Going to law school in the states is a great way to waste 3 years and 100k, and be unemployed. If you can't get into a top 20 school, imo there's no point in even bothering.

Doctor is 2 more years than lawyer. Also, doctors won't lose pay because they have one of the most stressful jobs on the planet. Also, your arguments are invalid. Everybody loves the doctor that removes the tumor that would have killed them.

Defense attorney makes bank if you are defending businesses. If you're in criminal defense you make skeet for money.

depends on what you want in life. becoming a doctor is a helluva lot of work. With the future uncertain, with doctors constantly being sued over nothing, and the changing healthcare field who knows what life as a doc will be like so if you do it do it because it is what interests you. Im in med school now and let me tell you being in $250k debt right off the bat blows.
Sure would have been nice if they had some malpractice and student loan stuff in this new bill.

but i could never be a lawyer too much stuff i dont like.

Actually I am going to be a doctor, but close guess. Have fun not getting into Harvard, and even if you do cause of legacy, enjoy the enormous debt you will be in afterwards. Also you really have no idea what your getting yourself into do you.

you can become whatever the fuck you want, but if you do become a lawyer, and you ever sue a ski resort, the freeskiing community will find you and shove something big, metal, and either ribbed, spiked, serrated, or all three up your ass.

Just fyi, I had been considering law for quite some time; it wasn't until recently when I decided it was not for me when I learned more about the process and lifestyle of becoming a lawyer. So I really have nothing against Lawyers, as 2 months ago I was planning on being one.

Taken from a law school thread on a poker forum I visit frequently:

No need to be an asshat--I'm just trying to spread the word to people who don't hear it often enough. I wish the same had been done for me when I was a 1L. It's much better for law students to get a sense of the misery many lawyers experience now than when the time actually arrives. I don't assume everyone would hate being a lawyer, but I can tell you that I have a strong suspicion most lawyers would do it over again if they could. As crazy as this might sound, working 2200 hours a year, having multiple deadlines and multiple clients to worry about every moment of every day, being part of a profession that is adversarial in nature and whose organizational structures are often rigid hierarchies, and rarely ever having a single day of the weekend where you don't need to do work is not everyone's cup of tea. Oh yeah, and your legal education isn't far from being a total waste of $--have fun arriving at work and realizing you have no idea how to be of any practical use to anybody and won't for some time.

A lot of friends ask me about my thoughts on whether they should attend law school, and I always recommend that they don't. It is nearly impossible to get jobs right now, even for students at t10 schools, of which I am an alum. It will be a very long time for the vast majority of law students to find themselves in a comfortable financial situation. I graduated college with no debt, and I will still be paying $2K+/month over the next 7 years to pay off my law school debt. That is taking a very significant chunk out of my salary. Law students have a kind of blissful ignorance about the plight they've committed themselves to. I would know, because I was in the same boat not long ago. Believe it or not, I actually like my firm quite a bit--the people are great, I am being given a lot of responsibility, and the work tends to be interesting. Though I hate the legal profession generally, I have it a lot better than friends at other biglaw firms who are stuck working the same number of hours doing 50 state surveys for partners who don't know their names. As much as I like my job at times, any enjoyment is mitigated by the fact that it leaves no room whatsoever for a life. Nor do I think it ever will. I will be working 6+ hours both days this weekend. This is normal. The bottom line is, if you value time more than money, you've signed up for the wrong profession. I know I screwed up, and I trust plenty of law students posting in this thread know what they're getting into. But, in my experience, most do not, and it is better to figure out now what to expect than wait until it hits you in the face.

^Does that really sound enjoyable to you, it seems there is a lot of ignorance on what people expect law school to be. But seriously dude you come off as a huge fucking prick. So I am sure you will be a good lawyer.

Both are extremely smart paths to choose from.. I would love to be a lawyer because I LOVE arguing and I'm pretty good at it even if I know I'm wrong hahahaha... But my original degree was in health care because and as gay as it sounds I think there is something rewarding with going home everyday knowing you really helped someone out although I did change my major because I'm not really a science type but regardless doctor would be a very good career.

It does, I'm in the department I want (corporate / tax) but nervous because Canada's system is different from the US for new recruits. The bar is different in every province. Where I'm working (Alberta) it involves a series of units where you have to complete assignments on various areas of the law. No one fails, but it's extra work when you're also working on stuff for the firm, so it's stressful. The other thing is that everywhere in Canada, you can't just pass the bar, you have to do essentially a paid apprenticeship for a year, called articling, which pays about 20% less than a first year associate makes (still more money than my parents ever made though). Depending on the economy and the firm's needs, a certain proportion of people who article at a firm are hired back as first year associates. Lately hirebacks have been pretty awful, so that's also stressful, though my firm has actually done a pretty good job. I'm just hoping I get hired back at the end and it's going to be a lot of work to put myself in a good position to do that. Big firms like ours are pretty stratified and political which can be a pain so it's about putting yourself in a good position and having the right people want you to stay on at the end of the year. It'll be interesting but yknow, it is what it is.

this is probably pretty accurate. a lot of this applies to graduate school and i'm sure medical school as well. i actually have 3 close friends going to lawschool. not heard good things from any of them. but whether or not its worth it depends on the person. i see their futures ending up very differently.

