gI_jOx3mdbM

when i was at landstuhl in germany, they had this enormous billboard-sized sign with a big electric counter on one sign that read "Days since last alcohol related accident" while i was there it reached 22 days, and that was a new record.


isnt under-age drinking in the military non existed since those who are under 21 can legally drink in officer clubs anyways though?

It's very prevalent actually, and only a base commander can authorize a lower drinking age.  They rarely do though, and it's probably for the best that the military isn't given special favors when it comes to the law.  Not the kind of message and example to send to the public in my opinion.

alot of service members turn to alchohol and drugs to escape PTSD. however, they really aren't the answer (weed actually would probably help alot of people) People develop a dependency on stuff to make the PTSD go away, but when its time for them to re-adjust to normal life, they cant, because they havent been dealing with it properly and now they are both an alchaholic AND still have PTSD. really, the only good way to get over stuff like that is with a good de-briefing, catching psychological problems early on, and having a supportive family and possibly a counselor if its bad.

I still can't believe the US has a drinking age of 21. I'll be in the US for a couple of months over summer, and it'll be so weird being unable to drink, despite being allowed to for over 2 years at home.

It's strange that the state will let you lay down your life for it, and give you a rifle, and allow you to shoot at insurgents, but won't let you drink.

I guess drink as long as you're not going to get in shit for it, and it doesn't interfere with duties.

to the person up there ^ who said the military having special acceptions to laws was not good, its kind of too late. i've got freinds in the military as MP's and as marines and when we get pulled over they show the officer their military ID and immediatley get off of anything they where doing with a warning and then a thank you for your service have a nice evening.

Lower drinking age usually also prevents hooliganism and drunken disorderly behaviour from kids at night: in Copenhagen all the kids could go to bars at 16, so there were no drunk underage kids wreaking havoc in public parks and elsewhere. I can only see good things coming from a lower drinking age. Because you're allowed to drink legally during high school years, it should prevent the "let's get drunk to be cool" kind of gangs and binge drinking, underage rape.. you name it. Having the limit at 21 is fucking preposterous. I mean, you can drive at 16, but then wait 5 years to legally drink. C'mon now.

When they are getting shot at almost on a daily basis, watching friends die around them constantly, and in general basically being spit on by a lot liberal douchebag hipster ninkempoops so I think guys that are 18, 19, or 20 asking to be able to have a beer isn't too much to fucking ask.

Go back to smoking the reefer dddduuuudddeeee on your mommy and daddy's trust fund.

So we numb them instead of actually getting at the deep psychological trauma that they're experiencing? Good plan....

And why should soldiers get special treatment? They are doing a job they signed up for. I think it is too much to ask to completely change the rules just because some people feel entitled to it. Soldiers aren't better then the common citizen, no matter how often they tell themselves that they are.

I never said drown them in booze. I fail to see what is so bad about letting the 18 and 19 and 20 year old troops enjoy a beer with friends before shipping out or while on leave with friends.

I can see how for PTSD purposes, alcohol is not the answer.

All I have to say cause I don't want to make an ass out of myself getting all pissed about this.

The other night, I got my ass chewed for drinking a beer on our last night in Korea, it's just fucking stupid. I've been getting trashed and having a good time the last 9 months there without leadership getting mad so whatever. It's all good. I turn 21 in August, no worries.

Exactly. You're going to do it anyway. Just like every other highschool and underage college kid. But just because people feel entitled to drink alcohol at their age, doesn't mean it should be allowed.

So what you are saying is that the government should between your mind and your body. although you or i may not agree with what people put into their bodies, "protecting" people from themselves through use of force is inherently immoral. and far be it for us to attempt to stop them through, especialy as these things do no harm to anybody else. also if its right for the government to tell us we should not do drugs / drink until a certain age. why is it not right to make it illegal for people to eat unhealthy, smoke, not excerise, or even go SKIING (which is a very risky activity) and unfortunately you are correct; thats not how the world works, everyone likes to interfere with other peoples lives for the sake of "morality". which is exactly why we have the "drug war" which funds criminal organizations by artificialy inflating the price of what would normaly be a dirt cheap commodity. which unlike drug use is not a victimless crime. the murder victim of a drug related drive by is completely innocent, while someone who has made the choice to destroy his life with drug abuse is not, that was his choice. btw very mature of you to call me "dumb", really opened my eyes.

Did you know that at one point 21 used to be the maturity age for a man? Why is that? Who said that at this or that age this person shall now be of sound body and mind to make all encompassing decisions about his life?

We as intelligent beings are starting to understand the individual and societal consequences of our actions. We are beginning to understand the biological and neurological effects that certain substances are having on our bodies. But let's ignore all that progress and say do whatever the fuck you want at 18. Makes total sense.

And 'dumb' was entirely appropriate in this situation. This is the internet, the very antithesis of maturity.

so since we can never know when we are mature enough to run our own lives we should let the government run it for us. and you clearly didn't read my post if you think i was encouraging drug use. we cannot stop drug use through legislation. don't you think its kind of funny how cigarette use has dropped drastically since we started educating people of its effects, yet drug use has not changed since implemented this barbaric policy of legislating ones own body. information/education > purely barbaric force. also half decently educated humans understand very well what drugs can do to us. but maybe your right, and we should let the state/ beurocrats run our lives as according to you we're unfit to do it ourselves, because taking away peoples freedom in the name of "safety" has worked out so well through out history.

Honestly man it is what it is, I'm not going to stop my underage buddies from having a good time, I'm going to stop them from making a complete ass out of them selfs though...Should it be enforced that 18-20 year old military members sholud drink? I dont know, I'm not a decision  maker. It just seems like a catch 22. btw I'm 20 and in the military.

You can't deny that." and when you say askew, i hope you count in every fucking atrocity commited against mankind; slavery, genocide, millions of nonviolent offenders and their families that have had their lives ruined because they possessed some drug. all in the name of "protection" and "morality" the role of law is to penilazie people for using force or fraud against another, nothing else. anyway im too fucking tired for this shit today; im done. i just cannot see how someone can be against personnal freedom.

i'll be 21 in three months so if anyone should know how it is to want a beer but not be able to have one its me. i do drink a little bit. and i have discussed this same question with people who are 23 - 25 and i have not gotten a solid answer from anyone.

Slavery and genocide don't have shit to do with sociological jurisprudence. That's more common law. And yeah, the drug war would be one of the mistakes.

But ever hear of integration? Ever wonder why it happened? It's because some judges had the forethought to realize that they could change society for the better with their decisions.

but you don't realize how many problems european countries have with young drinkers. i had to do a report on it and alcohol related violence is becoming a bigger and bigger issue. they are actually raising the drinking age in many countries to 18. also, you can only buy beer at a certain age and then when you get older you are able to buy liquor.

It's pretty much right on par, based on our estimates - at least in areas where there aren't dry counties and such...
