Camera Question

So for this summer/next ski season, I'm looking for a camera. I'd like something bigger with a handle.
But anyhow I was trying to decide between a slightly used Canon GL2 for $1000 or a brand new Canon Vixia HF S100 for $850. The only debate I'm having is Gl2 isn't HD and the other is. The GL2 does come with a HD Opteka mini deathlense which is perfect. Will a HD lense be the same quality as just a regular HD camera?

an HD lens will not make the camera magically become HD

GL2 is like 10 years old, don't waste your money.

No HD lenses don't make your camera film in HD.

If you're choosing between those, go for the one that isn't the GL2

Well I have lots of friends who film (one with a DVX) I'm sure I'd figure out how to use it and they could help.
What is so bad about the GL2? I've seen plenty of videos filmed with one and they seem decent. What would you reccomend that I could find used for around 1000-1300 with better quality image. (or something new)

lots of people have issues eith it usually around bad colors and if u want something that old, go with real film the canon t2i with a wide angle or fisheye and the included kit lens would be perfect and well inside your budget even with all those not so little extras like memory cards, a handle, a tripod, a flash/ video light...

No I don't want an old camera. I didn't know the GL2 was so outdated...
Please give me suggestions, something I can get a fisheye or deathlense for (much nicer for skatebording) I would like it to be HD or at least something with good quality image.

DVX + fisheye will be on the higher end around 1200 and that will give you good quality. Look around DVXuser.com in the marketplace, there are usually some going for around your budget.

If you don't really know much about photography, don't bother with the t2i, there are definite loop holes and problems that you have to be able to work around. It's not super hard to learn but it takes time. With that you could get kit for $900 and buy a fisheye PHOTOGRAPHY lens on ebay for around $250-300, right in your budget.

You definitely also want to spend a chunk of change on a tripod as well regardless of what you buy. Having a good tripod is SO important to have. You buy cheap - you buy twice.

an HV30/40 or the HF series might also be good for you, they have good quality and a good entry price range, and then you could spend the extra on a good tripod, memory, handle, and that lens.

If your gonna get really into editing, you may not want to get an hfs100. Unless you have a really new computer, it slows the computer down, and is hard to edit because of its AVCHD recording format. Plus with the AVCHD, the filesare huge, so it takes longer to do everything. But if you do have a nice computer, I'd say go for it, it does put out great footy.

Yeah get the HFS100, in fact, get MY HFS100. Its only been used 5 times and comes with lots of stuff including a fisheye!

Did i just read a reply that said the t2i was "real film"?  Fuck.  hahahahah.  So funny.

Why reccomend a DSLR when the dude clearly doesn't know much about cameras (no offense).  I'm just amazed at this site.  Unless you really plan on taking time to setup your camera and learn it.....go with some Canon consumer HD camera.  Best bang for your buck.  If you want to learn a camera then I have some other suggestions.

Stay away from the GL2...and for 1000 bucks?!  Hahhahahaha you can buy a DVX for less than that these days.  HD lense....hahahhhahah.  Oh newschoolers.......

Ya I don't know much about cameras, which is why I am asking for help. And I've looked up many videos of people shooting with a HFS100 and the image is nice and crisp so I believe that is the camera I'm gunna buy

I'm glad you are staying away from the GL2.  Good choice.  What is your editing setup/ computer?  It's important because AVCHD is known to be pretty brutal.......

I have a Compaq flat screen. I'm getting a laptop in around month and a bit. Which is when I'm getting the cam. Also I'm not buying the GL2 but what is so bad about it?

like milos said above...ITS 10 years OLD...out of date. records to tapes. non hd (not really important). But the ONLY and i mean ONLY SD camera i would get would be dvx-100. but it sounds like you are no where near qualified for that so get that 850 one or something that you said.

Yeah dont get the gl2, just go with a HFS100. If your computer is slow, just get neoscene to convert the AVCHD files..

So you guys know I'm new with cams and shit. Well when I get the cam, I want a long lasting battery. I saw some 6 hour lasting batteries on amazon.com and stuff but what should I do?

thats a stupid question...no the slightly higher quality glass in the fisheye will not change the hardware in your camera making it HD...it wont make a difference at all. its an opteka lens. even when it says HD, it still will actually drop quality for u. i think best bet is going with the HF. awesome camera if u know how to use it. take the extra money and buy ur own fisheye with it

Yeah I'd recommend the HV40 - it's one of the cheaper looking full HD cameras around at the moment I think. I previously owned one for a while before I traded it in for the t2i

Thanks man I will probably consider something like that for next year but I've decided to go with the Vixia HFs100. Cheaper, good quality and I can learn to fully use my camera. Thanks though +k

I have a canon hf200, and the video quality is decent, but the real plus about it is it fits in my pocket, so it's very covenient, it doesn't really have any manual controls which sucks, but with a fisheye and a handle it's good and easy to use
