This oil spill is supposed to be the biggest of all all time... 5000 barrels a day pumping right out of the ground and out of all the wreckage... pretty fucked. This site's pretty on it: http://gcaptain.com/maritime/blog/ Its a buddy's brother's maritime news site. I'm sure more will emerge but... looks like the south's about to get fucked again.

although since this fuckup occurs im sure the media is hyping EVERY incident. just like the media will pretend it cares about mines for 4 weeks, 3 days, 13 hours, 27 minutes, and 14 seconds

See your proving my conspiracy, Obama approved off-shore drilling to help his image with the right. I know he personally doesn't like it cause he's a super liberal. Therefore he secretly had someone break the drill to cause the spill so he could place a temporary ban on all off-shore drilling sites.

Yeah ecosystem destruction sucks. But it is a necessary evil for that sweet....sweet crude. i don't see all of you dumping your suby's to go get a nissan leaf, or GM volt, or just taking public transportation altogether.

Honestly this shouldn't even fuck up gas prices because JUST THREEE SECONDS AGO (not really), but this past week...two weeks, they were talking baout how the biggest profiteers in oil right now are the refineries because supplies have been beefed up to the point where the refinery is becoming an even bigger bottleneck.

this is a stimulus if i ever seen one. 6 million dollars a day for cleanup i read. jigga what? i need to get in the business of oil spill cleanup and containment.


its a shame the oil is hurting wild life. it has made its mark in history, but ehh what...the exxon valdez and a few other minor incidents here and there...not bad i guess.


i would be more ticked about the plastic island in the pacific that is the size of texas.

oh yeah mind you the plastic and the oil are both not directly killing anyone. just environmental hazards at this time, and the chance to enter the food system.

do you fly? then shut the fuck up. for those not in the know, air travel is the least efficient way to get anywhere in terms of carbon foot print.

1mpg per passenger and shit.


since tihs is a skiing website, a ton of people have 4x4 vehicles, and fly to ski destinations in general.

hell one kid can fly for anywhere for $15 i read a few threads ago. it seems if you can put an engine in it and make it go fast, we'll fuckin do it.

i love that one of the ideas to get rid of the oil is to burn it off..~~ and up in alaska there is so much oil that was never cleaned.. im pissed cause i was gonna go down to New Orleans and get a shitton of oysters at acme oyster house. but now.  im gonna have to wait on my favorte bivalve

Tis reality, people made huge money off the Valdez cleanup..."spillionaires". Funny thing is if the whole ordeal costs BP $5 billion for cleanup+reparations+lawsuits, they still made $6 billion just last quarter in earnings- they practically wipe their ass with that kind of money. Not that they're only ones at fault anyway, its a collateral victim of production to keep our cheap energy consumption going and that's not changing anytime soon. No one likes to see this kind of thing happen (especially on our own turf) but we still like to fill up our cars at under $4 a gallon, and not buy oil from the Middle East to boot. Maybe this is a wake-up call but I kind of doubt it.

We will know more in the future about whose fault this is. While everyone holds BP directly responsible, we don't know just who failed at what.

You can sit and say BP failed. But is anything fail proof? You build skis for a living, so you know the answer. Once again, oops one small fuck-up for humanity, but a lifetime of dependence on oil still exists for every human who buys anything so BP is just doing supply and demand in the most efficient way possible for shareholders and consumers.

Shit happens, we deal with it as best we can, AMEN.

It's like i said in the other thread - do you think people drill holes in the seabed for fun?

The BOP failed, that is all on transocean - but it's got so big now, of course the buck will ultimately stop with BP, but bp will hammer transocean over this. It's transoceans fault, but a BP lease block, so they are responsible for the oil and all the costs that go with cleaning up, reimbursing industry etc etc. They'll pay for everything - they're being very transparent, it's a fucking bad situation as well... worse then all of you know; this is pretty much like the Kuwait wells, only 5000ft down, which has NEVER happened before, there has never been an uncontrolled blowout subsea before, not deepwater... so everything being done is an industry first. THe layers of protection involved (LOPA) are more then sufficient, but multiple failures, common cause failures and human error (plus unfortunate things that happened, e.g the pipe rack handling system being blown across the rig into the accommodation taking out the toolpushers office (where another EDS/shut down button is). See those pictures - notice the hole in the heli deck? the ROV shack was driven through it by the force of the explosion apparently....

That is a conspiracy some subscribe to.

Personally its all about the dollar, and gasoline is the cheapest. No one has made an ECONOMICALLY viable alternative available to the masses. You could say the auto industry is working with someone weather it be electric companies now, or gasoline companies, but EPA standards for vehicles are kicking in soon.

Its just like solar panels and wind power. How many people actually put this stuff up on their home? Its financially not worth it unless you have a lot of tax credits and go looong term with this investment.


Here is one article about BP that is a blog, but they seem to have a fair idea of what went wrong.

I think people need to realize that the free market does punish companies, as well as our government. First the stock has lost 13%, and will continue to lose value. Secondly they are paying out the wazoo for cleaning. Lastly they will be fined and sued heavily by probably a couple hundred or maybe even thousand entities claiming damages. Oh how the environmental lawyers are drooling...

its a free market (well, thats debatable) create a product that surpasses the internal combustion engine. im sure theres a plenty large segment in todays world that would gobble up that product. stick it to the man. lolol



the way i look at we have become dependent on oil because its an amazing form of energy (among other things)


PS i rode around in my environmentally friendly electric utility vehicle all day. no lie. the government eats that "going green" shit up like its going out of style. the fact that it doesnt preform is beside the point. lolol

You know why you are only paying 3 bucks at the pumps? BECAUSE oil companies make huge profits.

Do you know how much it is to drill an exploration well?

Do you know how much it costs to bring a well online? Design, build, test, install and huge platform, subsea infrastructure and pipelines??

Where do you think those Huge profits go? Because it's not into some big fat dudes pocket! It all get's reinvested in new production, new technologies (mostly renewables and alternatives - oil companies invest more in renewables research then any government ever would - they're too busy bailing out banks).

So anyway - to take a hit like this money wise is a huge deal.... the knock on effect will be felt at the pumps too, and the more people jump on the hate oil hype train without understanding the true economics of it, the worse it will be.

That's one way to look at it, but you could also say that the oil companies are dependent on consumers...and since oil has been the cheapest form of energy for the past 100 years (along with coal) the consumer chooses to buy oil. We are the ones feeding them. You could go completely oil-free tomorrow by choice, but you would have to make some pretty severe sacrifices to your current lifestyle. Based on that alone I think it will take something more than an oil spill to shift the general population's consumption habit over to a completely different/renewable source of mass energy.

People need to also get away from the Oil for energy thing - that's a small part...

How much oil goes into you're "Electric Car".... how many oil based products?? What's in the fuel tank is a tiny part....

the future of energy, viably is natural gas.... but you are still going to need huge amounts of oil for just about everything else - have a look around the room you are in, the keyboard you are typing on, everything has a crude oil heritage.

That was brought into the discussion because a lot of folks it seems are trying to point fingers at who was responsible for drilling in the Gulf in the first place. But the obvious answer is that we need oil, we rely on it, and there is no perfect means of obtaining it. But yes that is only part of the equation with this leaking ocean well disaster.
