Political incorrectness aside, what do you guys think about this? It seems like way too many for me, but apparently not the rest of the US.

this, Tsar Bomba was around 50+ Megatons, the Hiroshima and Nagasaki (OGs) were under 20 kilotons each. 1 Megaton is equivalent to 1 million tons of TNT. What's even scarier is that there was speculation that it was possible to cause a fusion reaction of nitrogen nuclei in the atmosphere, which could lead to an uncontrollable chain reaction, an ignition of the atmosphere. A bomb implementing this could theoretically destroy the entire planet, which is why one was probably never made.

I never would have guessed it would have been in the thousands but I guess if you're going to have them might as well have as many as we can... The only thing scary about it is, the more there are the more there are around for people to steal or a few to just "disapear"... Not saying anyone will steal one but anything's possible.

Today's hydrogen bombs are fusion reactions with a nuclear fission warhead attached. A maintained fusion reaction is not currently possible on earth. Sidenote: The radiation comes from fission, not fusion. IF this nitrogen fusion happens during an explosion, the fusion would be localized because there isn't enough magnetic strength or gravity to contain the plasma, aka The heat would dissipate too quickly to maintain fusion. (fusion requires a temp of 100 million k, the temperature in which electrons are stripped from protons and plasma is formed)

That doomsday theory isn't plausable. I bet comic book writers made up that speculation

No i understand how fusion warheads work, but I was reading about the Manhattan project, and one of the scientists was worried that nuclear weapons had the potential to ignite the atmosphere, the question was never directly addressed, but they assumed it was extremely unlikely to occur, though theoretically possible. It does make sense how you say the heat would irradiate quickly, thereby preventing the spread of the initial fusion reaction from the actual warhead material to the surrounding elements in the atmosphere.

it might stem back to the first atomic test, one of the Manhattan project scientists speculated that it might set the atmosphere on fire in some early calculations.

yes but one of the first nukes was fusion, the other was fission, so they were basically just speculating based off what the combination of the two would result in

it's important to note that these mega bombs were developed prior to the ICBM -- and required an airplane bomber to deliver them to their target. The fear that the plane would be shot down before it reached its target meant that the bombs needed to be able to destroy the city even if it didn't reach the city center.

you need the large scale warheads when you only have one payload and no accuracy-- with the newer technology it wasn't about the size of the payload, it was the number of warheads.

With more accurate means of delivering a payload you can shrink the size of the individual warheads while increasing the number of warheads you can deliver simultaneously, giving you a more potent weapon.

Remember during the cold war the point was to take out as many enemy silos as possible (ignore the irony of both sides holding 'defensive fire only' positions) having 1 50 megaton that can destroy 1 silo and a lot of land around it, is much less efficient than being able to destroy 10 silos with precision.
