So a buddy of mine is hanging up his carving sticks and wants to get something a bit more like what I ride and you guys ride.

I've been hucking fat skis for a while so it's like watching a beginner ski - you think @What's stopping them just opening up and fall line@. I don;t want to recommend something I'd be a happy with because to me a 120mm is fine even.

So what bridging ski do you recommend that will take him from carving 12m turns to something that will allow him to ski powder when it comes (European skier), will still hold an edge on the hardpack, and will plow through crud, nothing too tiff, nothing too flexible.

No park skis (though I was considering the Amplid C7 might be a good choice and something for him to work up too).

I was thinking a Legend, but something a bit more unique would be nice.

Line Prophet 100's are a very versatile ski. They have the waist to ski pow and hold an edge very well on hardpack. I wouldn't consider them to be super stiff, but they are certainly not soft.

but its not really that fat, its like 92 or so under foot?

god. worst ski ever imo.



throw him on something like 85-90 underfoot. going from carvers that is going to feel plenty fat, and hell definitely notice the float in pow. any more and i worry hell get overwhelmed.

All good suggestions. 85-90 is plenty fat enough for him :)

Not sure the EP Pro is going to be that fun for him, unless he gets the new Shorty version ;)

definitely. i skied em hard at a demo last year at Stratton, those things rock. Super stable and reallll light n playful.

if he has a racing background, and isn't all that into freestyle, butters and stuff, i'd recommend him a charging ski...

i myself ride the scottp4; a medium stiff 108mmm waisted ski
has regular camber, early tip rise+taper (no rocker) its very responsive, likes to go fast, goes through anything from deep pow to crud, to ice, basically a great ski if you want to shred the pow like you would shred down an icy groomer, awesome controll and responsiveness...

(however those 12m turns wont work, it has a rather large radius, but as long as you go fast on the groomers you'll be happy with your big radius, seeing how it handles everything great, you litterallly never have to hold back, you can just point those big tips down and enjoy the ride...)

Funny to think back, Seth Pistols were superfat and way too big for anything but Alaska when they first came out. And they were what, 95 underfoot?

Anything in the 85ish to 100 range would work well, whats going to be weirder for him is the more centered mount. Get him something a little less symmetrical and have him mount back from center, he's not going to be busting cork 5's on this pair, and it'll be a better transition.

Line Blends? 100 underfoot, next years have some rocker, this years did not, so he could have a choice of whether or not he wants a rockered ski, personally I'd get this years without the rocker and use it as a non pow day ski, but thy still would float great and be able to handle pretty much anything he throws at them.

I'd recommend looking at Line Prophet 100s, Rossignol S5s, and Armada ARVs. All 3 are 95mm to 100mm under foot and have traditional sidecut and camber, something your friend might like after coming of carving skis. The ARVs and S5s are also sidewall skis which gives the skis more energy in and out of turns.

All good - we have plenty to check out.

A charger is definitely the way - no butters, presses etc or anything of a freestyle nature. He'll want to burn thru the park occasionally but not spend the afternoon there.

Losing 12m turns is not an issue - I love having to really work a fatty to get short turns rather than have the ski do it for me.

Seriously though, at what point can you not stand up in a normal stance without the fat ski equivalent of thigh chaff and having to stand with legs further apart...?

MSPs? do they even still make um? those things are awesome chargin skis. super light too. see if you can find some older ones. you can definitely lay out some turns on those, and theyre not real symmetrical. Prophet 100s would def. be recommended as well
