I wouldnt even consider the T1i when the T2i is out...
Both have similar iso ranges, no in camera autofocus, and are crop sensor cameras
The T1i and D5000 also have similar video:
D5000 has 720 24fps
T1i has 720 30fps, the 1080 has 20fps which is shit
they both are a great beginner cam and the video is an awesome thing to use on the side
as far as the body, I like the Nikon so much more, which is why I ended up getting the D5000, if you are interested in filming at all, the swivel screen sounds gay, but makes it so much easier to followcam (if you dont have a glidecam), and hold the cam at other angles.
Video stabilization is a must. As soon as I get the cash I am getting a glidecam. The video is always shaky unless the camera is completely still, sometimes the footage is even warped
heres an example of a quick edit shot with the D5000 kit lens with no stabelization or post production color enhancement:
also, the kit lens is a piece of shit, I also have the 55-200 vr which not the sharpest or nicest lens, but the combination of the kit and 55-200 is showing me what lengths I usually shoot at and some that I dont, so I can build a quality kit in the future. After a couple beginner lenses, don't skimp on future glass, you get what you pay for.