1) Smartest kid I know. Typical asian but with an outgoing personality. Really one of the funniest people I know. Straight A's thru highschool, extracurriculars up his ass, Harvard graduate now at University of Chicago, one of the top lawschools in the nation. His future looks very bright. Basically i'm sure he can do whatever the fuck he wants when he graduates. That must be nice. We all joke he will become commissioner of the nfl someday. Seems possible.

2) ROTC guy. Enrolled in law school at Gonzaga pursuing JAG. Pretty sure that's a marginal school but with his unique miltary background his future may also be bright. I suspect his life will also suck though. He hates the military, why he signed up for ROTC I have no idea. Military will be his career as he postponed service to go to lawschool (which they might have paid for, not sure). Either way he pretty much owes his life to the US Army now. No backing out now.

3) Good, but not great student at a state school now attending University of Kansas, another marginal lawschool. Very personable guy, but I do not expect him to get a job easily and he will be saddled with enormous debt. i'm not sure why he decided to go to be honest as he didn't seem too keen on being a lawyer. Probably a prototypical, "maybe I'll go to lawschool" person


I bounced around a bunch in college. I was a chemical engineer initially but hated it so I switched into biology and was considering medicine. For various reasons I then decided to pursue graduate school and suffice it to say I didn't really know what I was getting into either. It's really hard to know completely. I don't hate it, but there's often times when I think I need a new fucking career. Shit is frustrating as all hell and at this point I'm not sure I see a light at the end of the tunnel. One advantage of graduate school is that they pay you so if you decide it was a mistake, you only lost 7 years of your life rather than time+$100K. One disadvantage is you don't piss out money when you graduate. You are just like every other shmuck, but you can make people call you Dr. I see a lot of people around me frankly with no plans, no futures. Gradschool is not yet competitive enough to weed out people who just coast. So if you do it, do it right. A PhD by itself means fuck all.

The point is if you are gonna do something don't half ass it. There are a ton of marginal doctors, marginal lawyers, marginal scientists, marginal everything. For certain professions, if you are lucky you can be marginal and still make bank. Others you are just another asshole with an overpriced piece of paper. It seems that every profession is becoming a lot more competitive and a lot less glamorous. Such is life I suppose.

Don't make stereotypes of doctors. Just because your a doctor doesn't mean your a stuck up prick, they save people's lives if you haven't noticed.

As for the OP i would say Lawyer just because it's less school and more money in some occasions.

Pretty much. What it is is you do all the work a first year associate would do, but you do it through a principal, who is an associate at the firm. In other words, you are the agent of your principal, who obviously is the agent of the client. In other other words, I do lawyer work but if I screw it up, I don't get sued or brought up on professional ethics charges. Which is nice because I don't necessarily know what I'm... um... doing.

Yeah it's pretty much the same as south of the border in terms of the work you do, it's just that you're not liable for your actions. Lawyers generally need to carry a shit ton of liability insurance (through the firm) and are very vulnerable to having a complaint filed with the law society for everything from lying to opposing counsel to not filing a form on time. Happily, we don't have to deal with that for the first year, but it's still stressful trying to get hired back. It's not necessarily a permanent position if you do of course, you can still be axed if the firm decides to tighten its belt later on and you're expendable, or the economy goes into a double dip recession and there isn't enough work to go around. Thankfully Blakes is one probably the best positioned firm in the country right now (if not we're in the top 3) so the odds are better for me than for others.

Just because you are successful doesn't mean you are happy. Id rather be a happy ski bum making enough to get by then a stressed out lawyer or doctor working 6 days a week and a couple nights. Have fun spending the best years of your life in school, you only live once. That being said if being a lawyer or doctor makes you happy then go for it. Way too many people are choose their professions purely on how much money they make.

^He later said he was kidding and going to UC, not Harvard. Going to H-law doesn't guarantee you a good career by a long shot, you need to be in the top 1/4 of the class, really, to get your shot. That said at least it's not a waste of time like 90% of law schools in the USA. I actually DO have Harvard Law on my resume... not from going there though, I just did securities research for a prof there for a thing he's writing with a prof from here.

1- expensive schools like harvard will not result in debt they will result in much more money so long as you don't drop out, you are a fucking retard whoever said that

2- whoever said doctors will never lose pay, the goal of health care reform is to limit the amount of money that can be made in the industry.

lol this thread is a imaginary pissing contests. Kids are saying that what I am going to be is better than what you are going to be.



Bottom line, if you go to college, get a mechanical engineering degree. This is the best degree out there, it puts you on the top of the list for med school or law school, gives you a great technical base, teaches you how to study and discipline yourself, and also is 100% employable just by its self. I cringe when people do pre-law or pre-med. You have to learn all that stuff over again and you just made it so that if you don't decide to go med of law school you are screwed. Everyone should get a mechanical engineering degree in my opinion, then you can take that and do whatever you want.

People are still going to be getting sick in 4 years. Healthcare reform is not going to cause "little money," trust me if your a doctor, physical therapist, etc your going to have the same income now in the future. Even if there is some drop in $ involved, its gonna be safe to say if your doctor your going to live comfortably.

just saying, we'll see what happens. I know several doctors who are retiring in the near future because it's already affecting them. In fact, most of the medical department at my GF's school, and at her clinical hospital, are bullshit over the reform.
