Egg Drop Project

Ok. I have to do this thing for science class. Around a week to complete it. Have any of you out there done this project? If so what was a design that worked for you guys? I was thinking about having an egg, surrounded by some cushion layer, inside a can of some sort. THen the can surrounded by another layer and then inside a cardboard box. All of this is attached to a parachute...any ideas?

oh fuck ya man we did this at camp.... theres many ways, though we had only certain materials to do it with... blow up two ziploc bags and put tissue paper in-between them and pop the egg in there... also duct tape the outside so the ziploc bags stay together.... eh i think that workeddd

put a ton of TP around the egg, then duct tape the around the TP, and then all in a cardboard box of towels, with the egg about 3/4 the way to the top attached to a parachute. thats how i won the comp in 6th grade

we had something similar, but we had to make ours into a car that would go down a steep ramp and hit the wall, basically, use lots of soft padding, sponges work well

we could only use newsprint and tape, I rolled the paper to made a box for the egg and stuffed that with paper. Then I rolled a lot more paper into tubes and attached them in every direction on the box to absorb the impact no matter which side it lands on. I think we dropped them 4 stories and mine worked. It also looked like a third grader did it, the spines make it look like a huge mess. You could also attach streamers to it to slow it down.

what doesnt work are rocket ship shaped things with water in them. I had a briliant idea to use the water to slow the egg and cousion it... and it would have worked if they didnt throw it off the roof of the school with a hardcore spin. but styrofoam cups work, so does jellow in a solid containter, if you get the egg in the middle of the jello.

i did it at a science camp once. We were on teams and my team made a 'ship' to hold a smaller box that we had the egg in. It worked really good but the teachers wouldn't let us use the 'ship' for all of our eggs. So most of them crashed and died. The team that one taped balloons all over their boxes. That worked cause it slowed the box down and it was soft. Then they had a bunch of parachutes. They were fags though.

we had to do one in 10th grade out of only a few toothpicks, rubber bands and drinking straws. we threw them off the gym room to the pavement

I had to do this a few months ago...

We had requirements though. We got 1 paper dixie cup, 1 plastic bag (like the walmart shopping bag things), ~35 cm of masking tape, ~35 cm of string, and 5 plastic drinking straws. We cut up the straws and put them around the inside edge of the cup so that the egg wasn't touching the side of the cup. We put some of the plastic bag in the bottom, and some more of it on top and then used the leftover straw scraps to make like a lid for the cup. Then we used the rest of the bag and the string to make a parachute. Fell 5 or so meters and didn't break.

Great ideas. The only sort of guidlines I have are that it has to be made out of recyclable products and be 30cm x 30cm x 30 cm. And it has to be able to get the egg in and out with a max of 2 mins for inspection after every drop.

my bro did this a year or so ago and competed. some people filled garbage cans with jello and put it in there. haha. i would fill a garbage can will packing peanuts (styrofoam peanuts for shipping stuff) and put the egg inside it wrapped in bubble wrap. would be a cool mess and would work.

search google.com, thats how i do all of my shit like that, teachers all over the world do this project, i did in 8th grade, they make sites and shit, college professors galore, the paper bag thing works pretty well, just dont u popsicle sticks, too heavy

I did this, and mine was indestructible. Cut up a bunch of sponges into really small bits, then put an egg amidst a bunch of them. Duct tape it into a ball and wrap that ball with bubble wrap. This way kicks ass.

If you suspend it in a structure with elastics, but the structure isn't big enough, and the bands are too big/long, the egg will smash the inside of the structure and crack.

30X30 and recyclable gives you a lot to work with. I'd be worth it to find out if stuff like Mono expanding insulating sealant foam is recyclable, because that could work quite well as a filler. Then a soft outer layer and a soft inner layer between the foam and the egg should solve your problem.

haha, i remember this project. when we did it, our plan failed on the first attempt, so we just dropped our eggs all at once. we could only use tape, newspaper, and toothpicks, and we tried to cushion the egg in mounds of paper, and inside the mound we supported the egg on the toothpicks that were sticking through laterally. we forgot about the egg moving anywhere but down, and it didnt work at all. so we just dropped the other eleven eggs as close to the cars in the parkinglot as we could with a sheet of newspaper underneath them but not attached. it was fun.

You seem to have the right approach. When I did it, we did what you are planning, but built a frame around the outside of it and suspended the box w/ bungees from the frame for even more cushion.

we have to do that for physics II in high school, except we had to have the top and bottom of the egg exposed, and make it bungee jump from the ceiling, and had to make it come within 3 cm from the floor. it was tough, but we did it.

When I did mine, I put it in a plastic container filled with bubble wrap and some newspaper. It withstood the impact with flying colours.

i did that. make a big wing (triangle) and a little cockpit for the egg. then put streamers coming off the big wing for extra wind resisitance. think b-2 bomber

i put it in a thing of marshmellow fluf and threw it out a 5 story window and it worked. it only takes like 30 seconds to put together but you have to go buy a whole thing of fluf
