U state university close to mountains?

They have degrees in education and dont cost as much as the U of U, Plus i can just transfer to the U if i want to the following yr... i can get in, but is U state close to any mountains? I know the U of U is roughly 30min away from snowbird/park city (from what ive heard) , is U state a lot different?

logan is real far from the bird/alta/pc/ brighton... you'd be closer to snow basin and powder mountain which are both sick as well... im not sure actual distances though, google that bitch!

The closest mt is Beaver which is about 45min away. Powder and Snowbasin are about 1hr at least then All the Salt Lake and Park City resorts are about an hour away.

Seems a bit far, U of U is a lot more $$ for ppl out-of-state.... but ill apply to both and see what happens..

Yes but in state is dirt cheap, stay in utah a year and you're set.

I am a student at USU and I was born and raised at the mouth of LCC (snowbird/alta).

USU is a great school right at the mouth of Logan canyon. beautiful mountains. small town. super easy to make friends. chill students, chill professors. atmosphere is filled with the granola type of people. a lot fun! also there is a big mormon population if you are ok with that.
-SKIING: 45 min. up the canyon to beaver mtn. super small! like smaller than you think! park is joke. not even good big mountain kind of stuff. if you want to ski while you go to school (and i mean like actually ski good stuff, not groomers) you will have to be skiing BC type of stuff. and go out and build your own kickers and such.
or......

you can do what i do... Drive salt lake city every weekend. (1 hr) and hit up Big cottonwood canyon where you get solitude and brighton or Little cottonwood canyon where you get snowbird and Alta. From SLC you can also go up parley's to get to the canyon's and Park city mtn resort.

or....
instead of driving an hour to slc and half hour to the actual resort, you can drive to ogden( 40min from logan) and go up ogden canyon to snow basin and powder mtn.

U of U is an excellent school as well! it is a commuter school, so it lacks the small college town feel but has the benefits of city living type of feel. U of U is more diverse, less LDS people and more partying. however the only way to really make a lot of friends is to join a fraternity or clubs. The U also is within 30 min of a plethera of ski resorts..- also i might add there is a lot more urban to do in SLC. cops are not as tight as the ones at USU.

Ive been to Bvr Creek and it was alright, but not as good as any of the others. I dont rlly care about partying much and am not going to join a frap, but am goin to join a ski club (duh..)

I am looking at a school that is good academic wise, has greatttt skiing (i mean the best, not no beaver creek shit) , and isnt a LOT of money (25k a year, i believe u can apply for residency after a yr in utah, and i plan on taking all 4 yrs in UT)

I have a half yr b4 I apply, but what I was thinking was I go to UT state for at least a yr, and if i feel like i dont like it (bad atmosphere, dont get to go skiing, etc.) then I can transfer to U of U and have residency at the same time cause ive been in UT for a year.

I have a 3.7 GPA and can get at leastt a 1050 on SAT, prob even better on ACT. I have around 40k in my college acct and am expecting of taking a loan of 10k (of course if i dont have to, get scholarships or grants, that would be better)

I live in NY and hate the fkin skiing here and am seriouslyyy considering going to UT, and need to find colleges to consider going to. Location is a biggyyy, and i mean how far it is to Alta/Bird/Park City.... not local hills. I dont care bout the morman population, as long as they dont hate skiing its all good.

Def. need help and my guidance counselor/college advisor would not help if I go to them asking "Whats the best college in Utah that is close to big mountains and affordable..." so Im relying on NS to help me outt!!

oh very cool. well, what is more important for you, the school/ atmosphere/academic field or the location of being close to skiing.

it sounds like you would fit in wonderfully with utah state people but you would have to drive to get decent skiing (side note: a lot of kids drive down to slc for the weekend to ski or hit up ogden canyon for skiing so hitching a ride would be real easy if you do not have a car) and mostly everyone at utah state is into winter sports.

the U is for sure better location wise. not sure if it has your major though.

oh. also, getting a pass is expensive. but it is a necessary expense-i think you would agree- you can get big discounts for being a college student. like 200 bones off to most if not all of the resorts.

Well I wont have a car, so hitching rides is rlly impt. I am planning on dorming on campus, so meeting ppl to go to alta/Bird will prob be no biggie (i pray) and will buy def buy a pass.

U of U does have my major, but of course I dont know what im def. looking to be (who does in high school) so i need a school with a variety of majors, and im sure both schools will provide me with that.

It pretty much comes down to which school will giv me the most bang for my buck. I am paying around 15-25k the 1st yr, no matter where I go, so I want it to be a school with easy access to mtns on weekdays and weekends (meaning the more skier-atmosphere at the school, the easier hitching rides will be). Ive never hitched rides from ppl cause I can always rely on my dad drivin me to the mtns, and im guessin u jus ask around and know whos going to what mtn, then asking if they have room for 1 more... not rlly a huge concern right now...

Whatever college is "better" academically and ski wise... its tough to decide which one is. Both seem like good colleges, Ut. state is cheaper , which s a hugee + (i believe U of U is somethin like 22k and Ut state is 17? not sure, but if thats true 5+k in my pocket is a great advantage) Which school to consider more than the other???!!

well, it sounds like U of U would be better for you. It fits all of your wants and needs-with the exception of $. Everything you just said you want in a school, the U can offer. (in my opinion, the money situation would be worth it to go to the U. if you stay for a year and gain residency, you will save a ton for the following three years.)

-i just finished my second year at USU and am moving home. a HUGE reason is to be closer to skiing. i want to ski during the week, not just on weekends.

Not true at all. I met everyone i know from the first semester in the dorms and met everyone i know from people in the dorms. Skiing will make you friends.

Sorry, but how the hell do you get from Logan to SLC in an hour? It has always taken me 1:30 to 1:40 depending on traffic. And it's not like I'm driving slow.

yeah my buddy goes to u state and it takes him an hour 30...but then again some girls drive crazy and text and shit while they drive...maybe that's how she does it

from USU campus to downtown SLC takes me exactly 1 hr and 10 min. then another 20-30 to my house (mouth of LCC) thats not at rush hour time. rush hour= solid 2 hours total. and i average about 75-80. if it really bothers you, i am sure there is a math problem that can solve this. averaging 77 mph for about 100 miles? i think.... yadda yadda yadda.

oh an eheath.. you are right. if you live in dorms for sure you'll meet people and if you ski too. most people i know that go to the U don't live in dorms, so thats were i got that from.

either way youll love it out here, waiting to get in state tuition is probably the best idea, because youll probably want to be in slc the next year considering its location near the mountains but like i said either way youll probably have a blast out here

Dude there is great skiing 30 minutes into logan canyon. it take a some hiking if you want to actually ski. otherwise we have rails and shit setup at a place called Tony Grove. Then we have 2 jump spots that are a short hike from the road. Beaver does suck. i worked park a for half the season and they could care less if there was a rail on that mountain. Definitely dont HAVE to go to SLC to go skiing but we all do it anyways.
