Cost of living in America

I finish college in a month and am doing a season this coming winter, hopefully in North America somewhere as everything just looks so much better!  Is the cost of living particularly expensive in America? 

I'm looking to do a 3 month season and am trying to budget for it you see.

depends on where you live.  if you want to live in nyc it will be very expensive.  if you want to live in a small apartment in colorado, it will probably be pretty cheap.  and that depends on where you are moving from as well.  i stil live with my parents though so i am a bad resource

IM guessing your thinking about living close to skiing- 3 months of good food is ay around 600+

rent and other shit- unknown- it all depends -location location location

in general, the northeast is the most expensive, followed by the west, and the south is the cheapest. but just like anywhere, you can find real cheap places by the real expensive places. in upper saddle river, nj, the median house cost 1.2 million, and in paterson, a city less than 15 miles away, the median house value is 150,000.

its all about where you live.

if you live in a shit hole in SD it wont cost much.

if you live in LA or NYC it will cost more.

IMHO out of the "ski towns" or whatever you wanna call them. SLC is really reasonable. however its not really a ski town per say.

dude if he wants to move to the u.s. that means that he DOES NOT live in the u.s.

now with that said, there may be a slim chance, and this would be insane even to consider, that his first language is not english.  if i was from france i might spell mouououoaueaaeuntains instead of mountains.

Utah, $800 bucks a month in ogden will have you living like a king. SLC is a little more pricey, but the nightlife is worth it. the suburbs in between are chill, with the exception of kaysville and farmington.

but in a response to the OP, a lot of things will be cheaper compared to the UK. when i was in ireland this summer, advertisements for british services/goods on tv were ridiculous compared to the states.

so i wanna do something similar as the OP. but i am talking about US and canada as a whole. and only the famous resorts, with a better-than-decent combination of backcountry & park like i would imagine whistler.

are these "ski-towns" as expensive as they seem to be?

Generally, any of the places in the Rocky mountain range (Colorado, Utah, ect.) will be much better than the Sierra Nevadas (your california mountains). As far as cost of living goes, in either of the areas you are gunna have your cheap places and your ritzy expensive as fuck places. If you plan on skiing at some of the big name resorts, I would suggest that you live a fair distance away, because places like Vail and Aspen, or Heavenly and Squaw if you end up in Cali, are millionaire's playgrounds.
One more piece of advice. When you come here, no matter where you end up living, you at least need to hit up Vail once. I know that a lot of NS will disagree with me on that, but the way I see it, you can be a park rat at just about any mountain in the world, so why waste your time in the parks when you are traveling somewhere new. The back bowls in vail are hands down the most fun I have ever had skiing. Get your season pass somewhere else though, because there are much better places for partying after the lifts stop running.

To be honest, if you're moving to experience a new country, CA might be the best state to go to. You have the coast, great ski areas, and so much more.

Are you planning to work or just ski?

If your just finishing uni you can bag yourself a student visa through BUNAC, but id be quick about it stuff like this goes quickly. They are more avaliable than the normal ones and are unlimited as long as your a student. This will be for Canada, if they are any left, as the ones for the US are only for summer jobs, and for four months. Canadian ones are 12 months.

If it was me and I was just skiing I'd do either Mammoth, Tahoe-area, Oregon, Utah or Colorado, havnt been to any of them but they all have sick areas to go ski.

Iv spent the past 2 seasons in Canada and its awesome I'd really recommend it. If it was me I'd go to Interior BC, spent the past season there and there's a ton of resorts offering everything you could want. If you got a pass to Silverstar then you can ski Big White with the same pass too, both have pretty sick terrain and really good parks. Revelstoke is close for some gnar ganr as well. That would be my top pick and you could get a job to help fund yourself or carry on out there for the rest of the 12 months and see the rest of the country rather than blowing your stash in the states.

I spent a lot of time in tahoe this year, and met a lot of people who live real cheap. Although the snow is not as good as CO or Utah, Lake Tahoe is sick cause of the fact that there are like 8 mountains all in an hour driving range. Places like Kings Beach as 15 minutes from northstar, squaw, alpine, boreal- which have good good terrain and good parks. Down south you have heavenly, kirkwood, sierra, all sick mountains relatively close to each other. Also, Cali is warmer than CO, and kings beach is sick (hint the beach). +, casino's and parties are infamous in the area,if you like that stuff. If you find a friend or two, your cost of living will be nothing. Even if u don't, you can meet people to move in w/ you, give rides to the mountains, sick safeway (food shopping) in truckee, it's a nice environment. As for skiing, northshore i would recommend northstar for park and squaw for real skiing on REAL MOUNTAINS. South Shore i would say heavenly & kirkwood, but sierra is a fun little resort hidden by the wind on those bad days. If you have any questions about Cali hit me up.

you can live in utah for extremely less than this.

i live in salt lake, pay $200 a month for rent and about $50ish a month for utilities. i filled up my car about once every two weeks or so which came in at about $40. my food budget is limited to $50 max a week and i shop at whole foods for fucks sake, and make some delicious meals.

granted, my rooms pretty small and i pay $50 less than my other roomates, but its pretty hard to find a place if you're living with roomates for over $400 a month.

SLC's the cheapest, cottonwood heights is even better if you're not going to school and just looking to be shreddin big and little cottonwood for the season. i have a friend in boston who pays $1200 a month on her pretty piss poor shape place and i make fun of her all the time that the one month she lives there i can live for five months.
