Second Monitor for editing?

So this question is pretty out there, but if I am filming in 1080p, but my laptop is not 1080p, would you recommend getting like a 24" 1080p HDTV to edit with?

It's kind of hard to put what I am thinking into words, but will editing on a non 1080p monitor be a bad idea or mess it up in some way?

no that wont fuck it up. it just wont display all 1080 lines. theres no need buying another monitor. quality will be fine dont worry

While it's certainly not necessary, it definitely can't hurt, especially depending on the resolution of your monitor. Laptops with displays on the lower res end often just don't have enough pixels to show everything you might want to see in your NLE. When I'm working off my laptop I always hook up to my 28" or 21" monitor depending on what I've got with me. The low res just cramps the program far too much for my liking. When I'm on my desktop I edit on a single 28" and output to either a 32" 720p (I typically shoot 720p) HDTV or my 21" monitor for review. More resolution is always handy.

anyways, if your computer and bank account can handle it, it doesnt hurt to have a second monitor, last year i did all of my computer science classwork on a dual monitor setup, or any other classwork i did haha. its not always necessary, but it is often easier to multitask, or work on one thing more efficiently.

i cant give you any opinions from a video editing standpoint, but i have done a very minimal amount of photo work, along with doing assignments and researching/writing papers, and it can either make you much more efficient, or make you procrastinate 100 times worse, depending on how hard and focused you feel like being.

if you can afford it. get another monitor for sure. dual monitors are my favorite thing for multi tasking in and out of editing. with editing it just allows your work space to be much larger and allows for a larger resolution view of your edit as you go. personally i have my 15 inch MBP and a 19 inch shit samsung external. I put the video that will be the edit on my macbook pro screen cause of higher res than my monitor. but my external monitor has the time line and the preview screen and clip choices in FCP. its great really. i love the dual monitors for editng and i couldnt see myself going back to single screen unless i was traveling or something

yeah 2 monitors are sick. when im not editing its realllyyy great to have iTunes up on the second monitor so it doesnt clutter up ur main desktop plus is easy to access.

you dont even need to know how to edit to have a second monitor. second monitors are a necessity for anyone that knows how to navigate even the simplest things such as interwebs and homeworkz

the first shot you have the wu tang logo......i dont have time now but later i might count the amount of back to back fs 270s from your right foot forward, thats all your edit is with the occasional fs 450 with right foot forward, and then you guys change it up with a bs 270 right foot foward...for a 5 minute edit

That is my setup right now. Laptops (not macbooks) aren't the greatest for editing. They often struggle with effects and switching between files in the timeline never mind doing that across two screens. Your money is better spent buying a desktop or better camera or something else. It really depends on the hardware you are staring out with

Your laptop might be able to put out 1080p to an external screen. What type of laptop is it and does it support HDMI or DVI?

ya.. well i just updated and created a second partion on my HDD and have been using Ubuntu for any programming and HTML/javascript but over all i think that the amount of stuff that an Open Source OS can so is absolutely awesome.

i know kids that are fairly well educated in computers and they think  that any distribution of linux is bullshit but if you do any programming i think that is almost a must to install(or create another partion on your HDD for your programming)

i also do any but not much file sharing on Ubuntu becuse of the ease of proxy addresses and lack of malicious code for linux


but my over all impression was good. i was a little surprised when i saw that the close/minimize/maximize buttons on the left like Mac OS

And they moved the buttons to the left cause there putting other stuff on the right in 10.10...
