HELP: commands on mac are not working!

i know this is not really a media/arts type thing but i dont know what to do! someone must have a Black macbook from like 08 i think? and the commands at the top like F1,F2,F3.... so on are not working. i recently got a mac wireless key board and i think that screwed up my commands bc they dont work on that either.
the commands on my mac are different layout on the wireless key board, for example, F5 is to increase the volume on the mac, and F12 is the increase the volume on the wireless key board...
If anyone knows anything! about how to fix this that would help me out alot!!

press fn + f5 or whatever.. does that work?

system prefs > keyboard > uncheck the first box that says use all F keys as standard functions > then go to amazon.com > search for mac for dummies > purchase.

Its a simple problem man, and it'll only help you to know how to use your mac.
