Ski Film Transitions

I'm working on a short film, and was wondering what are some popular transitions? I've noticed that a lot of them use that transition where it almost looks like it burns to the next shot, with a short flash of orange and color...what's that transition called?

when you do use transitions, just use the simple fade in/out bro.

and i know, i think almost all transitions look tacky, so as of about 2:00 into the film ive only used fades, but i was just wondering if there are any that are commonly used in ski films (such as the film burn)

"Popular Transitions"? Nobody on NS is praying that someone will specifically upload a video with neat transitions. The best transitions are those that appear seamless and smooth to YOUR eye. You are the film maker here, therefore you possess all of the creative means to do whatever you like with your film. Make it your own, not ours.

There are no black and white rules as far as any of this goes. The thing to really remember is you need to say something when you use effects and transitions, like think of what feeling you want to invoke with it, There is a time and place for everything, just make sure you have a reason for it I guess.

whatever, I'm done using this site. this is the absolute worst forum I've ever been a part of. it's all arrogant teenagers who think they know everything about skiing and editing. go out and prove your shit by stomping 10's and putting out real edits. you can look for a short film called ASPECTS in the videos section soon, after posting that i'm leaving this site. its pathetic. we should all be skiers trying to help each other out, but this whole site is filled with negativity, from flaming every edit that's uploaded to shutting down every question asked in the forums. pathetic.

The problem is that for every valid question, there are several retarded ones. Can you take a kid seriously who makes a thread looking for "a 100 camera that takes nice hd clips and looks pro" or "I want to be a photographer, what do I buy?" Then there is the entire element of annoying trends that got annoying really quickly. EVERYONE used to use film burns in their edits at inappropriate times and this really detracted from them. When these repeated questions come up, people don't want to repeat themselves a million times. Look around some more and I'm sure you'll find the gems on this site. Media and Arts is actually pretty good, The Wales regional forum is awesome, and there are always nice cults to join. Anyways, it's the internet, grow a solid shell and you'll be fine.

But really, the only "rule" is that the cut is king. Effectively placed cuts beat any other transition. If the subject placement of the previous frame has a compositional relationship with the subject placement of the next clip, you're on the right track. Of course, this is only for a certain subconscious effect upon your viewer. The best thing you can do is experiment. I can't stress this enough: taking artistic direction from a chat room gets you nowhere. Analyze your favorite videos and the emotional affects of their dynamics, and EXPERIMENT.

And if you insist on using a film burn, zoom into a candle flame, pull it out of focus, and lay it on top of the clip with the opacity turned down. Enjoy your cliche :)

Lmao! "Prove your shit by stomping 10's and putting out real edits"? Have you seen Eheath's edits? Have you seen my edits? I'm pretty sure that those edits are considered real edits. And none of us are arrogant teenagers that think we know everything. Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of us go to college for Film production? Re-evaluate what you're saying here because you obviously created this thread seeking advice from Filmmakers who are more experienced than yourself. And then when you get bashed you say that we all act like we know everything because we do in fact know more than you, hence why you seeked our advice. I'm really excited for your film! You seem pretty confident that it's going to make a statement. I hope you prove us all wrong, i really do. /rant.

Want to know what else is cliche?  60p, HD, High Saturation, High Contrast, Followcam skiing to rap and techno.  Film burns are super played out but I think there are more important things to worry about like being creative.....

If HD is cliche then so are colors, so is sharpness, so is fluidity, etc.

Now followcaming and editing to rap is turning cliche but rap and techno are arguably the best types of song to edit to, anyone will agree.


Being creative is key, you can do all of the things in your list and not be chiche if youre creative.

Not personal.

I will argue that rap and techno BLOW for editing.  Sure they are EASY to edit to but that doesn't make them the right type of music for a video.  Sometimes music that is super hard to edit to can be the best.  Music that evokes emotion is far better than some meaningless rap.

In other words.

VX1k Mk1 for skating = HVX 60p chroma boostin at +7 for skiers.  It's getting annoying.

Do whatever you want though.  That's just my opinion.  Everyone has their own.

Im confused at what you mean when you say 60p, do you just mean slow motion or just 60fps? because 60fps gets converted to 30fps for the internet so you wouldnt be able to tell, so im guessing you mean slow mo?

I wasn't referring to you. Yes, your and Eheath's edits are nice. what really ticks me off about this site is responses like "That's film burn. Don't use it." does that not seem just the tiniest bit annoying and arrogant to you? or how about when I posted a short trailer for my upcoming film to which the first reply was "if the whole movie is going to be like this. please d0nt carry on". yes there are really good skiers and filmer/editors on this site, but it's user base just pisses me off. after having been part of other forums that aren't filled with immaturity and arrogance, this site just isn't tolerable to me. Anyways, here's the short trailer to the film. I just put it together quickly to get a few shots up. The film has a LOT of work to go. But anyways, here you go. Let the flaming commence.

I told you what it was, and I told you the general consensus on it. How about you just stop worrying about us and film some more. I'd get a better impression of your movie if you filmed your own time lapses instead of using stock footage.

Exactly. Honestly, if you're getting upset over people hating on you, then you need to grow up dude. When I first started edting and dropping edits on here I got bashed too. Did I bitch and cry about it? No. Instead ignore what the haters say, because seriously are they physically harming you? No, they're sitting behind their computers saying whatever the fuck they want because they're 13 and think they're cool hating on people. I bet you feel that you worked really hard on your edits, and maybe you did. So instead of getting annoyed and frustrated, tune it out, make edits that YOU like, and don't care about what the haters say. The more time you spend on your filming and editing will eventually get you to someone likes eheath's level. Nobody was born a perfect cinematographer. It's an art. Art and creativity aren't dictated by what other's think. It's dictated by the artist himself. So keep making edits and do it because YOU like doing it. There will always be haters, you just can't dwell on that.
