Getting into photography

When I was traveling in USA recently I took a lot of photos and found it really fun. I was just using a cheap point and shoot so the photos were not that great. I am thinking I want to upgrade to something a little better.

From doing some basic research it looks like most people think the Canon Rebel Xsi is a pretty good camera. What other cameras out there are similar which I should check out? Are any of these going to be limiting down the track?

I should note that i know nothing about photography, but I am going to learn.

Also- i know dslr cameras are not small, but since i travel a lot, something on the smaller end would be better probably.

A rebel would be a great camera for you to learn on, It has enough features for you to learn on but also has an easy interface to deal with. Having interchangeable lens mount will be good and allow you to expand and explore your options in photography. If you do go and buy additional lenses, try to avoid buying ef-s mount lenses. These lenses are specifically designed for the smaller sensor (where the light is absorbed by the camera) used in the rebel and other crop sensor cameras, and cannot be used on larger and full frame sensor cameras (these full frame sensors are equal to the size of 35mm film). If you are looking to continue into photography and may one day end up owning a full frame camera, you want your lenses to be able to carry over to your new camera (because optics last longer than the bodies, and are more important).

Why do you want an SLR? The only thing you mentioned was image quality and portability. Get a good quality compact camera that you can take anywhere and spend the savings on more travel.

Canon G10, Canon S90, Panasonic LX3, check those out.

sony hx1 smaller than an slr Has all the manual modes and a pretty decent auto 1080p 30fps 10 shot burst up to 10fps super cool panorama mode-hard to explain 28-560mm lens (35mm equivalent) with a $20 adapter you can use other lenses-i have an opteka fisheye for mine and i think its down to $399 and last time i went to best buy they had 8 gig mark 2 cards for $35

I have the Nikon d5000, good camera for general photography....isnt the smallest camera, but a good one/exchangable lenses etc...... and you may want to upgrade in the future if you get more into it. also the Kodak z10 is a good portable camera that also takes clear pictures.
